Claims
- 1. A method for treating water comprising:providing a housing having a mesh collector, an inlet, an outlet and a head-space, the housing defining a water treatment chamber with the mesh collector being disposed in the water treatment chamber, the housing receiving untreated water through the inlet; heating the untreated water in the water treatment chamber for a predetermined period of time to break down bicarbonate hardness in the untreated water and form solid precipitates; removing the solid precipitates from the untreated water by depositing the solid precipitates in the mesh collector to produce treated water; and releasing the treated water from the housing through the outlet to a post mix beverage dispenser.
- 2. A method for treating water comprising:providing a housing having a mesh collector, an inlet, an outlet and a head-space, the housing defining a water treatment chamber with the mesh collector being disposed in the water treatment chamber, the housing receiving water through the inlet; heating the water in the water treatment chamber for a predetermined period of time to break down bicarbonate hardness in the water and form solid precipitates; removing the solid precipitates from the water by depositing the solid precipitates in the mesh collector; and removing fine particles from the water with a polishing filter disposed in the water treatment chamber, the water passing first through the mesh collector and then through the polishing filter.
- 3. The method as recited in claim 2, further comprising the step of collecting gases disentrained from the water in the head-space of the housing.
- 4. The method as recited in claim 3, further comprising the step of controlling volume of the head-space by releasing the gases collected during the step of collecting from the head-space.
- 5. The method as recited in claim 2, further comprising the steps of:providing a storage tank to receive water from the outlet of the housing; and moving the water from an area of the housing with the head-space to the storage tank without further filtering of the water.
- 6. The method as recited in claim 2, further comprising the steps of:determining temperature within the water treatment chamber; and delaying discharge of water from the water treatment chamber until a predetermined temperature has been reached for a predetermined period of time after the heater means has been turned back on.
- 7. The method as recited in claim 2, further comprising the step of codepositing heavy metals on the mesh collector.
- 8. The method as recited in claim 2, wherein the water being treated contains bicarbonate which during the step of heating breaks down to form carbon dioxide.
- 9. The method as recited in claim 8, further comprising the step of removing at least one of dissolved air, the carbon dioxide and other volatiles from the water in the housing during the step of heating.
- 10. The method as recited in claim 2, wherein the step of heating the water further comprises sterilizing the water.
- 11. The method as recited in claim 2, further comprising the step of controlling temperature of the heated water by applying a constant pressure to the water within the housing and allowing a small portion of the water to evaporate.
- 12. The method as recited in claim 11, wherein during the step of heating, heat input is constant and wherein temperature control occurs by varying a portion of water which evaporates.
- 13. The method as recited in claim 11, further comprising the step of determining temperature by detecting evolution of steam by evaporation.
- 14. The method as recited in claim 2, further comprising the step of controlling flow of water in the housing whereby the water has a fixed and predetermined residence time within at least one of the housing and mesh collector.
- 15. A method for treating water comprising:providing a housing having a mesh collector, an inlet, an outlet and a head-space, the housing defining a water treatment chamber with the mesh collector being disposed in the water treatment chamber, the housing receiving water through the inlet; heating the water in the water treatment chamber for a predetermined period of time to break down bicarbonate hardness in the water and form solid precipitates; removing the solid precipitates from the water by depositing the solid precipitates in the mesh collector; and preheating water by passing the water through a heat exchanger prior to the water being received in the water treatment chamber.
- 16. The method as recited in claim 15, further comprising the step of cooling water exiting the water treatment chamber by passing the water through the heat exchanger, heated water exiting the water treatment chamber being used to preheat the water being fed to the water treatment chamber.
- 17. A method for treating water comprising:providing a housing having a mesh collector, an inlet, an outlet and a head-space, the housing defining a water treatment chamber with the mesh collector being disposed in the water treatment chamber, the housing receiving water through the inlet; heating the water in the water treatment chamber for a predetermined period of time to break down bicarbonate hardness in the water and form solid precipitates; removing the solid precipitates from the water by depositing the solid precipitates in the mesh collector; passing the water through a heat exchanger after the step of removing precipitates; and reducing temperature of the water before passing the water through the heat exchanger to avoid precipitation of certain solids from the water passing through the heat exchanger.
