Claims
- 1. Apparatus for making multiple reproductions of the projected image of an object, said apparatus comprising:
- (a) means carrying an electrophotographic member having a substrate with a photoconductive coating comprising an r.f. sputtered thin film, microcrystalline, wholly inorganic, dense, semiconductor material wherein the crystallites forming the coating are generally orthogonally oriented relative to the substrate, the coating having a dark resistivity of at least 10.sup.-14 ohm-centimeters and a ratio of dark and light resistivity of at least 10.sup.4 and being electrically anisotropic, the coating at least being capable of accepting a charge and holding said charge at or below the surface to the extent that the latent image which is capable of being achieved thereat is substantially unaffected by toner development or transfer,
- (b) a charging station having charging means proximate the coating for charging same only from the coating side of said member with a uniform charge at or below the surfae thereof and said coating being capable of holding the charge thereat,
- (c) an exposure station including image projection means located immediately following the charging station for exposing the charged coating after the completion of charging to a projected image of the object to achieve a latent charge image with the charge at or below the surface of the coating,
- (d) a toning station proximate the coating downstream from the exposure station and having toning means for toning the coating to achieve a visible toned image,
- (e) an image transfer station having transfer means for transferring the toned image to a receptor to achieve a copy of the projected image,
- (f) transport means for transporting the electrophotographic member and the respective stations relative to one another in a consecutive order seriatim for the operation of said respective means for charging, exposure, toning and transfer, said transport means being operative to repeat operation of the toning and transfer means while the charging and exposing means are disabled to provide second and more copies of the projected image in the absence of recharging and exposure and without heating or further charging to establish electric fields, the toning and transferring being effected while substantially maintaining the charge relationship and magnitude thereof along the dark decay curve characteristic of said photoconductive coating so that at least transfer is effected for plural copies without requiring supplementation of the fields representing the latent image, and means for controlling the operation of all said previously mentioned means in predetermined timed relation to one another.
- 2. Apparatus as claimed in claim 1 in which the transport means are rotary and the stations are disposed in circumferentially spaced relation about said transport means.
- 3. Apparatus as claimed in claim 1 in which said control means include speed control means arranged to disable operation of the charging and exposure means and to increase the speed of said transport means when repeat copies are being made.
- 4. Apparatus as claimed in claim 1 in which said control means include structure for disabling said charging and exposure means while repeat copies are being made, in which a densitometer is provided to monitor the image after transfer and provide a signal responsive to the density of the copy image as related to a predetermined standard and in which said last mentioned structure is operated by said signal to enable said charging and exposure means for one repeat thereof only.
- 5. Apparatus as claimed in claim 4 in which the transport means are rotary, the stations are disposed in circumferentially spaced relation about said transport means and in which the enabling of said charging and exposure means is effective for only one revolution of said transport means.
- 6. Apparatus as claimed in claim 1 including means to fix the transferred toned image.
- 7. The apparatus as claimed in claim 1 in which each said receptor comprises an independent sheet member.
- 8. The apparatus as claimed in claim 7 in which there is a receptor supply and said receptor moving means comprise a sheet feeding device arranged to move sheet members from the receptor supply into said transfer station.
