Claims
- 1. A microfiche recorder comprising .[.a flat plate having an aperture,.]. a platen including a flat film mounting surface .[.parallel to the plate.]., the platen being .[.slidably.]. movable .Iadd.in X and Y directions .Iaddend..[.over a sufficient portion of the plate to position substantially any area of the surface over the aperture,.]. a film supply reel mounted to the platen for feeding film onto the surface and moving the film supply with the platen, means for moving the platen in X and in Y directions .[.over the plate.]., optical means .[.disposed on a side of the plate opposite the platen.]. for forming an image adjacent the surface and focused in a plane of the film when film is placed against the surface, vacuum forming means for firmly biasing film against the platen surface to maintain the film flat in the focal plane, whereby images can be sequentially recorded on the film after intermittent X-Y movements of the platen, and means for removing exposed film from the surface.
- 2. A recorder according to claim 1 .[.wherein the plate is.]. .Iadd.including a .Iaddend.substantially horizontal .[.and.]. .Iadd.plate, wherein .Iaddend.the platen overlies the plate .Iadd.and is slidably movable thereover.Iaddend., wherein the film support surface faces downwardly towards the plate, and wherein the vacuum forming means includes a plurality of port holes distributed over the surface and means for connecting the port holes to a vacuum and assuring a firm contact between the film and the surface.
- 3. A recorder according to claim 1 including cutting means for severing exposed film from a remainder of the film after the exposed film has been removed from the surface.
- 4. A recorder according to claim 1 wherein the film removing means comprises clamp means for grasping a free end of the film supply, and means for moving the grasping means in one of the X or the Y directions a predetermined distance to thereby pull a fixed length of film including the exposed film past the surface for subsequent processing of the exposed film and for exposure of a fresh film length .[.with.]. .Iadd.to .Iaddend.the optical means.
- 5. A microfilm recording system comprising .[.a horizontally disposed flat reference plate including an optical aperture,.]. a film holding platen .[.including means slidably engaging the plate and spacing a flat film mounting surface of the platen from and parallel to the plate.]., means for securely biasing a length of film flat against .[.mounting surface of.]. the platen, a film supply storage reel mounted to the platen for feeding film to .[.the.]. .Iadd.a .Iaddend.film retaining side of the platen, means for moving the platen in perpendicular X and Y directions .Iadd.in a plane parallel to the film retaining side, optical .Iaddend.means for projecting an image .[.through the aperture.]. onto the film and for focussing the image in a focal plane of the film retained to the .[.surface.]. .Iadd.side.Iaddend., and means for intermittently advancing exposed film sections away from the platen to thereby simultaneously advance a fresh, unexposed film section to the side .[., and means for thereafter severing the exposed section.]..
- 6. An optical recording system for recording projected images on a film comprising: .Iadd.a film supply spool.Iaddend., a platen assembly having a flat .[.underside.]. .Iadd.side .Iaddend.and .[.a plurality of vacuum portholes on the underside.]. .Iadd.means .Iaddend.for biasing a film .Iadd.section connected to the supply spool .Iaddend.thereagainst and maintaining .[.it.]. .Iadd.at least a portion of the film section onto which an image is projected .Iaddend.flat to assure high resolution recording, .[.at least one support member projecting from the side of the assembly and terminating in a flat support surface that is parallel to the underside, a flat reference plate permitting uninhibited slidable motions of the member.]. means .[.permitting movement of.]. .Iadd.for moving the platen parallel to the film section .Iaddend.so that substantially every portion of the film .Iadd.section .Iaddend.retained to the .[.surface.]. .Iadd.side .Iaddend.can be exposed to an image focused .[.above the plate.]. .Iadd.on the film section .Iaddend..[.from a side of the plate opposite the assembly.]., .Iadd.means for severing the film section from the supply spool after the section has been exposed.Iaddend., means for intermittently withdrawing exposed film sections from the .Iadd.side .Iaddend..[.underside.]. .Iadd.and for advancing a new, unexposed section to the side.Iaddend., and means for automatically passing exposed sections through a film processor for developing the film section for substantially immediate use after recordation on the section while a fresh section on the .Iadd.side .Iaddend..[.underside.]. is being exposed to the images.
