Claims
- 1. An electrical connector comprising an insulative body, and a substantially linear array of receptacle contact terminals with a mounting end mounted on the body and a mating end adapted to receive a mating contact along an insertion direction, at least one of said terminals being offset at said mounting end and at said mating end, along said insertion direction, from the other of the contacts whereby said at least one offset terminal receives the mating contact prior to the other terminals receiving the mating contacts.
- 2. The electrical connector as recited in claim 1, wherein said terminals are substantially identical.
- 3. The electrical connector as recited in claim 1, in combination with a header having a plurality of pins mateable with said terminals, all of said pins having a generally similar length.
- 4. The electrical connector as recited in claim 1, in combination with a header having:
- a body; and
- a plurality of pins mateable with said terminals, all of said pins extending from said body a generally similar distance.
- 5. The electrical connector as recited in claim 1, wherein the connector is part of a cable assembly.
- 6. An electrical connector adapted to engage a mating connector along an insertion axis and having an arrangement of contact terminals, each having generally similar lengths, a mounting end and a mating end, at least one of said terminals being offset from the other of said terminals along said insertion axis at said mounting end and at said mating end.
- 7. The electrical connector as recited in claim 6, wherein said terminals are identical.
- 8. The electrical connector as recited in claim 6, in combination with a header having a plurality of pins mateable with said terminals, all of said pins having a generally similar length.
- 9. The electrical connector as recited in claim 6, in combination with a header having:
- a body; and
- a plurality of pins mateable with said terminals, all of said pins extending from said body a generally similar distance.
- 10. The electrical connector as recited in claim 6, wherein the connector is part of a cable assembly.
- 11. An electrical connector, comprising:
- a housing; and
- a plurality of modules retained by the housing, each module having an arrangement of contact terminals along an edge thereof, each terminal having a mounting end and a mating end, said mating end and said mounting end of at least one of said terminals located away from said edge a distance greater than said mounting end and said mating end of the other of said terminals.
- 12. The electrical connector as recited in claim 11, wherein said terminals are identical.
- 13. The electrical connector as recited in claim 11, in combination with a header having a plurality of pins mateable with said terminals, all of said pins having a generally similar length.
- 14. The electrical connector as recited in claim 11, in combination with a header having:
- a body; and
- a plurality of pins mateable with said terminals, all of said pins extend ing from said body a generally similar distance.
- 15. The electrical connector as recited in claim 11, wherein the connector is part of a cable assembly.
- 16. An electrical connector, comprising:
- a housing having a first edge positionable adjacent a substrate and a second edge positionable adjacent a mating connector;
- a plurality of surface mount terminals located along said first edge for engaging the substrate; and
- a plurality of terminals for engaging contacts of the mating connector, said terminals located along said second edge and having a mounting end, a mating end, and a mating axis parallel to the substrate;
- wherein at least one of said terminals is offset from the other of said terminals along said mating axis at said mounting end and said mating end.
- 17. The connector as recited in claim 16, wherein said first edge is adjacent said second edge.
- 18. The connector as recited in claim 16, wherein said surface mount terminal includes a solder mass at a distal tip of said terminal.
- 19. The connector as recited in claim 18, wherein said solder mass is a solder ball.
- 20. The connector as recited in claim 16, further comprising a circuit substrate supported by said housing, said surface mount terminals and said terminals surface mounted to said circuit substrate.
- 21. The electrical connector as recited in claim 1, further comprising a circuit substrate having traces corresponding to said terminals, said trace corresponding to said offset terminal being offset, along said insertion direction, from the other of said traces.
- 22. The electrical connector as recited in claim 6, further comprising a circuit substrate having traces corresponding to said terminals, said trace corresponding to said offset terminal being offset, along said insertion axis, from the other of said traces.
- 23. The electrical connector as recited in claim 11, wherein each module further comprises a circuit substrate having traces corresponding to said terminals, said trace corresponding to said offset terminal being located away from said edge a distance greater than the other of said traces.
- 24. The electrical connector as recited in claim 16, further comprising a circuit substrate having traces corresponding to said terminals, said trace corresponding to said offset terminal being offset, along said mating axis, from the other of said traces.
