Claims
- 1. A color toner composition comprising dyed toner resin particles having a volume average diameter in the range of from about 2 microns to about 10 microns, with a size distribution span value less than 1.0 and characterized by a micro-serrated surface texture exhibiting a surface roughness index value larger than about 1.2.
- 2. The color toner composition according to claim 1, wherein said dyed toner resin particles have a micro-serrated surface exhibiting a surface roughness index of greater than about 1.5.
- 3. The color toner composition according to claim 2, wherein said dyed toner resin particles have a micro-serrated surface exhibiting a surface roughness index of greater than about 2.
- 4. The color toner composition according to claim 1, wherein said toner resin particles comprise a polymer selected from the group consisting of polyester resins and styrene copolymer resins.
- 5. The color toner composition according to claim 1 wherein said resin particles include functional sites suitable for interacting with a functionalized dye selected from the group consisting of: hydroxy moieties; alkoxy moieties; sulfonic or derivatized sulfonic moieties; sulfonic or derivatized sulfonic moieties; carboxyl or derivatized carboxyl moieties; phosphonic or derivatized phosphonic moieties; phosphinic or derivatized phosphinic moieties; thiol moieties; amine moieties; alkaline moieties; quaternized moieties; and mixtures thereof.
- 6. The color toner composition according to claim 1, wherein said toner comprises resin particles are substantially spherical with a volume average particle size of from about 3 to about 8 microns.
- 7. The color toner composition according to claim 1, wherein said toner resin particles have a narrow size distribution with a span value less than about 0.8.
- 8. The color toner composition according to claim 1 wherein said toner resin particles include a charge control agent selected from the group consisting of: quaternary ammonium compounds inclusive of alkyl pyridinium halides and alkyl pyridinium compounds; organic sulfate and sulfonate compositions; bisulfonates; ammonium sulfates (DDAES); distearyl dimethyl ammonium bisulfate (DDAMS); cetyl pyridinium tetrafluoroborates; distearyl dimethyl ammonium methyl sulfate, aluminum salts; quaternary ammonium nitrobenzene sulfonates; and mixtures thereof.
- 9. A developer composition incorporating the color toner composition according to claim 1 and further comprising carrier particles, wherein said carrier particles are selected from the group consisting of ferrite particles, steel particles and iron particles having a surface active agent coated thereon.
- 10. A process of preparing a particulate color toner composition for developing latent electrostatic images comprising:
a) dispersing a particulate polymer resin provided with functional sites suitable for interacting with a functionalized dye in an organic medium, said organic medium comprising an organic dispersion medium, a surfactant, and a dye-mediating co-solvent at least partially miscible with said polymer, said particulate polymer resin being substantially insoluble in said organic medium; b) providing said functionalized dye to said organic medium, said functionalized dye having functional sites adapted for interacting with the functional sites on said particulate polymer resin and said dye being miscible with said dye-mediating co-solvent; c) maintaining the organic medium containing said particulate polymer resin and said dye at an elevated temperature for a time sufficient to dye said resin; and d) separating said organic medium and said particulate polymer resin; whereby said functionalized dye is applied to said resin particles and the particle size and the size distribution of said particulate polymer resin are substantially unchanged by the aforesaid process.
- 11. The process according to claim 10, wherein said particulate polymer resin is selected from polyester resins and styrene copolymer resins.
- 12. The process according to claim 10, wherein said functionalized dye is selected from basic dyes, acidic dyes and reactive dyes.
- 13. The process according to claim 10, wherein the weight ratio of functionalized dye to particulate polymer resin is from about 1:100 to about 10:100.
- 14. The process according to claim 10, wherein the solubility parameter value of said organic dispersion medium is smaller than the solubility parameter value of the particulate polymer resin by at least about 1.
- 15. The process according to claim 10, wherein the solubility parameter value of said organic dispersion medium is smaller than the solubility parameter value of the particulate polymer resin by at least about 2.
- 16. The process according to claim 15, wherein said organic dispersion medium is selected from paraffinic solvents and polyethylene oxides.
