Claims
- 1. An optical recording and/or reproducing apparatus for use with an optical recording medium having a light-transmitting cover layer and a recording layer provided on a surface of the light-transmitting cover layer, the apparatus comprising:
- a light source for radiating a light beam; and
- an objective lens for converging the light beam radiated from the light source onto the recording layer through the light-transmitting cover layer, wherein
- the light beam converged by the objective lens is characterized by a wavelength, .lambda., and a minimum diameter, 2.omega..sub.0, given by:
- 2.omega..sub.0 =0.82 (.lambda./NA),
- and the objective lens has a numerical aperture, NA, that falls within a range of 0.55.ltoreq.NA.ltoreq.1.10.
- 2. An optical disc system for recording and/or reproducing information signals, the system comprising:
- a light source for radiating a light beam;
- an optical disc including a light beam transmitting cover layer for transmitting a light beam therethrough and a recording layer provided on a surface of the light beam transmitting cover layer, the light beam transmitting cover layer having a thickness that falls within a range of 0.05 mm to 0.6 mm; and
- an objective lens for converging the light beam radiated from the light source onto the recording layer through the light beam transmitting cover layer,
- wherein the light beam converged by the objective lens is characterized by a wavelength, .lambda., and a minimum diameter, 2.omega..sub.0, given by:
- 2.omega..sub.0 =0.82 (.lambda./NA),
- and the objective lens has a numerical aperture, NA, that falls within a range of 0.55.ltoreq.NA.ltoreq.1.10.
- 3. An optical disc according to claim 2, wherein the recording layer includes land regions and groove regions, and information is recorded on and reproduced from both the land regions and the groove regions.
- 4. An optical disc according to claim 3, wherein the recording layer further includes transition regions between the land regions and the groove regions, the transition regions being used for a tracking operation with respect to the recording layer.
- 5. An optical recording and/or reproducing apparatus for use with optical recording medium having a light beam transmitting cover layer and a recording layer provided on a surface of the light beam transmitting cover layer, the apparatus comprising:
- a light source for radiating a light beam; and
- an objective lens for converging the light beam radiated from said light source through the light beam transmitting cover layer onto the recording layer, wherein
- the light beam converged by the objective lens is characterized by a wavelength, .lambda., that falls within a range of 100 nm to 780 nm and a minimum diameter, 2.omega..sub.0, given by:
