Claims
- 1. A packaging machine for inserting articles into containers, the packaging machine having a framework, said packaging machine comprising
- an infeed conveyor disposed along a longitudinal axis;
- a first guide rail section supported on the framework and extending over said infeed conveyor, said first guide rail section having a plurality of guide rails spaced apart from one another to define a plurality of first infeed lanes therebetween, said first guide rail section having an inlet end and a spaced outlet end, the width of said first infeed lanes being adjusted by sliding said guide rails with respect to one another on the framework of the packaging machine to a first desired width;
- a removable second guide rail section supported on the framework and extending at least partially over said infeed conveyor, said second guide rail section having an inlet end in alignment with the outlet end of said first rail section, said second guide rail section having a plurality of angled guide rails that angle away from said first infeed lanes to define a plurality of second infeed lanes therebetween of said first desired width;
- a second conveyor parallel to said longitudinal axis and positioned adjacent said infeed conveyor;
- a plurality of transversely extending selector flights releasably mounted to said second conveyor in successive relationship, said selector flights being spaced apart from one another, respectively, to define a spaced series of pockets between successive flights, said second guide rail section overlapping at least a portion of said second conveyor;
- a first phase adjustment means for simultaneously and selectively positioning a first spaced series of said selector flights relative to a second spaced series of said selector flights for varying the width of said pockets;
- a third conveyor positioned adjacent said second conveyor and moved in timed relationship with said second conveyor;
- a plurality of lugs attached to said third conveyor and spaced from one another along the length of said third conveyor;
- a second phase adjustment means for simultaneously and selectively positioning a first spaced series of said lugs on said third conveyor relative to a second spaced series of said lugs; and
- a container placer disposed adjacent said third conveyor for placing empty article containers thereon.
- 2. The packaging machine of claim 1, said selector flights being sized and shaped to be releasably attachable to one pair of a plurality of spaced and parallel pairs of flight retaining fasteners extending upwardly away from, and formed as a part of said second conveyor.
- 3. The packaging machine of claim 1, wherein said removable second guide rail section comprises a first corner guide rail assembly having infeed lanes of said first desired width, and a second corner guide rail assembly having infeed lanes of a second desired width, each said corner guide rail assembly being interchangeably positioned at the outlet end of said first guide rail section.
- 4. The packaging machine of claim 1, further comprising a selectively actuatable lane block attached to the guide rails of said first guide rail section, said lane block being constructed and arranged to prevent the passage of articles through said first infeed lanes past said lane block.
- 5. The packaging machine of claim 1, further comprising a fill block releasably attached to each respective one of said lugs.
- 6. The packaging machine of claim 1, including a third guide rail section in alignment with an outlet end of said second guide rail section, said third guide rail section comprising a plurality of guide rails spaced apart from one another to define a plurality of third infeed lanes therebetween, the width of said third infeed lanes being adjusted by sliding said guide rails with respect to one another on the framework of the packaging machine to said first desired width, said third guide rail section extending from said second guide rail section over said infeed conveyor and over said second conveyor toward said third conveyor.
- 7. A packaging machine for inserting articles formed into predetermined groups of articles thereon into one of a series of preformed article containers being advanced along a path of travel, said packaging machine comprising:
- a first infeed conveyor;
- a plurality of guide rails disposed over said first infeed conveyor, said guide rails being spaced apart from one another to define a series of infeed lanes, said guide rails defining a first rail section having an inlet end and an outlet end;
- a second conveyor disposed along a longitudinal axis and positioned adjacent said first infeed conveyor;
- a plurality of flight retaining fasteners disposed in spaced pairs and carried in spaced series along the length of said second conveyor, said flight retaining fasteners extending away from said second conveyor;
- a plurality of transversely extending selector flights for forming the articles into spaced article groups, wherein respective ones of said selector flight are received one apiece on each respective pair of said flight retaining fasteners along said second conveyor in spaced series, each said selector flight including integral fastening means constructed and arranged to be releasably attached to one of said pairs of said flight retaining fasteners;
- said integral fastening means including a spaced pair of elongate slots defined in each of said selector flights, respectively, each of said slots being sized and shaped to yieldably receive one each of said flight retaining fasteners therein, said selector flights being spaced apart to define pockets between successive ones of said selector flights along said second conveyor for receiving one each of the predetermined groups of articles therein; and
- a third conveyor positioned adjacent said second conveyor and moved in timed relationship with the movement of said second conveyor for carrying the preformed article receiving containers thereon and for receiving the groups of articles from said second conveyor in respective ones of the article receiving containers.
