Claims
- 1. A method of forming a ceramic matrix composite component, the method comprising the steps of:fabricating a ceramic matrix composite component using a core to form a cavity within the component; partially densifying the component; impregnating the partially-densified component with a coating material; removing the core from the cavity using a chemical leaching compound, wherein the coating material protects the component from the chemical leaching compound; and then further densifying the component.
- 2. A Method as recited in claim 1, wherein the coating material is a wax, the method further comprising the step of removing the coating material from the component by heating the component.
- 3. A method as recited in claim 1, wherein the core is formed from a material selected from the group consisting of silica and alumina.
- 4. A method as recited in claim 1, wherein the chemical leaching compound is selected from the group consisting of salts, hydrogen fluoride, sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide.
- 5. A method as recited in claim 1, wherein the coating material is a polymer resin, the method further comprising the step of removing the coating material from the component by heating the component.
- 6. A method of forming a ceramic matrix composite component, the method comprising the steps of:fabricating a ceramic matrix composite component using a core to form a cavity within the component; partially densifying the component; impregnating the partially-densified component with a coating material to form a solid coating on surfaces of the component; removing the core from the cavity using a chemical leaching compound, wherein the coating material protects the component from the chemical leaching compound; heating the component to remove the coating material from the component; and then further densifying the component.
- 7. A method as recited in claim 6, wherein the coating material is a wax or polymer resin.
- 8. A method as recited in claim 6, wherein the core is formed from a material selected from the group consisting of silica and alumina.
- 9. A method as recited in claim 6, wherein the chemical leaching compound is selected from the group consisting of salts, hydrogen fluoride, sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide.
- 10. A method as recited in claim 6, wherein the fabricating step is a process selected from the group consisting of melt infiltration, chemical vapor infiltration and polymer pyrolysis.
- 11. A method as recited in claim 6, wherein the ceramic matrix composite component is formed of a material selected from the group consisting of SiC/SiC, SiC/Si—SiC, SiC/C and SiC/Si3N4.