- 7. A system for the recordation of microfiche images on film sections of a predetermined size comprising .[.a relatively large, flat reference plate including at least one optical aperture,.]. light display means .[.beneath the plate.]. and lens means for forming an image of the display means .[.above the plate.]., a .[.relatively small.]. platen .[.disposed above the plate and.]. having a flat .[.underside.]. .Iadd.side .Iaddend..[.parallel to the plate.]. for positioning a film section in the focal plane of the lens means, .[.the platen having downwardly extending members freely slidable over the plate.]., means coupled to the platen for moving it in perpendicular X-Y directions, the moving means including means limiting the .[.slidable.]. movement of the platen .[.on the plate.]. so that the image projected by the lens means always falls on a portion of the film section, a .[.continuous.]. length .Iadd.of .Iaddend.film mounted to the platen for feeding film to .[.beneath.]. the platen, means for retaining a film section advanced from the film supply immovably and flat to the .[.underside.]. .Iadd.side .Iaddend.of the platen, the moving means further including means for positioning the platen in a home or starting position, a linearly movable carriage adjacent the platen having clamp means for grasping a free end of the film section, means for moving the carriage and the grasped section away from the platen to thereby automatically advance a fresh film section to .[.beneath.]. the platen, means to thereafter sever the exposed film section from the fresh section, a film processor for developing the section, and means for transporting the severed exposed section to the processor.
- 8. A system according to claim 7 wherein the severing means sever the exposed section at a point spaced from the platen to provide a free film end which protrudes from the platen. .[.9. A system according to claim 7 including means for substantially evenly biasing all parts of the section against the underside of the platen..]. .[.10. A microfiche recorder comprising optical means for forming an image at a focal point; a platen including a flat mounting and support surface for a film section, the surface having a sufficient size to receive the full film section and being located so as to position the section in a plane of the focal point; means for movement of the platen over sufficient distances in the X and Y directions to align substantially any area of the film section with the focal point; a film supply connected with the platen for movement therewith in the X and Y directions; means for advancing a new film section from the supply after the exposure of a previous film section; and means for firmly biasing the film section against the platen surface to immovably retain the film flat in the focal plane for the sequential recordation of images on the film after incremental X-Y movements of the platen. .Iaddend..Iadd. 13. A microfiche recorder comprising optical means for forming an image at a focal point; a platen including means defining a flat mounting surface for positioning a section of film in a plane of the focal point; means permitting sufficient movement of the platen parallel to the focal plane to align substantially any area of the film section with the focal point; means for moving the platen in X and Y directions; film supply means connected with the platen for feeding film onto the surface defining means; and means for firmly biasing at least the film area aligned with the focal point against the surface defining means. .Iaddend. .Iadd. 14. A microfiche recorder according to claim 13 wherein an end of the film is disposed on the side of the platen opposite the film supply means, and including means for longitudinally drawing the free end to advance a fresh length of film onto the surface, and means for severing the film section from the fresh film length. .Iaddend..Iadd. 15. A microfiche recorder according to claim 14 including means for developing the severed film section substantially immediately after its severance from the fresh film length. .Iaddend. .Iadd. 16. An optical recording system for recording projected images on a film comprising: a platen assembly having a flat side and means for maintaining a film section flat on the side to assure high resolution recording, means for projecting small images onto the film section, means permitting movement of the assembly parallel to the film so that substantially every portion of the film section can be exposed to an image focused on the film, means for moving the assembly in X and Y directions, means for intermittently withdrawing exposed film sections from the side to thereby simultaneously advance a fresh, unexposed film section to the side, and means for severing the exposed section before the fresh section has been fully exposed. .Iaddend..Iadd. 17. A recording system according to claim 16 wherein the means for maintaining the film section flat comprises a plurality of vacuum portholes on the side of the platen assembly. .Iaddend. .Iadd. 18. An optical recording system for recording images on a film comprising: a platen assembly having a flat side and means for maintaining a film section flat on the side to assure high resolution recording, means for projecting the images onto the film section, means permitting movement of the assembly parallel to the film so that substantially every portion of the film section can be exposed to an image focused on the film, means for moving the assembly in X and Y directions, means for withdrawing the exposed film sections from the side to thereby advance a new film section onto the side, and means for severing the exposed section from a remainder of the film at a point spaced from the platen to form a free film end attached to the new film section which protrudes from the platen. .Iaddend..Iadd. 19. A recording system according to claim 18 wherein the means for withdrawing exposed film sections comprises means for grasping the free film end, and means for thereafter advancing the grasped end away from the side to thereby withdraw the section and simultaneously advance a fresh, unexposed film

An optical recording system for recording projected images on a film comprising: an assembly for holding a film section during X-Y movements of the platen, means for projecting small images into a focal plane, means for maintaining an area of the film in the focal plane to record a projected image thereon, means permitting movement of the assembly parallel to the film section so that substantially every portion of the film section can be exposed to an image focused on the film while the film is secured to the assembly, means for moving the assembly in X and Y directions, means for intermittently withdrawing exposed film sections from the side to thereby simultaneously advance a fresh, unexposed film section to the side, and means for severing the exposed section before the fresh section has been fully exposed. .Iaddend..Iadd. 21. A recording system according to claim 20 wherein the assembly includes a platen having a flat side, and wherein the means for maintaining the film area in the focal plane comprises means for biasing the entire film section against the side of the assembly. .Iaddend.
