Claims
- 1. A noise-reduced system for electro-optically reading indicia, comprising:
- a) a light source for directing light at an indicium for reflection therefrom;
- b) a sensor for detecting light reflected off the indicium, the reflected light having a wavefront of a predetermined shape, the sensor being operative for generating an electrical signal corresponding to the detected reflected light; and
- c) an optical bandpass filter for transmitting the reflected light to the sensor, the filter having a dielectric-coated surface that is incident to the reflected light and that has a shape matching the predetermined shape of the wavefront of the incident reflected light to reduce filter bandwidth and limit ambient noise.
- 2. The system as claimed in claim 1, wherein the light source is a laser.
- 3. The system as claimed in claim 2, wherein the laser emits light in a visible range of frequencies.
- 4. The system as claimed in claim 1, wherein the indicium is a bar code symbol having bars and spaces of different light reflectivity, and wherein the light is emitted as a beam to the symbol, and wherein the sensor has a field of view; and further comprising a scanner for scanning at least one of the light beam and the field of view across the symbol to be read.
- 5. The system as claimed in claim 4, wherein the scanner is a moving beam scanner for sweeping the light beam a plurality of times across the symbol.
- 6. The system as claimed in claim 1, wherein the sensor is a photodiode.
- 7. The system as claimed in claim 1, wherein the sensor is a charge coupled device array.
- 8. The system as claimed in claim 1, wherein the shape of the dielectric-coated surface is concave.
- 9. The system as claimed in claim 1; and further comprising a housing for supporting the light source, the sensor and the filter.
- 10. The system as claimed in claim 9, wherein the housing has a handle for gripping by a human operator.
- 11. A noise-reduced method of electro-optically reading indicia, comprising the steps of:
- a) directing light at an indicium for reflection therefrom;
- b) detecting light reflected off the indicium, the reflected light having a wavefront of a predetermined shape, and generating an electrical signal corresponding to the detected reflected light;
- c) transmitting the reflected light through an optical bandpass filter having a surface that is incident to the reflected light;
- d) coating the surface of the filter with a dielectric; and
- e) shaping the surface of the filter to match the predetermined shape of the wavefront of the incident reflected light to reduce filter bandwidth and limit ambient noise.
- 12. The method as claimed in claim 11, where the light directing step is performed by a laser.
- 13. The method as claimed in claim 12, where the laser emits light in a visible range of frequencies.
- 14. The method as claimed in claim 11, where the indicium is a bar code symbol having bars and spaces of different light reflectivity, and wherein the light is emitted as a beam to the symbol, and further comprising the step of scanning at least one of the light beam and a field of view across the symbol to be read.
- 15. The method as claimed in claim 14, where the scanning step is performed by sweeping the light beam a plurality of times across the symbol.
- 16. The method as claimed in claim 11, where the detecting step is performed by a photodiode.
- 17. The method as claimed in claim 11, where the detecting step is performed by a charge coupled device array.
- 18. The method as claimed in claim 11, where the shaping step is performed by forming the dielectric-coated surface as a concave shape.
- 19. The method as claimed in claim 11; and further comprising the steps of performing the directing, detecting and transmitting steps in a housing.
- 20. The method as claimed in claim 19, where the housing has a handle for gripping by a human operator.