- 8. The packaging machine of claim 7, wherein each said selector flight comprises a unitary flight body in which said integral fastening means is defined.
- 9. The packaging machine of claim 8, each said elongated slot of said integral fastening means having an enlarged portion defined within the flight body at one end of said slot, and a yieldable detent formed as a part of said slot, said detent being positioned intermediate said enlarged portion and the other end of said elongated slot.
- 10. The packaging machine of claim 7, further comprising:
- a first phase adjustment means for selectively positioning at least a portion of said selector flights on said second conveyor with respect to one another for varying the spacing therebetween;
- means attached to said third conveyor for contacting the article receiving containers; and
- a second phase adjustment means for selectively positioning at least a portion of said means for contacting said containers on said third conveyor with respect to one another.
- 11. The packaging machine of claim 10, each of said selector flights comprising a unitary flight body in which said integral fastening means is defined.
- 12. The packaging machine of claim 11, the elongated slots of said integral fastening means each comprising an enlarged portion at one end thereof sized to receive one of said flight retaining fasteners therein and a yieldable detent formed as a part of said slot positioned intermediate said enlarged portion and the other end of said slot for retaining said flight retaining fastener within said slot.
- 13. The packaging machine of claim 7, each said flight retaining fastener comprising an upwardly extending shank and an enlarged transverse head portion formed on the free end of said shank, said head portion being sized and shaped to be engaged with said integral fastening means for attaching respective ones of said selector flights to respective pairs of said flight retaining fasteners, each said flight retaining fastener being constructed and arranged to be urged out of engagement with said integral fastening means to release said selector flights from said flight retaining fasteners, respectively.
- 14. A packaging machine for inserting articles into containers, said packaging machine comprising:
- a first infeed conveyor;
- a plurality of spaced guide rails disposed over said first infeed conveyor, said guide rails defining a plurality of spaced infeed lanes therebetween, said guide rails defining a first rail section having an inlet end and an outlet end;
- a second conveyor positioned adjacent said first infeed conveyor;
- a plurality of spaced pairs of flight retaining fasteners attached to and carried by said second conveyor along the length thereof;
- a plurality of spaced and transversely extending selector flights releasably mounted to said second conveyor in successive relationship on said pairs of flight retaining fasteners, respectively, each said selector flight including a spaced pair of elongate slots defined within said selector flights, each said slot being constructed and arranged to yield to the passage of one of said flight retaining fasteners therethrough to releasably attach said selector flights, respectively, to one of the respective pairs of said flight retaining fasteners, said spaced selector flights defining a spaced series of article receiving pockets therebetween; and
- a third conveyor positioned adjacent said second conveyor and moved in timed relationship with the movement of said second conveyor;
- each said elongate slot being sized and shaped to yieldably retain one of said flight retaining fasteners therein to attach said selector flights to one of the pairs of flight retaining fasteners, respectively, when said selector flights are moved in a first direction and to release said selector flights from said pairs of flight retaining fasteners respectively, when said selector flights are moved in a second direction opposite said first direction.
