Claims
- 1. A multilayered container, comprising:
a layer of a formable polymer; and a layer of a composition comprising a blend of (i) a polyester material, (ii) a vinyl alcohol material, and (iii) an amorphous polyamide material, wherein the blend comprises less than 55% by weight of the vinyl alcohol material.
- 2. The container of claim 1, wherein the composition comprises between 20 and 55% by weight of the vinyl alcohol material.
- 3. The container of claim 1, wherein the composition comprises between 40 and 55% by weight of the vinyl alcohol material.
- 4. The container of claim 1, wherein the composition comprises between 20 and 80% by weight polyethylene terephthalate.
- 5. The container of claim 3, wherein the composition comprises between 30 and 70% by weight polyethylene terephthalate.
- 6. The container of claim 1, further comprising an oxygen scavenging material.
- 7. The container of claim 1, wherein the oxygen scavenging material forms active metal complexes having capacity to bond with oxygen for conferring high oxygen barrier properties to the composition.
- 8. The container of claim 1, wherein the oxygen scavenging material comprises cobalt.
- 9. The container of claim 1, wherein the oxygen scavenging material comprises mixed metal nanoparticles.
- 10. The container of claim 1, wherein the vinyl alcohol material comprises ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer.
- 11. The container of claim 10, wherein the ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer comprises between 25 and 50 mol % ethylene content.
- 12. The container of claim 1, wherein the vinyl alcohol material has a melt index between about 20 to 1.
- 13. The container of claim 1, wherein the polyester material is selected from the group consisting of PET, PC-PET, PETG, PEN, and PBT.
- 14. The container of claim 1, wherein the polyester material is PET having a viscosity average molecular weight between 36,000 and 103,000 Dalton.
- 15. A multilayered container, comprising:
a layer of a formable polymer; and a layer of a composition comprising a blend of (i) a polyester material, (ii) a vinyl alcohol material, and (iii) a functionalized polyolefin wherein the blend comprises less than 55% by weight of the vinyl alcohol material.
- 16. The container of claim 15, wherein the functionalized polyolefin comprises maleic anhydride functionality.
- 17. The container of claim 1 or 15, wherein the blend, when formed into three-layer (PET-Blend-PET), 295 ml beverage bottles having a total wall thickness of 0.051 cm and a core layer of 5% of the total wall thickness, exhibit less than 15% loss of CO2 over a 7.5 week period.
- 18. The container of claim 1 or 15, wherein the blend, when formed into three-layer (PET-Blend-PET), 295 ml beverage bottles having a total wall thickness of 0.051 cm and a core layer of 5% of the total wall thickness, exhibit less than 0.02 cc/pkg/day transmission of O2.
- 19. A composition suitable for use in forming a layer in a multilayered container comprising a blend of:
between 20 and 80% by weight of a polyester material; up to 25% by weight of a functionalized polyolefin material; and between 20 and 70% by weight of a vinyl alcohol material.
- 20. The composition of claim 19, wherein the blend comprises between 30 and 70% by weight of the polyester material; between 0.5 and 20% by weight of the functionalized polyolefin material; and between 25 and 60% by weight of the vinyl alcohol material.
- 21. The composition of claim 19, wherein the vinyl alcohol material comprises ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer and has a melt index between about 20 to 1.
- 22. The composition of claim 19, wherein the polyester material is PET having a viscosity average molecular weight between 36,000 aid 103,000 Dalton.
- 23. The composition of claim 19, wherein the functionalized polyolefin comprises maleic anhydride functionality.
- 24. The composition of claim 19, further comprising an amorphous polyamide and an oxygen scavenging material.
- 25. A preform for expansion into a hollow plastic container body, the preform having a multilayered body-forming portion including:
a core layer comprising the composition of claims 1 to 24; and inner and outer layers of a formable polymer composition.
- 26. The preform of claim 25, wherein the formable polymer composition comprises polyethylene terephthalate.
- 27. The preform of claim 26, wherein the preform has been expanded into a hollow plastic container body.
- 28. The expanded preform of claim 27, wherein the core layer has an average thickness of between 1 and 10 percent of the overall thickness of the body.
- 29. A container having a hollow plastic multiplayer body, including:
a core layer comprising the composition of claims 1 to 24; and inner and outer layers of a formable polymer.
- 30. The container of claim 29, wherein the core layer has a thickness of between about 2 and 8 percent or the total wall thickness.
- 31. The container of claim 30, wherein the inner and outer layers comprise virgin PET and further comprising inner and outer intermediate layers of a polymer selected from the group consisting of EVOH, PEN, PVDC, nylon 6, MXD-6, LCP, amorphous nylon, PAN, SAN, and AMOSORB and PC-PET.
- 32. A method of producing a container having a multilayered wall, comprising the steps of:
providing a core layer blend material of claims 1 to 24; providing an inner and outer layer material of a formable polymer; co-injecting the core layer blend material and the inner and outer layer materials to form a multilayered preform; and expanding the preform to form a container.
- 33. A method of producing a container having a multilayered wall, comprising the steps of:
providing a core layer blend material of claims 1 to 24; providing an inner and outer layer material of a formable polymer; extruding a multilayer parison tube having inner and outer layers of the formable polymer and the core layer blend material; clamping the parison tube into a hollow cavity mold blowing the parison against the cavity; and trimming the molded container.