- 18. A method for treating water:providing a housing having a mesh collector, an inlet, an outlet and a head-space, the housing defining a water treatment chamber with the mesh collector being disposed in the water treatment chamber, the housing receiving water through the inlet; heating the water in the water treatment chamber for a predetermined period of time to break down bicarbonate hardness in the water and form solid precipitates; removing the solid precipitates from the water by depositing the solid precipitates in the mesh collector; and keeping the water stored in the storage tank out of contact with air or other gases in a head-space of the storage tank by providing a collapsible water chamber including a movable hermetic barrier contacting the water in the storage tank and capable of following changes of water volume in the water chamber.
- 19. The method as recited in claim 18, wherein the storage tank has an air cushion therein, the movable barrier separating the water in the storage tank from the air cushion, the method further comprises the steps of:exerting pressure on the movable barrier by the air cushion and by the water in the storage tank, the pressure on the movable barrier being variable; increasing pressure on the movable barrier by increasing an amount of water in the storage tank; decreasing pressure on the movable barrier by decreasing an amount of water in the storage tank; and preventing flow of water into the storage tank when pressure exerted on the movable barrier by the air cushion equals pressure exerted on the movable barrier by the water in the storage tank.
- 20. The method as recited in claim 19, wherein the storage tank has a movable actuator and a level switch, the movable actuator being in contact with the movable barrier, the method further comprising the steps of:moving the actuator toward the level switch as water is introduced into the storage tank; moving the actuator away from the level switch as water is discharged from the storage tank; and terminating flow of water into the storage tank when the actuator contacts the level switch, the storage tank being full when the actuator contacts the level switch.
- 21. The method as recited in claim 20, further comprising the steps of:sensing when the storage tank is full; turning off the heater means when the storage tank is full; and turning the heater means back on when water from the full storage tank is discharged from the tank.
- 22. The method as recited in claim 18, wherein the storage tank has an air cushion therein, the movable barrier separating the water in the storage tank from the air cushion, the method further comprises the step of exerting a back-pressure on the water treatment chamber by the air cushion.
- 23. A method or treating-water comprising:providing a housing having a mesh collector, an inlet, an outlet and a head-space, the housing defining a water treatment chamber with the mesh collector being disposed in the water treatment chamber, the housing receiving water through the inlet; heating the water in the water treatment chamber for a predetermined period of time to break down bicarbonate hardness in the water and form solid precipitates; and removing the solid precipitates from the water by depositing the solid precipitates in the mesh collector, wherein the collector has baffles therein, and the method further comprises the step of forcing water to flow over a tortuous path through the mesh collector due to the baffles.
- 24. A method for treating water comprising:providing a housing having a collector, an inlet, an outlet and a head-space, the housing defining a water treatment chamber, the housing receiving untreated water through the inlet, and the collector and the head space being disposed in the water treatment chamber of the housing; heating the untreated water in the water treatment chamber for a predetermined period of time to break down bicarbonate hardness in the untreated water to produce treated water; collecting gases by disentrainment from the untreated water in the head-space of the housing; and releasing the treated water from the housing through the outlet to a post mix beverage dispenser.
- 25. The method as recited in claim 24, wherein the step of heating the water further comprises sterilizing the water.
- 26. The method as recited in claim 24, further comprising the step of controlling temperature of the heated water by applying a constant pressure to the water within the housing and allowing a small portion of the water to evaporate.
- 27. The method as recited in claim 26, wherein during the step of heating, heat input is constant and wherein temperature control occurs by varying a portion of water which evaporates.
- 28. The method as recited in claim 26, further comprising the step of determining temperature by detecting evolution of steam by evaporation.