- 15. A packaging machine for inserting preformed article groups into article containers, the packaging machine having a framework, said packaging machine comprising:
- a first infeed conveyor positioned on the framework;
- a plurality of spaced guide rails positioned with respect to said first infeed conveyor for guiding the articles on the packaging machine, said guide rails being spaced apart from one another to define a plurality of spaced first infeed lanes therebetween, said guide rails defining a first guide rail section having an inlet end and an outlet end, the width of said first infeed lanes being adjusted by sliding said guide rails with respect to one another on the framework of the packaging machine to a desired width;
- at least one removable corner guide rail section supported on the framework and in alignment with said outlet end of said first rail section, said corner guide rail section having a plurality of spaced, fixed, and angled guide rails that form at least one bend in a plurality of spaced second infeed lanes defined therebetween for guiding the articles on the packaging machine;
- a second conveyor positioned on the framework adjacent said first infeed conveyor and moved in timed relationship with said first conveyor;
- a plurality of transversely extending selector flights mounted to said second conveyor along the length thereof in successive relationship, said selector flights being spaced apart from one another to define a spaced series of pockets having a width between successive ones of said selector flights, said angled guide rails overlapping at least a portion of said second conveyor for guiding the articles thereon;
- a first phase adjustment means for simultaneously and selectively positioning a first set of said selector flights relative to a second set of said selector flights along the length of said second conveyor for varying the width of said pockets;
- a third conveyor positioned on the framework adjacent said second conveyor and moved in timed relationship with said second conveyor;
- a spaced series of lugs attached to said third conveyor and extending along the length of said third conveyor;
- a second phase adjustment means for simultaneously and selectively positioning a first set of spaced pairs of lugs relative to a second set of spaced pairs of lugs along said third conveyor for varying the spacing between said lugs, said second phase adjustment means being constructed and arranged to synchronize the movement of said lugs with respect to the movement of said selector flights; and
- a container placer disposed adjacent said third conveyor for placing article receiving containers between spaced pairs of said lugs.
- 16. A packaging machine for inserting articles into preformed article containers, the packaging machine having a framework, said packaging machine comprising:
- an endless infeed conveyor moving in the direction of a path of travel;
- a plurality of guide rails supported over and spaced from said infeed conveyor, said guide rails being spaced apart from one another to define a spaced series of infeed lanes therebetween, said guide rails defining a first rail section having an inlet end and an outlet end and being slidably adjustable with respect to one another on the framework of the packaging machine to accommodate articles of different diameters;
- a second endless conveyor positioned adjacent said infeed conveyor and moved in timed relationship with said first conveyor;
- a plurality of transversely extending selector flights releasably mounted to said second conveyor, said selector flights being spaced apart to define a spaced series of pockets therebetween;
- at least two interchangeable corner guide rail sections stored on the framework of the packaging machine, each one of said corner guide rail sections being interchangeably positioned at, and in alignment with, the outlet end of said first guide rail section, said corner guide rail sections overlapping at least a portion of said second conveyor when positioned in alignment with said first guide rail section for guiding the articles thereon from said infeed conveyor;
- a phase adjustment means for simultaneously and selectively positioning a first set of said selector flights with respect to a second set of said selector flights on said second conveyor for varying the width of the respective pockets of said spaced series of pockets;
- a third endless conveyor positioned adjacent said second conveyor, said third conveyor being moved in timed relationship with the movement of said second conveyor;
- a plurality of spaced pairs of lugs attached to said third conveyor and spaced apart from one another along the length of said third conveyor; and
- a container placer disposed adjacent said third conveyor for placing the preformed article containers between spaced pairs of said lugs;
- wherein said selector flights are constructed and arranged to simultaneously move the articles from said second conveyor onto said third conveyor and into respective ones of the article receiving containers.
- 17. A packaging machine for inserting articles into preformed article receiving containers, the packaging machine having a framework and a path of travel extending on the framework from an infeed end to a spaced discharge end, said packaging machine comprising:
- an endless infeed conveyor supported on the infeed end of the framework and extending along the path of travel;
- a first guide rail section having a first spaced series of generally parallel guide rails positioned on the framework with respect to said infeed conveyor for guiding articles thereon and along the path of travel, said first guide rail section having an inlet end and a spaced outlet end;
- at least one removable corner guide rail section positioned at said outlet end of said first guide rail section and with respect to said infeed conveyor, said corner guide rail section having a second spaced series of generally parallel, fixed, and angled guide rails in substantial alignment with said first spaced series of guide rails for guiding articles along the path of travel;
- a third guide rail section having a third spaced series of generally parallel guide rails positioned on said framework in alignment with, and at, an outlet end of said at least one corner guide rail section and with respect to said infeed conveyor for guiding articles along the path of travel;
- a second endless conveyor supported on the framework, said second conveyor being positioned adjacent said infeed conveyor and extending along the path of travel;
- a first spaced series of removable selector flights mounted transversely along the length of said second conveyor, a second spaced series of removable selector flights mounted transversely along the length of said second conveyor, the selector flights of said first and of said second series of selector flights being alternatingly positioned with respect to one another along the length of said second conveyor and defining a spaced series of pockets therebetween and along the length of said second conveyor, each said pocket being sized and shaped to receive the articles to be packaged therein;
- a third endless conveyor supported on the framework and positioned adjacent said second conveyor, said third conveyor extending along the path of travel toward the discharge end of the framework and being moved in timed relationship with said second conveyor; and
- a spaced series of spaced pairs of carton lugs positioned along the length of said third conveyor for moving a spaced series of preformed article receiving cartons along the path of travel.
