- 12. An alternate line option module situated between a customer two wire telephone connection and a wireline public switched telephone network (PSTN) comprising:
- switching means coupled between said customer two wire telephone connection and said wireline PSTN, for selectively interrupting said two wire connection to disconnect said customer connection from said wireline PSTN;
- control means, coupled to said switching means, for providing call allocation messages to said switching means to selectively allocate communication services between said PSTN and a wireless telecommunications network, said control means including an intelligent processor that responds to control messages from a wireless carrier over a wireless communication link, said control messages being received prior to said call communications; and
- means, responsive to said switching means, for activating a wireless network transceiver in said module to provide said call communication services using said wireless network.
- 13. An alternate line option module as claimed in claim 12 wherein:
- said control messages include a selection process to use in determining one of said wireline PSTN and said wireless network for providing said call communications services; and
- said intelligent processor is programmed with said selection process.
- 14. An alternate line option module as claimed in claim 13 wherein said intelligent processor is periodically reprogrammed with an updated selection process.
- 15. An alternate line option module as claimed in claim 12 wherein said control means is configured to contact said wireless carrier over said wireless communication link to obtain download information, said download information including said control messages.
- 16. An alternate line option module as claimed in claim 15 wherein said wireless carrier is a first wireless carrier, and said control means is configured to contact a second wireless carrier to obtain said download information in response to an unavailability of service with said first wireless carrier.
- 17. An alternate line option module as claimed in claim 16 wherein said wireless communication network is a first wireless network and said switching means selectively provides said call communication services over a second wireless network managed by said second wireless carrier in response to said download information obtained from said second wireless carrier.
- 18. An alternate line option module as claimed in claim 15 wherein said download information includes a module identifier, and said intelligent processor is programmed with said module identifier.
- 19. An alternate line option module as claimed in claim 15 wherein said download information includes a date/time stamp, and said control means further comprises a real time clock, said clock being initialized with said date/time stamp.
- 20. An alternate line option module as claimed in claim 19 wherein said control messages include identification of service windows during which said call communication services may be provided using said wireless network, and said control means is configured to monitor when said service windows occur in response to said initialized clock.
- 21. An alternate line option module situated between a customer two wire telephone connection and a public switched telephone network (PSTN) comprising:
