Claims
- 1. A rewritable optical disc comprising:
- a recording layer formed of a phase-change optical recording material for recording information thereon and reproducing information therefrom, onto which a laser beam is focused using an objective lens having a numerical aperture, NA, that falls within a range of 0.55.ltoreq.NA.ltoreq.1.10, wherein the laser beam focused by the objective lens onto the recording layer is characterized by a wavelength, .lambda., and a minimum diameter, 2.omega..sub.0, given by:
- 2.omega..sub.0 =0.82(.lambda./NA);
- a light-transmitting cover layer covering the recording layer and transmitting the laser beam therethrough, the light-transmitting cover layer having a thickness that falls with a range of from 0.05 mm to 0.6 mm.
- 2. A rewritable optical disc according to claim 1, wherein the phase-change optical recording material forming the recording layer has optical characteristics that change when data is recorded thereon.
- 3. A rewritable optical disc according to claim 1, wherein the phase-change optical recording material forming the recording layer changes between an amorphous phase and a crystalline phase.
- 4. A rewritable optical disc according to claim 1, further comprising supporting means having a surface for supporting the recording layer thereon, the supporting means being formed in a plate-like shape.
- 5. A rewritable optical disc according to claim 4, further comprising interconnecting means for interconnecting the light-transmitting cover layer and the supporting means, wherein the supporting means has a thickness that is substantially the same as the thickness of the light-transmitting cover layer.
- 6. A rewritable optical disc according to claim 1, wherein the recording layer includes land regions and groove regions, and information is recorded on and reproduced from both the land regions and the groove regions.
- 7. A rewritable optical disc according to claim 6, wherein the recording layer further includes transition regions between the land regions and the groove regions, the transition regions being used for a tracking operation with respect to the recording layer.
- 8. An optical disc system comprising:
- a rewritable optical disc having a recording layer formed of an erasable and recordable optical recording material for recording data thereon and a light-transmitting cover layer for covering the recording layer and transmitting a light beam therethrough, wherein the light-transmitting cover layer has a thickness that falls within a range of 0.05 mm to 0.6 mm; and
- an optical pickup including a light source for radiating the light beam to the rewritable optical disc and an objective lens for converging the light beam radiated from the light source onto the recording layer through the light-transmitting cover layer, wherein
- the objective lens has a numerical aperture, NA, that falls within a range of 0.55.ltoreq.NA.ltoreq.1.10; and
- the light beam converged by the objective lens is characterized by a wavelength, .lambda., and a minimum diameter, 2.omega..sub.0, given by:
- 2.omega..sub.0 =0.82(.lambda./NA).
- 9.
- 9. An optical disc system according to claim 8, wherein the light beam radiated from the light source is modulated according to data being recorded on the rewritable optical disc.
- 10. An optical disc system according to claim 8, wherein the optical pickup further comprises driving means for driving the objective lens in at least a direction along an optical axis of the objective lens.
- 11. An optical disc system according to claim 8, wherein the recording layer includes land regions and groove regions, and information is recorded on and reproduced from both the land regions and the groove regions.
- 12. An optical disc system according to claim 11, wherein the recording layer further includes transition regions between the land regions and the groove regions, wherein the transition regions are used for a tracking operation with respect to the recording layer.
- 13. An optical recording and/or reproducing apparatus for use with a rewritable optical recording medium having a light-transmitting cover layer and a recording layer formed of a phase-change material provided on a surface of the light-transmitting cover layer, the apparatus comprising:
- a light source for radiating a light beam; and
- an objective lens for converging the light beam radiated from the light source onto the recording layer through the light-transmitting cover layer, wherein
- the light beam converged by the objective lens is characterized by a wavelength, .lambda., and a minimum diameter, 2.omega..sub.0, given by:
- 2.omega..sub.0 =0.82(.lambda./NA),
- and the objective lens has a numerical aperture, NA, that falls within a range of 0.55.ltoreq.NA.ltoreq.1.10.
- 14. An optical disc system for recording and/or reproducing information signals, the system comprising:
- a light source for radiating a light beam;
- a rewritable optical disc including a light beam transmitting cover layer for transmitting a light beam therethrough and a recording layer formed of a phase-change material provided on a surface of the light beam transmitting cover layer, wherein the light beam transmitting cover layer has a thickness that falls within a range of 0.05 mm to 0.6 mm; and
- an objective lens for converging the light beam radiated from the light source onto the recording layer through the light beam transmitting cover layer,
- wherein the light beam converged by the objective lens is characterized by a wavelength, .lambda., and a minimum diameter, 2.omega..sub.0, given by:
- .omega..sub. = 0. 82(.lambda./NA),
- and the objective lens has a numerical aperture, NA, that falls within a range of 0.55.ltoreq.NA.ltoreq.1.10.
