Claims
- 1. A medium for storage of information that can be optically read comprising a substrate layer, a reflective ablative metal layer adhering to at least one surface of the substrate layer, and a transparent/semi-transparent overcoating layer adhering to said reflective metal layer, said reflective metal layer being adapted to be melted or evaporated to record information, said overcoating layer comprising at least two layers consisting of a first layer of the oxynitride of zirconium, tantalum or hafnium and a second layer of the carbohydride of silicon and said reflective metal layer comprising as percent by weight, in about 25 to about 90 percent, bismuth about 8 to about 60 percent and copper about 1 to about 25 percent wherein the reflective metal layer is partially oxidized.
- 2. The medium of claim 1 wherein the overcoating layer is sputter-deposited.
- 3. The medium of claim 2 wherein the metal layer is sputter-deposited.
- 4. The medium of claim 1 wherein the soft metal consists essentially of, as percent by weight tin (about 60 to about 85), bismuth (about 10 to about 30), and copper (about 1 to about 10).
- 5. The medium of claim 4 wherein the soft metal consists essentially of, as percent by weight metal tin (75), bismuth (20), and copper (5).
- 6. A medium for the storage of information that can be optically read comprising a substrate layer, a reflective ablative metal recording layer adhering to at least one surface of the substrate layer said reflective recording layer being adapted to be written on with a laser through evaporation or melting of the metal, a first overcoating adhered to said metal layer comprising one or more inorganic materials selected from the group consisting of an oxide, nitride, carbide, hydride, carbohydride and mixture thereof of chromium, aluminum, bismuth, zinc, zirconium, tantalum, tin, tungsten, niobium, titanium, indium, silicon, vanadium, antimony and hafnium and a second overcoating material adhered to the first overcoating material comprising silicon carbohydride.
- 7. The medium of claim 6 wherein the first overcoating material is selected from the group consisting of an oxynitride or nitride of zirconium, tantalum and hafnium.
- 8. The medium of claim 7 wherein the reflective metal layer consists essentially of, as percent by weight, tin (about 60 to about 85) bismuth (about 10 to about 30), and copper (about 1 to about 10).