- 29. A method for treating water comprising:providing a housing having a collector, an inlet, an outlet and a head-space, the housing defining a water treatment chamber, the housing receiving water through the inlet, and the collector and the head space being disposed in the water treatment chamber of the housing; heating the water in the water treatment chamber for a predetermined period of time to break down bicarbonate hardness in the water; collecting gases by disentrainment from the water in the head-space of the housing; removing fine particles from the water with a polishing filter, the water passing first through the collector and then through the polishing filter; and releasing the treated water from the housing through the outlet to a post mix beverage dispenser.
- 30. The method as recited in claim 29, further comprising the steps of:providing a storage tank to receive water from the outlet of the housing; and moving the water from an area of the housing with the head-space to the storage tank without further filtering of the water.
- 31. The method as recited in claim 29, further comprising the steps of:determining temperature within the water treatment chamber; and delaying discharge of water from the water treatment chamber until a predetermined temperature has been reached for a predetermined period of time after the heater means has been turned back on.
- 32. The method as recited in claim 29, further comprising the step of controlling volume of the head-space by releasing the gases collected during the step of collecting from the head-space.
- 33. The method as recited in claim 29, further comprising the step of codepositing heavy metals on a collector in the housing.
- 34. The method as recited in claim 29, wherein the water being treated contains bicarbonate which during the step of heating breaks down to form carbon dioxide.
- 35. The method as recited in claim 34, further comprising the step of removing at least one of dissolved air, the carbon dioxide and other volatiles from the water in the housing during the step of heating.
- 36. The method as recited in claim 29, further comprising the step of controlling flow of water in the housing whereby the water has a fixed and predetermined residence time within at least one of the housing and collector.
- 37. A method for treating water comprising:providing a housing having a collector, an inlet, an outlet and a head-space, the housing defining a water treatment chamber, the housing receiving water through the inlet and the collector and the head space being disposed in the water treatment chamber of the housing; heating the water in the water treatment chamber for a predetermined period of time to break down bicarbonate hardness in the water; collecting gases by disentrainment from the water in the head-space of the housing; and preheating water by passing the water through a heat exchanger prior to the water being received in the water treatment chamber.
- 38. The method as recited in claim 37, further comprising the step of cooling water exiting the water treatment chamber by passing the water through the heat exchanger, heated water exiting the water treatment chamber being used to preheat the water being fed to the water treatment chamber.
- 39. A method for treating water comprising:providing a housing having a collector, an inlet, an outlet and a head-space, the housing defining a water treatment chamber, the housing receiving water through the inlet, and the collector and the head space being disposed in the water treatment chamber of the housing; heating the water in the water treatment chamber for a predetermined period of time to break down bicarbonate hardness in the water; collecting gases by disentrainment from the water in the head-space of the housing; passing the water through a heat exchanger after the step of removing precipitates; and reducing temperature of the water before passing the water through the heat exchanger to avoid precipitation of certain solids from the water passing through the heat exchanger.
- 40. A method for treating water comprising:providing a housing having a collector, an inlet, an outlet and a head-space, the housing defining a water treatment chamber, the housing receiving water through the inlet, and the collector and the head space being disposed in the water treatment chamber of the housing; heating the water in the water treatment chamber for a predetermined period of time to break down bicarbonate hardness in the water; collecting gases by disentrainment from the water in the head-space of the housing; keeping the water stored in the storage tank out of contact with air or other gases in a head-space of the storage tank by providing a collapsible water chamber including a movable hermetic barrier contacting the water in the storage tank and capable of following changes of water volume in the water chamber.
- 41. The method as recited in claim 40, wherein the storage tank has an air cushion therein, the movable barrier separating the water in the storage tank from the air cushion, the method further comprises the steps of:exerting pressure on the movable barrier by the air cushion and by the water in the storage tank, the pressure on the movable barrier being variable; increasing pressure on the movable barrier by increasing an amount of water in the storage tank; decreasing pressure on the movable barrier by decreasing an amount of water in the storage tank; and preventing flow of water into the storage tank when pressure exerted on the movable barrier by the air cushion equals pressure exerted on the movable barrier by the water in the storage tank.
