- 5. The prosthetic device of claim 3 wherein the projection member comprises a projection portion and a flange portion, the flange portion diverging from the projection portion to the distal end of the flange portion, thereby defining an engagement surface of the flange portion.
- 6. The prosthetic device of claim 5 wherein the engagement surface is adapted to engage the planar recess surface and wherein the engagement surface is smaller than the planar recess surface to permit translational motion of the projection member relative to the second component.
- 7. The prosthetic device of claim 6 wherein the projection portion is convex and is adapted to engage the concave recess surface to permit rotational and pivotal motion between the first and second components.
- 8. The prosthetic device of claim 2 wherein the first component comprises a first bearing surface in an opposed relation to the first articulating surface, and a first flange extending from the first bearing surface, the first flange being adapted to engage a first vertebra.
- 9. The prosthetic device of claim 8 wherein the second component comprises a second bearing surface in an opposed relation to the second articulating surface, and a second flange extending from the second bearing surface, the second flange being adapted to engage a second vertebra.
- 10. The prosthetic device of claim 8 wherein the first flange is adapted to be positioned within a preformed opening in the first vertebra.
- 11. The prosthetic device of claim 9 wherein the second flange is adapted to be positioned within a preformed opening in the second vertebra.
- 12. The prosthetic device of claim 8 wherein the first flange is coated with a bone-growth promoting substance and includes at least one opening therethrough.
- 13. The prosthetic device of claim 9 wherein the second flange is coated with a bone-growth promoting substance and includes at least one opening therethrough.
- 14. The prosthetic device of claim 8 wherein the first component includes a pair of notches formed therein, the notches being formed in the first component in a direction substantially parallel with the first flange.
- 15. The prosthetic device of claim 9 wherein the second component includes a pair of notches formed therein, the notches being formed in the second component in a direction substantially parallel with the second flange.
- 16. A modular prosthetic device for insertion into an intervertebral space, comprising a first component having a first recess formed therein, the first recess defining a first recess surface, a second component having a diverging second recess formed therein, the second recess defining a second recess surface, and a projection member having a diverging flange portion for engaging the second recess surface and a convex portion for engaging the first recess surface, whereby engagement of the projection member with the first component and the second component permits at least rotational and translational motion between the first and second components.
- 17. A modular prosthetic member for forming a portion of a prosthetic device, comprising a first modular portion having a diverging recess formed therein and a second modular portion having a flange portion for engaging the recess whereby the modular prosthetic member is adapted to engage another prosthetic member via the second modular portion.
- 18. The modular prosthetic member of claim 17 wherein the recess is formed in a first surface of the first modular portion.
- 19. The modular prosthetic member of claim 18 wherein the recess includes a recess surface in a spaced relation from the first surface of the first modular portion.
- 20. The modular prosthetic member of claim 19 wherein the recess diverges from the first surface to the recess surface.
- 21. The modular prosthetic member of claim 19 wherein the second modular portion further comprises a projection portion and the flange portion diverges from the projection portion to the distal end of the flange portion, thereby defining an engagement surface of the flange portion.
- 22. The modular prosthetic member of claim 21 wherein the engagement surface is adapted to engage the recess surface and wherein the engagement surface is smaller than the recess surface to permit translational motion of the second modular portion relative to the first modular portion.
- 23. The modular prosthetic member of claim 22 wherein the engagement surface is circular and the recess surface is circular.
- 24. A method for restoring articulating motion between a pair of vertebral bodies, comprising:
providing a prosthetic device comprising a first component having a first recess formed therein, a second component having a second diverging recess formed therein, and a projection member adapted to engage each of the first and second component to permit articulating motion therebetween; and inserting the prosthetic device into an intervertebral space defined between a first vertebral body and a second vertebral body.
- 25. The method of claim 24 further comprising providing each of the first and second components with a flange, the first flange being adapted to penetrate the first vertebral body and the second flange being adapted to penetrate the second vertebral body.
- 26. The method of claim 24 further comprising forming an opening in each of the first and second vertebral bodies.
- 27. The method of claim 26 further comprising providing each of the first and second components with a flange, the first flange being adapted to engage the first opening and the second flange being adapted to engage the second opening.
