Claims
- 1. A pharmaceutical composition for the treatment of neoplasia, comprising a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier and a compound selected by:
determining the cyclooxygenase (COX) inhibitory activity of the compound; determining the PDE2 inhibition activity of the compound; and selecting the compound that has COX inhibitory activity lower than said PDE activity for treating neoplasia.
- 2. The pharmaceutical composition of claim 1 wherein said compound is further selected by determining whether the compound inhibits tumor cell growth in a neoplastic cell culture; and selecting the compound that wherein inhibition of neoplastic cell growth for treating neoplasia.
- 3. The pharmaceutical composition of claim 2, wherein growth inhibition is ascertained by evaluating whether the compound induces apoptosis.
- 4. A pharmaceutical composition for the treatment of neoplasia, comprising a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier and a compound selected by:
determining the neoplastic cell growth inhibitory activity of the compound; determining the PDE2 inhibition activity of the compound; and selecting the compound that exhibits neoplastic cell growth inhibitory activity and activity inhibitory of said PDE.
- 5. The pharmaceutical composition of claim 4, further comprising determining whether the compound induces apoptosis in neoplastic cells; and
selecting the compound that induce apoptosis.
- 6. The pharmaceutical composition of claim 5, further comprising:
determining whether the COX inhibitory activity of the compound; and selecting the compound with lower COX inhibitory activity relative to the inhibitory activity of the compound against said PDE.
- 7. A pharmaceutical composition for the treatment of neoplasia, comprising a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier and a compound selected by determining the PDE2 inhibition activity of the compound and selecting the compound with such inhibitory activity.
- 8. The pharmaceutical composition of claim 7 wherein the compound is further selected by determining whether the compound induces apoptosis in a neoplastic cell, and selecting the compound with apoptosis-inducing activity.
- 9. A method of selecting a compound for treatment of a neoplasia, comprising:
(a) evaluating the anti-neoplastic activity of the compound against said neoplasia; (b) evaluating whether the compound inhibits PDE2 activity; and (c) selecting the compound that exhibits anti-neoplastic activity and that inhibits PDE2 activity.
- 10. A method for identifying a compound for treating neoplasia, comprising:
selecting a compound that inhibits PDE2; and evaluating the neoplasia growth inhibiting activity of the compound identifying a compound that inhibits PDE2 activity and has neoplasia growth inhibiting activity as a compound to treat neoplasia.
- 11. A method for identifying a compound for treating neoplasia, comprising
determining the cyclooxygenase (COX) inhibitory activity of the compound; and determining whether the compound inhibits PDE2; wherein low COX inhibitory activity and inhibition of PDE2 identifies that the compound can treat neoplasia.
- 12. A method of selecting a compound for treating neoplastic cells, comprising
determining the neoplastic cell growth inhibitory activity of the compound; determining whether the compound inhibits PDE2; and selecting the compound that inhibits neoplastic cell growth and inhibits PDE2.
- 13. A method for identifying a compound with potential for treating neoplasia, comprising:
selecting a compound that inhibits PDE2; evaluating neoplastic cell growth inhibiting activity of the compound; and identifying the compound that inhibits PDE2 and neoplastic cell growth wherein said compound has the potential to inhibit neoplasia without substantially inhibiting the growth of normal cells.