- 42. The method as recited in claim 41, wherein the storage tank has a movable actuator and a level switch, the movable actuator being in contact with the movable barrier, the method further comprising the steps of:moving the actuator toward the level switch as water is introduced into the storage tank; moving the actuator away from the level switch as water is discharged from the storage tank; and terminating flow of water into the storage tank when the actuator contacts the level switch, the storage tank being full when the actuator contacts the level switch.
- 43. The method as recited in claim 42, further comprising the steps of:sensing when the storage tank is full; turning off the heater means when the storage tank is full; and turning the heater means back on when water from the full storage tank is discharged from the tank.
- 44. The method as recited in claim 40, wherein the storage tank has an air cushion therein, the movable barrier separating the water in the storage tank from the air cushion, the method further comprises the step of exerting a back-pressure on the water treatment chamber by the air cushion.
- 45. A method for treating water comprising:providing a housing having a collector, an inlet, an outlet and a head-space, the housing defining a water treatment chamber, the housing receiving water through the inlet, and the collector and the head space being disposed in the water treatment chamber of the housing; heating the water in the water treatment chamber for a predetermined period of time to break down bicarbonate hardness in the water; collecting gases by disentrainment from the water in the head-space of the housing, wherein a collector having baffles is provided in the housing, and the method further comprises the step of forcing water to flow over a tortuous path through the collector due to the baffles.
- 46. The method as recited in claim 45, further comprising the step of providing a mesh structure in the collector.
- 47. A method for treating water comprising:providing a housing having a mesh collector, an inlet, an outlet and a head-space, the housing defining a water treatment chamber with the mesh collector being disposed in the water treatment chamber, the housing receiving water through the inlet; heating the water in the water treatment chamber for a predetermined period of time to break down bicarbonate hardness in the water and form solid precipitates; removing the solid precipitates from the water by depositing the solid precipitates in the mesh collector; and providing a filter; and monitoring a condition of the filter which changes as a function of precipitates thereon, the filter having a shorter useful life than the mesh collector, the filter blocking the flow of water therethrough with the mesh collector being only partially blocked such that water could flow through the collector but the flow of water through the mesh collector is prevented by the blocking of the filter whereby the blocked filter signals need for maintenance of the mesh collector.
- 48. A method for treating water comprising:providing a housing having a collector, an inlet, an outlet and a head-space, the housing defining a water treatment chamber, the housing receiving water through the inlet, and the collector and the head space being disposed in the water treatment chamber of the housing; heating the water in the water treatment chamber for a predetermined period of time to break down bicarbonate hardness in the water; collecting gases by disentrainment from the water in the head-space of the housing; providing a filter; and monitoring a condition of the filter which changes as a function of precipitates thereon, the filter having a shorter useful life than the collector, the filter blocking the flow of water therethrough with the collector being only partially blocked such that water could flow through the collector but the flow of water through the collector is prevented by the blocking of the filter whereby the blocked filter signals need for maintenance of the collector.
- 49. A method for treating water comprising:providing a cartridge defining a water treatment chamber and having an inlet, an outlet and a head-space, the housing receiving water through the inlet, a collector and the head space being disposed in the water treatment chamber; heating the water in the water treatment chamber for a predetermined period of time to break down bicarbonate hardness in the water and form solid precipitates; removing the solid precipitates from the water by depositing the solid precipitates in the collector; removing fine particles from the water with a polishing filter dispose in the water treatment chamber, the water passing first through the collector and then through the polishing filter; collecting gases disentrained from the water in the head-space of the cartridge; and releasing the treated water from the housing through the outlet to a post mix beverage dispenser.
- 50. A method for treating water for use in a post mix beverage dispenser comprising:providing a removable cartridge comprising a housing defining a water treatment chamber and a mesh collector disposed in the water treatment chamber, the housing having an inlet, an outlet and a head-space; feeding untreated water to the water treatment chamber through the inlet; heating the untreated water in the water treatment chamber for a predetermined period of time to break down bicarbonate hardness in the untreated water and form solid precipitates; removing the solid precipitates from the untreated water by depositing the solid precipitates in the mesh collector to produce treated water; and releasing the treated water from the housing through the outlet to a post mix beverage dispenser.
