Claims
- 1. A record blank, for use with a recording laser providing light of a given frequency; said record blank comprising the combination of:
- a substrate;
- a layer of material exhibiting high reflectivity at said given frequency, said layer overlying a surface of said substrate; and
- a coating of material exhibiting high absorptivity at said given frequency, said coating overlying said layer;
- wherein the thickness of said reflective layer, and the optical constants of said substrate, said reflective layer material, and said absorptive coating material are such that said substrate and the materials overlying said substrate form a multilayer optical element which possesses, with respect to reflectance at the surface of said coating remote from said reflective layer for light of said given frequency directed toward said substrate through said overlying materials, a reflectance versus coating thickness characteristic having a plurality of separate reflectance minimums at speed coating thickness values; and
- wherein the thickness of said coating is substantially equal to the lowest of said spaced coating thickness values.
- 2. A record blank in accordance with claim 1 wherein provision of said coating with said thickness substantially equal to the lowest of said spaced coating thickness values establishes at said remote surface of said coating an antireflection condition effecting a cancellation of light reflection thereat of such completeness that the reflectance for said multilayer optical element at said remote surface is substantially zero for said directed light of said given frequency; and
- wherein the reflectance of said layer for light of said given frequency is sufficiently great to effect, for those portions of said directed light reaching said layer, a substantially complete return of those light portions to said coating;
- whereby light of said given frequency directed toward said substrate through said coating is substantially confined between said layer and said remote surface of said coating.
- 3. A record blank for use in optical recording comprising, in combination;
- a substrate;
- a layer of material exhibiting high reflectivity over at least a given portion of the light spectrum; said layer overlying a surface of said substrate; and
- a coating of material exhibiting high absorptivity over at least said given portion of the light spectrum; said coating overlying said layer;
- wherein the thickness of said coating, the thickness of said reflective layer, and the optical constants of said substrate, said reflective layer material, and said absorptive coating material are such as to establish, at the surface of said coating remote from said reflective layer, for light of a given frequency within said given spectrum portion and directed toward said substrate through said overlying material, an antireflection condition effecting a cancellation of reflected light thereat of such completeness that said record blank exhibits substantially zero reflectance at said remote surface for such directed light; and
- wherein the reflectance of said reflective layer for light of said given frequency is such as to effect, for those portions of said directed light reaching said reflective layer, a return of light to said coating of such completeness as to substantially preclude passage of said directed light to said substrate;
- whereby the efficiency of heating of said coating by light of said given frequency directed toward said substrate through said overlying materials is promoted by the substantial confinement of such directed light between said reflective layer and said surface of said coating remote from said reflective layer.
- 4. A record blank, for use in production of a record information track exhibiting variations in the reflectance of light of a given frequency in representation of recorded information, comprising:
- a substrate;
- a structure, exhibiting high reflectivity for light at said given frequency, overlying a surface of said substrate;
- and
- a coating of material exhibiting high absorptivity at said given frequency; said coating overlying said reflective structure;
- wherein the thickness of said reflective structure, and the optical constants of said substrate, said reflective structure, and said absorptive coating material are such that said substrate and the materials overlying said substrate form a multilayer optical element which possesses, with respect to reflectance at the surface of said coating remote from said reflective structure for light of said given frequency and directed toward said substrate through said overlying materials, a reflectance versus absorptive coating thickness characteristic having a plurality of separate reflectance minimums at spaced coating thickness values, with the reflectance for the lowest of said spaced coating thickness values being substantially zero; and
- wherein the thickness of said coating is substantially equal to the lowest of said spaced coating thickness values.
- 5. Apparatus in accordance with claim 4 wherein said reflective structure comprises a metal layer overlying said substrate, the reflectance of said metal laeyr for light of said given frequency being sufficiently great that light of said given frequency directed toward said substrate through said coating is substantially confined between said metal layer and said remote surface of said coating.