- 15. An optical disc system according to claim 14, wherein the recording layer includes land regions and groove regions, and information is recorded on and reproduced from both the land regions and the groove regions.
- 16. An optical disc system according to claim 15, wherein the recording layer further includes transition regions between the land regions and the groove regions, the transition regions being used for a tracking operation with respect to the recording layer.
- 17. An optical recording medium for use in an optical recording and/or reproducing apparatus having a light source for radiating a light beam and an objective lens for converging the light beam along an optical axis thereof, the medium comprising:
- a rewritable recording layer formed of a phase-change material for recording information thereon and reproducing information therefrom, onto which a light beam having a wavelength, .lambda., that falls within a range of 100 nm to 780 nm is converged by an objective lens having a numerical aperture, NA, that falls within a range of 0.55.ltoreq.NA.ltoreq.1.10, wherein the light beam converged by the objective lens onto the recording layer is characterized by a minimum diameter, 2.omega..sub.0, given by:
- 2.omega..sub.0 =0.82(.lambda./NA); and
- a light beam transmitting cover layer provided on a surface of the rewritable recording layer and transmitting the converged light beam to the rewritable recording layer, wherein the light beam transmitting cover layer has a thickness that falls within a range of 0.05 mm to 0.6 mm.
- 18. An optical recording medium according to claim 17, wherein the rewritable recording layer includes land regions and groove regions, and information is recorded on and reproduced from both the land regions and the groove regions.
- 19. An optical recording medium according to claim 18, wherein the rewritable recording layer further includes transition regions between the land regions and the groove regions, the transition regions being used for a tracking operation with respect to the rewritable recording layer.
- 20. An optical disc system for recording and/or reproducing information signals, the system comprising:
- a light source for radiating a light beam;
- a rewritable optical disc including a recording layer formed of a phase-change material and a light beam transmitting cover layer provided on a surface of the recording layer and transmitting the light beam therethrough;
- and
- an objective lens for converging the light beam onto the recording layer through the light beam transmitting cover layer, wherein
- the light beam has a wavelength that falls within a range of 100 nm to 780 nm and is characterized by a minimum diameter, 2.omega..sub.0, given by:
- 2.omega..sub.0 =0.82(.lambda./NA),
- the light beam transmitting cover layer has a thickness that falls within a range of 0.05 mm to 0.6 mm, and
- the objective lens has a numerical aperture that falls within a range of 0.55 to 1.10.
- 21. An optical recording and/or reproducing apparatus used with a rewritable optical recording medium having a recording layer formed of a phase-change material and a light beam transmitting cover layer provided on a surface of the recording layer, the light beam transmitting cover layer having a thickness that falls within a range of 0.05 mm to 0.6 mm, the apparatus comprising:
- a light source for radiating a light beam; and
- an objective lens for converging the light beam radiated from the light source onto the recording layer through the light beam transmitting cover layer, wherein
- the objective lens has a numerical aperture, NA, that falls within a range of 0.55 to 1.10, and
- the light beam has a wavelength, .lambda., that falls within a range of 100 nm to 780 nm and is characterized by a minimum diameter, 2.omega..sub.0, given by:
- 2.omega..sub.0 =0.82(.lambda./NA).
- 22. An optical recording and/or reproducing apparatus for use with a rewritable optical recording medium having a light beam transmitting cover layer and a recording layer provided on a surface of the light beam transmitting cover layer, the apparatus comprising:
- a light source for radiating a light beam; and
- an objective lens for converging the light beam radiated from the light source through the light beam transmitting cover layer onto a recording layer formed of a phase-change material, wherein
- the light beam converged by the objective lens is characterized by a wavelength, .lambda., that falls within a range of 100 nm to 780 nm and a minimum diameter, 2.omega..sub.0, given by:
- 2.omega..sub.0 =0.82(.lambda./NA),
- and the objective lens has a numerical aperture, NA, that falls within a range of 0.55.ltoreq.NA.ltoreq.1.10.
- 23. An optical disc system for recording and/or reproducing information signals, the system comprising:
- a light source for radiating a light beam;
- an rewritable optical disc having a light beam transmitting cover layer for transmitting the light beam therethrough and a recording layer formed of a phase-change material provided on a surface of the light beam transmitting cover layer, the light beam transmitting cover layer having a thickness that falls within a range of 0.05 mm to 0.6 mm;
- an objective lens for converging the light beam radiated from the light source through the light beam transmitting cover layer onto the recording layer, wherein
- the light beam converged by the objective lens is characterized by a wavelength, .lambda., that falls within a range of 100 nm to 780 nm and a minimum diameter, 2.omega..sub.0, given by:
- 2.omega..sub.0 =0.82(.lambda./NA),
- and the objective lens has a numerical aperture, NA, that falls within a range of 0.55.ltoreq.NA.ltoreq.1.10.
