Claims
- 1. An implantable tissue approximation device comprising:
a) a supportive backing which defines at least one serrated boundary thereon; b) a plurality of attachment points extending from the backing, wherein the attachment points are adapted to distribute a load over the backing; and c) an anchoring region integral with the backing.
- 2. The tissue approximation device of claim 1 wherein the supportive backing is adapted to separate along the serrated boundary.
- 3. The tissue approximation device of claim 1 wherein the supportive backing further defines a plurality of serrated boundaries thereon.
- 4. The tissue approximation device of claim 3 wherein at least one of the plurality of serrated boundaries is defined diagonally relative to the remaining boundaries.
- 5. The tissue approximation device of claim 1 wherein the backing comprises a triangular shape.
- 6. The tissue approximation device of claim 1 wherein the device comprises a material selected from the group consisting of biodegradable and biological materials.
- 7. The tissue approximation device of claim 6 wherein the biodegradable material comprises a polymer or copolymer.
- 8. The tissue approximation device of claim 7 wherein the polymer or copolymer comprises one or more materials selected from the group consisting of polyglycolide, polylactide, poly-α-caprolactone, polydiaxanone, polyglyconate, polylactide-co-glycolide, their mixtures, alloys, and random and block copolymers.
- 9. The tissue approximation device of claim 6 wherein the biological material comprises one or more materials selected from the group consisting of collagen, hydroxyapatite from natural sources, hydroxyapatite from synthetic sources, bone graft, and any polymerized versions thereof.
- 10. The tissue approximation device of claim 1 wherein the backing is configured to be flexible.
- 11. The tissue approximation device of claim 1 wherein the backing is configured to conform to a bone surface.
- 12. The tissue approximation device of claim 11 wherein the backing is configured to conform upon application of energy to the backing.
- 13. The tissue approximation device of claim 1 wherein the anchoring region comprises a post.
- 14. The tissue approximation device of claim 13 wherein the post extends angularly from the backing.
- 15. The tissue approximation device of claim 13 wherein the post has a cross-sectional shape selected from the group consisting of circles, ovals, triangles, diamonds, and polygons.
- 16. An implantable tissue approximation device comprising:
a) a supportive backing; b) a plurality of attachment points extending from the backing, wherein the attachment points: are adapted to distribute a load over the backing; c) an anchoring region integral with the backing; and d) a coating at least partially covering the implantable device.
- 17. The tissue approximation device of claim 16 wherein the coating selectively covers at least a single surface of the supportive backing.
- 18. The tissue approximation device of claim 16 wherein the coating selectively covers at least one of the biodegradable attachment points.
- 19. The tissue approximation device of claim 16 wherein the coating comprises an adhesive material adapted to increase adhesion between the implantable device and the tissue surface.
- 20. The tissue approximation device of claim 16 wherein the coating comprises a material adapted to encourage bone growth.
- 21. The tissue approximation device of claim 16 wherein the coating comprises a lubricious material.
- 22. The tissue approximation device of claim 16 wherein the coating comprises a material adapted to enhance healing of the selected tissue.
- 23. The tissue approximation device of claim 22 wherein the material is further adapted to have anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties.
- 24. The tissue approximation device of claim 16 wherein the coating comprises an analgesic material.
- 25. The tissue approximation device of claim 16 wherein the coating comprises a material adapted to promote biocompatibility of the implantable device.
- 26. The tissue approximation device of claim 25 wherein the material is further adapted to have anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties.
- 27. The tissue approximation device of claim 16 wherein the coating comprises a material adapted to accelerate a degradation of the biodegradable supportive backing.
- 28. The tissue approximation device of claim 16 wherein the coating comprises a material having a high-tensile strength.
- 29. The tissue approximation device of claim 16 wherein the coating comprises a material having a high surface roughness.
- 30. A method of tissue approximation in a brow-lift surgical procedure comprising:
a) securing an implantable tissue approximation device to a cranium, the approximation device comprising a supportive backing which defines at least one serrated boundary thereon; a plurality of attachment points extending from the backing, wherein the attachment points are adapted to distribute a load over the backing; and an anchoring region integral with the backing; b) mobilizing tissue or layer of tissue to be approximated towards the approximation device; and c) setting the tissue or layer of tissue onto the approximation device.
- 31. The method of claim 30 wherein the tissue or layer of tissue comprises scalp tissue.
- 32. The method of claim 30 wherein the step a) further comprises removing additional portions of the backing along the serrated boundary.
- 33. The method of claim 30 wherein the tissue or layer of tissue in the step c) is set on the approximation device via the plurality of attachment points.
- 34. The method of claim 30 further comprising a preliminary step of cutting the tissue or layer of tissue by a predetermined length.
- 35. The method of claim 34 wherein the tissue or layer of tissue in the step b) is mobilized by the predetermined length.
- 36. The method of claim 34 wherein the approximation device in the step a) is secured to the cranium via the anchoring region.
- 37. The method of claim 30 further comprising d) readjusting a position of the approximation device by manipulating at least one protrusion integrally extending from the backing.
