Claims
- 1. A method for eliciting a secretory immune response in a human or other animal which comprises:
- orally administering an effective amount of a composition which comprises a transgenic plant or tissue from a transgenic plant, said transgenic plant or plant tissue contains and is capable of expressing a DNA sequence coding an antigen of a pathogenic microorganism,
- said antigen selected from the group consisting of:
- i) a colonization antigen,
- ii) a virulence antigen,
- iii) an antigenic determinant of either antigen, or
- iv) a fusion protein comprising either antigen and an antigenic determinant thereof,
- said antigen or antigenic determinant thereof being capable of eliciting said secretory immune response.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein the DNA sequence comprises any gene, combination of genes, gene fragment, or combination of gene fragments coding for said antigen.
- 3. The method of claim 1 wherein the DNA sequence is a synthetic sequence coding for said antigen.
- 4. The method of claim 1 wherein the pathogenic microorganism or virus is selected from the group consisting of Actinomyces, Aeromonas, Bacillus, Bacteriodes, Bordetella, Brucella, Campylobacter, Capnocytophaga, Clamydia, Clostridium, Corynebacterium, Eikenella, Erysipelothrix, Escherichia, Hemophilus, Klebsiella, Legionella, Leptospira, Listeria, Mycobacterium, Mycoplasma, Neisseria, Nocardia, Pasteurella, Proteus, Pseudomonas, Rickettsia, Salmonella, Shigella, Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Selenomonas, Treponema, Vibrio, Yersinia, Adenovirus, Coronavirus, Herpesvirus, Orthomyxovirus, Picornovirus, Poxvirus, Reovirus, Retrovirus, Rotavirus, Aspergillus, Blastomyces, Candida, Coccidiodes, Cryptococcus, Histoplasma, Phycomyces, Eimeria, Entamoeba, Giardia, and Trichomonas.
- 5. The method of claim 1 wherein said colonization or virulence antigen is from Streptococcus mutans or Escherichia coli.
- 6. The method of claim 1 wherein the antigen is selected from the group consisting of SpaA, GtfB, dextranase, K88, K99, CFA, LT-B and an antigenic determinant of any of SpaA, GtfB, dextranase, K88, K99, CFA, and LT-B.
- 7. The method of claim 1 further comprising two or more DNA sequences coding for two or more antigens that are the same or different.
- 8. The method of claim 1 wherein the fusion protein comprises two or more of said antigen.
- 9. The method of claim 1 wherein said fusion protein comprises a polypeptide which enhances the stability of said antigen.
- 10. The method of claim 1 which further comprises a second DNA sequence which codes for a polypeptide which enhances the uptake of said antigen.
- 11. The method of claim 1 wherein the transgenic plant is dicotyledonous.
- 12. The method of claim 1 wherein the transgenic plant is monocotyledonous.
