Claims
- 1. A phase detector for comparing the phase of modulation of two input signals comprising:an optical comparator for receiving the two input signals in optical form, performing a non-linear operation on the signals, and outputting a signal dependent on the relative phase of the modulations of the two input signals, and means for distinguishing a difference frequency of the comparator output, from other beat products of the modulations.
- 2. The detector of claim 1 wherein the distinguishing means comprises a low pass filter.
- 3. The phase detector of claim 1, wherein said optical comparator comprises an interferometer.
- 4. The phase detector of claim 1, wherein a first of said two input signals is an optical clock.
- 5. The phase detector of claim 4, wherein a second of said two input signals is an optical data signal.
- 6. The detector of claim 1, wherein the output of said distinguishing means is operable to alter a clock frequency.
- 7. A phase locked loop comprising the phase detector of claim 1.
- 8. A clock recovery device for recovering a clock signal from an optical data signal, the device comprising the phase detector of claim 1.
- 9. An optical receiver having the clock recovery device of claim 8.
- 10. An optical regenerator comprising the clock recovery device of claim 8, and apparatus for using the clock signal output by the clock recovery device, to retime the optical data signal.
- 11. A node for an optical network having a receiver as set out in claim 9.
- 12. A method of comparing the phases of modulations of two input signals comprising steps of:inputting the signals in optical form to an optical comparator; performing a non-linear operation on the signals; outputting a signal dependent on the relative phase of the modulations; and distinguishing a difference frequency of the comparator output, from other beat products of the modulations.
