Claims
- 1. An active matrix liquid crystal display comprising:an array of transistor circuits formed with a semiconductor layer on an insulating layer; a plurality of first and second contacts for each transistor; an array of pixel electrodes over regions on a first side of the insulating layer from which the semiconductor layer has been removed, each pixel electrode extending over the first contact of a transistor in each transistor circuit; a light shield over the array of transistor circuits with the transistor circuits interposed between the light shield and the first side of the insulating layer; and a liquid crystal material positioned on a second side of the insulating layer between the array of pixel electrodes and a counterelectrode.
- 2. The active matrix liquid crystal display of claim 1 wherein the semiconductor layer comprises single crystal silicon and the insulating layer comprises a thin film of silicon dioxide.
- 3. The active matrix liquid crystal display of claim 2 further comprising an adhesive that bonds the array of pixel electrodes and transistor circuits to an optically transmissive substrate.
- 4. The active matrix liquid crystal display of claim 1 further comprising a color filter array over the pixel electrodes.
- 5. The active matrix liquid crystal display of claim 4 wherein the color filter array comprises a polyimide film over each pixel electrode.
- 6. The active matrix liquid crystal display of claim 1 wherein each pixel electrode comprises a metal oxide or a metal nitride.
- 7. The active matrix liquid crystal display of claim 1 wherein each pixel electrode comprises regions of indium tin oxide.
- 8. The display of claim 1 wherein the pixel electrodes comprise a silicon material.
- 9. The display of claim 1 wherein the pixel electrodes comprise a polysilicon material.
- 10. The active matrix liquid crystal display of claim 1 further comprising a transparent adhesive and an optically transparent substrate with the light shield interposed between the transistor circuits and the transparent adhesive.
