Claims
- 1. An optical angular encoder system including a code disc having a fine code track thereon, illuminating means for illuminating the code track, detecting means for detecting the illumination which passes through the code track and for providing sinusoidal detector outputs as a function of the angular position of the code disc, and multiplier circuitry for providing a multibit digital output from the sinusoidal outputs by deriving a family of phase shifted sinusoids in parallel circuits, converting the family of sinusoids to squarewaves and logically combining the squarewaves from parallel circuits, the system characterized by:
- the multiplier circuitry being designed to provide a multibit digital output directly from the sinusoidal detector outputs only through one of a plurality of segments of the fine track cycle; and
- circuitry for selectively modifying the sinusoidal inputs to the multiplier circuitry such that those inputs are identical through each of said segments of the fine track cycle.
- 2. An optical angular encoder system including a code disc having a fine code track thereon, illuminating means for illuminating the code track, detecting means for detecting the illumination which passes through the code track and for providing two sinusoidal detector outputs as a function of angular position of the code disc, and multiplier circuitry for providing a multibit digital output from the sinusoidal outputs by weighting and summing the sinusoidal outputs in parallel circuits, converting the summed signals to square waves and logically combining the square waves from parallel circuits, the system characterized by:
- means for generating a plurality of sinusoids, the phase angles of the sinusoids defining equal angular segments of the total 360.degree. fine track cycle;
- segment selection circuitry for generating the most significant bits derived from the fine track, those bits being indicative of a segment of the fine track cycle; and
- switching circuitry for switching a pair of the sinusoids into a multiplier circuit dependent on the angular segment of the fine track cycle of which the most significant bits are indicative.
- 3. An optical angular encoder system including a code disc having a fine code track thereon, illuminating means for illuminating the code track, detecting means for detecting the illumination which passes through the code track and for providing two sinusoidal detector outputs as a function of the angular position of the code disc, and multiplier circuitry for providing a multibit digital output from the sinusoidal outputs by weighting and summing the sinusoidal outputs in parallel circuits, converting the summed signals to square waves and logically combining the square waves from parallel circuits, the system characterized by:
- means for generating 2.sup.n sinusoids, where n is any integer greater than one, the phase angles of the 2.sup.n sinusoids defining 2.sup.n equal angular segments of the total 360.degree. fine track cycle;
- segment selection circuitry for generating the n most significant bits derived from the fine track, those bits being indicative of a segment of the fine track cycle; and
- switching circuitry for switching a pair of the 2.sup.n sinusoids into a multiplier circuit dependent on the angular segment of the fine track cycle of which the n most significant bits are indicative .
- 4. An optical angular encoder system including a code disc having a fine code track thereon, illuminating means for illuminating the code track, detecting means for detecting the illumination which passes through the code track and for providing two sinusoidal detector outputs as a function of the angular position of the code disc, the sinusoidal outputs having a 90.degree. phase difference, and multiplier circuitry for providing a multibit digital output from the sinusoidal outputs by weighting and summing the sinusoidal outputs in parallel circuits, converting the summed signals to square waves and logically combining the square waves from parallel circuits, the system characterized by:
- means for generating from the two sinusoidal detector outputs two natural binary bits as the most significant position bits derived from the fine track;
- means for inverting the sinusoidal detector outputs;
- means for switching pairs of the sinusoidal detector outputs and their inversions to a multiplier circuit dependent on the quadrant within the fine track cycle indicated by the most significant bits; and
- in the multiplier circuit, weighting and summing the switched pair of sinusoids in parallel circuits, converting the summed signals to square waves and logically combining the square wave signals from parallel circuits to provide the less significant binary bits derived from the fine track.
- 5. An encoder system as claimed in claim 4 wherein the phase angles of the summed signals equally divide a 90.degree. angular span.