- 17. The process according to claim 10, wherein said surfactant is a non-ionic surfactant.
- 18. The process according to claim 17, wherein said non-ionic surfactant is selected from polymers containing ethylene oxide moieties, polymers containing propylene oxide moieties, polymers containing a combination of ethylene oxide and propylene oxide moieties, copolymers of vinylpyrrolidinone and copolymers of alkylated maleic acid and mixtures thereof.
- 19. The process according to claim 17, wherein said surfactant is present in an amount of from about 5 to about 200 percent by weight of the amount of organic dispersion medium present.
- 20. The process according to claim 19, wherein said surfactant is present in an amount of from about 10 to about 50 percent by weight of the amount of organic dispersion medium present.
- 21. The process according to claim 20, wherein said surfactant is present in an amount of from about 20 to about 40 percent by weight of the amount of said dispersion medium present.
- 22. The process according to claim 10, wherein said dye-mediating co-solvent is an organic solvent which has a boiling temperature less than about 100° C. and dissolves a functionalized dye by more than the concentration of 10 grams per liter.
- 23. The process according to claim 22, wherein said dye-mediating co-solvent is selected from ethyl alcohol, propyl alcohol, acetone, tetrahydrofuran, methyl ethyl ketone and butanone and mixtures thereof.
- 24. The process according to claim 22, wherein said dye-mediating co-solvent is present in an amount of from about 1 to about 30 percent by weight of the amount of organic solvent present.
- 25. The process according to claim 24 wherein said dye-mediating co-solvent is present in an amount of from about 5 to about 20 percent by weight of the amount of organic solvent present.
- 26. The method according to claim 10, wherein said particulate polymer resin is from about 10 to about 70 volume percent of the combined volume of said resin and organic medium.
- 27. The method according to claim 26, wherein said particulate polymer resin is from about 20 to about 50 volume percent of the combined volume of said resin and organic medium.
- 28. The method according to claim 10, wherein said elevated temperature is in the range from about 30° C. to about 120° C.
- 29. The process according to claim 10, wherein the organic medium containing said particulate polymer resin and said dye is maintained at said elevated temperature for at least about 5 minutes.
- 30. The process according to claim 29, wherein the organic medium containing said particulate polymer resin and said dye is maintained at said elevated temperature for between about 5 and 60 minutes.
- 31. The process according to claim 10, wherein the resulting particulate toner composition have a volume average diameter within 1.0 micron of the volume average diameter of said particulate polymer resin.
- 32. The process according to claim 10, wherein toner particles produced have a micro-serrated texture with a surface roughness index not smaller than 90% of the surface roughness index value of said polymer resin particles prior to dyeing.
- 33. The process according to claim 10, further comprising dispersing a charge control agent in said organic medium.
- 34. A dispersion dyed color toner composition for developing latent electrostatic image which particles have the volume average particle size diameter in the range of from about 2 microns to about 10 microns and have a size distribution with the span value less than 1.0, prepared by way of a process comprising:
a) dispersing a particulate resin provided with functional sites suitable for interacting with a functionalized dye in an organic medium, said polymer being substantially insoluble in said organic medium, said organic medium comprising an organic dispersion medium, a surfactant and a dye-mediating co-solvent at least partially miscible with said polymer; b) providing said functionalized dye to said organic medium, said functionalized dye having functional sites adapted for interacting with the functional sites on said particulate polymer resin; c) maintaining the organic medium containing said particulate polymer resin and said dye at an elevated temperature for a time sufficient to dye said resin; and d) separating said organic medium and said particulate polymer resin; whereby said functionalized dye is applied to said resin particles and the particle size and the size distribution of said particulate polymer resin are substantially unchanged by the aforesaid process.
- 35. The dispersion dyed color toner according to claim 34, further comprising a charge control agent.
- 36. The dispersion dyed color toner according to claim 34, further comprising a flow improvement agent.
- 37. A developer incorporating the dispersion dyed color toner composition according to claim 34 and carrier particles, wherein said particles are selected from the group consisting of ferrite particle, steel particle and iron powder having a surface active agent coated thereon.
