Claims
- 1. A multilayer optical film body comprising a multilayer optical film, the film body having a periphery and comprising:
at least one melt zone proximate to and extending along at least a portion of the periphery.
- 2. The film body of claim 1, wherein the periphery is substantially in the shape of a polygon, and the at least one melt zone is proximate to and extends along at least one side of the polygon.
- 3. The film body of claim 2, wherein the polygon is a rectangle.
- 4. The film body of claim 2, wherein the polygon has at least two opposed sides and wherein the at least one melt zone comprises a first melt zone proximate to one of the opposed sides and a second melt zone proximate to another of the opposed sides.
- 5. The film body of claim 1, wherein the melt zone is proximate to and extends along substantially the entire periphery.
- 6. A multilayer optical film body comprising a multilayer optical film, the film body comprising:
at least one melt zone extending between a first and second portion of the multilayer optical film body, the melt zone being characterized at least in part by a deformation of individual layers of the multilayer optical film and being effective to prevent delamination of the multilayer optical film from propagating from the first portion to the second portion.
- 7. The film body of claim 6, wherein the film body is in the form of a strip and the at least one melt zone comprises at least one pair of melt zones extending across the strip.
- 8. The film body of claim 7, wherein the film body further comprises a plurality of holes disposed between the at least one pair of melt zones.
- 9. The film body of claim 6, wherein the film body is in the form of a strip and the at least one melt zone comprises a plurality of pairs of melt zones extending across the strip.
- 10. The film body of claim 9, wherein the film body further comprises a plurality of holes disposed between each of the pairs of melt zones.
- 11. The film body of claim 6, wherein the film body further comprises a plurality of holes forming a perforation line in the first portion of the multilayer optical film body.
- 12. A method of making a piece multilayer optical film body comprising a multilayer optical film, the method comprising:
providing a multilayer optical film body; directing laser radiation at the multilayer optical film body to form a melt zone that extends between a first and second portion of the multilayer optical film body; and severing the multilayer optical film body in the first zone to form an edge proximate the melt zone.
- 13. The method of claim 12, wherein at least a first liner is removably applied to the multilayer optical film body before the directing step.
- 14. The method of claim 13, wherein the laser radiation is directed at the multilayer optical film through the first liner, and wherein the first liner is removed from the multilayer optical film body after the directing step.
- 15. The method of claim 12, further comprising forming holes defining a perforation line in the first portion.
- 16. The method of claim 12, wherein the severing step produces delamination of the multilayer optical film in the first zone.
- 17. The method of claim 12, wherein the severing step is performed after the directing step.
- 18. The method of claim 12, wherein the directing step forms a plurality of distinct melt zones, and wherein the severing step severs the multilayer optical film body between pairs of melt zones.
