Claims
- 1. A peripheral access module for transporting at least voice and data between the common control equipment and peripheral equipment of a telephone switch, said peripheral access module comprising:means for determining a protocol to be used for transporting the voice and data between the common control equipment and the peripheral equipment; means for determining a type of medium to be used to effect the transporting; means for operatively connecting said peripheral access module to the peripheral equipment; and, means for permitting said peripheral access module to adaptively reside on a card of the common control equipment.
- 2. The peripheral access module of claim 1 wherein the protocol to be used may be one of ATM, IP, XDSL.
- 3. The peripheral access module of claim 2 wherein a different protocol may be associated with each one of a plurality of ports of the peripheral equipment.
- 4. The peripheral access module of claim 2 wherein the type of medium may be one of fiber optic or copper links.
- 5. A method for transporting voice and data between common control equipment and peripheral equipment of a telephone switch using a peripheral access module adapted to reside on a card of the common control equipment and operatively connected to the peripheral equipment, said method comprising:providing said peripheral access module; determining the protocols to be used in effecting the transport of voice and data between the common control equipment and the peripheral equipment; determining the medium to be used in effecting the transport of voice and data between the common control equipment and the peripheral equipment; configuring the peripheral access module to support the determined protocols and the determined medium; inserting the peripheral access module into a connector of the common control equipment; and, connecting the peripheral access module to the peripheral equipment.
- 6. The method of claim 5 wherein the step of determining the medium comprises selecting the medium from one of copper or fiber optic links.
- 7. The method of claim 5 wherein the step of determining the protocols comprises associating a particular protocol with a subset of a plurality of ports of the peripheral equipment.
- 8. The method of claim 7 wherein the step of determining the protocols further comprises selecting the protocol to be supported from one of ATM, IP, XDSL.
