Claims
- 1. A process for producing an aqueous ambient dry paint coating composition containing a polymeric binder free of organic coalescing solvent, the process steps for producing the polymeric binder comprising:
- providing an organic mixture comprising vinyl acetate monomer and chlorinated modifier having a number average molecular weight between 150 and 5,000 and a Tg below about -20.degree. C., where the organic mixture contains between 1% and 90% by weight of said chlorinated modifier;
- dispersing the organic mixture into water to produce an aqueous dispersion;
- micronizing the aqueous dispersion under high shear to produce a micro-dispersion having organic phase particle size droplets less than 5 microns; and
- polymerizing the vinyl acetate monomer to produce a polymeric binder having a Tg less than 20.degree. C. comprising an emulsion vinyl acetate polymer containing said chlorinated modifier.
- 2. The process of claim 18 where micronizing produces organic phase particle size droplets less than 1 micron.
- 3. The process of claim 1 where the micronizing produces organic phase particle size droplets less than 0.7 microns.
- 4. The process of claim 1 where the vinyl acetate monomer, "is mixed with other ethylenically unsaturated monomer to produce a monomer mixture", and said monomer mixture is copolymerized to produce a chlorinated modifier modified vinyl acetate copolymer.
- 5. The process of claim 4 where the copolymerized monomer mixture comprises between 100% and 80% by weight vinyl acetate.
- 6. The process of claim 4 where the copolymerized monomer mixture comprises between 100% and 70% by weight vinyl acetate.
- 7. The process of claim 4 where the copolymerized monomer mixture comprises between 100% and 60% by weight vinyl acetate.
- 8. The process of claim 4 where the polymeric binder comprises between 3% and 50% by weight of said chlorinated modifier.
- 9. The process of claim 1 where the polymeric binder comprises between 10% and 25% of said chlorinated modifier.
- 10. The process of claim 1 where the chlorinated modifier is a chlorinated paraffin.
- 11. The process of claim 1 where the chlorinated modifier is a chlorinated fatty acid.
- 12. The process of claim 1 where the chlorinated modifier is a chlorinated fatty acid ester.