- 18. The packaging machine of claim 17, further comprising a first phase adjustment means for simultaneously and selectively positioning said first spaced series of said selector flights with respect to said second spaced series of selector flights for varying the width of the pockets of said spaced series of pockets.
- 19. The packaging machine of claim 17, wherein the carton lugs of said spaced series of carton lugs are spaced apart from one another a distance approximately equal to the width of said pockets formed between the alternating selector flights of said first and said second series of selector flights along the length of said second conveyor.
- 20. The packaging machine of claim 19, further comprising a second phase adjustment means for simultaneously and selectively positioning said carton lugs on said third conveyor with respect to one another along the length of said third conveyor.
- 21. The packaging machine of claim 17, the selector flights of said first and of said second series of selector flights being releasably attachable to said second conveyor.
- 22. The packaging machine of claim 17, said at least one removable corner guide rail section comprising a first corner guide rail section and a second corner guide rail section, wherein each of said corner guide rail sections is supported on the framework of the packaging machine and is constructed and arranged to be interchangeably positioned with the other one of said corner guide rail sections at the outlet end of said first guide rail section, the guide rails of said first corner guide rail section being spaced apart a distance different than the distance between the guide rails of said second corner rail section.
- 23. The packaging machine of claim 17, further comprising a selectively actuatable lane block attached to the guide rails of said first rail section for halting the movement of the articles on said first conveyor in the direction of the path of travel.
- 24. The packaging machine of claim 17, the guide rails of said first guide rail section being selectively adjustable with respect to one another for varying the distance between said guide rails to increase and decrease the distance between said guide rails.
- 25. The packaging machine of claim 17, the guide rails of said second guide rail section rails being selectively adjustable with respect to one another for varying the distance between said guide rails to increase and decrease the distance between said guide rails.
- 26. The packaging machine of claim 17, said second conveyor comprising a space series of spaced pairs of parallel flight retaining fasteners extending upwardly away from and fastened to said second conveyor, each respective one of said flight retaining fasteners comprising an elongate shank and a transverse head formed on the free end of said shank opposite the end thereof fastened to said second conveyor.
- 27. The packaging machine of claim 26, the selector flights of said first and of said second series of selector flights each comprising:
- a pair of spaced parallel slots defined within the selector flight for being received on one of the spaced pairs of flight retaining fasteners of the second conveyor;
- each said slot having an enlarged portion at one end thereof sized to receive the head of one of the flight retaining fasteners therein;
- a channel extending from said enlarged portion and being sized to permit said head to pass therethrough and along said slot as said selector flight is moved in a first transverse direction with respect to said second conveyor; and
- a yieldable detent formed within said slot intermediate the ends thereof;
- wherein said detent is constructed to yield to the shank of the flight retaining fastener as the selector flight is moved in said first direction for retaining said flight retaining fastener within said slot;
- and wherein said detent also yields to the shank of the flight retaining fastener as the selector flight is moved in a second transverse direction opposite said first direction for releasing said flight retaining fastener from within said slot.
- 28. The packaging machine of claim 27, said selector flight comprising a deflection slot defined therein with respect to said detent for allowing the detent to be yieldably moved with respect to the slot as the shank of the flight retaining fastener is moved through said slot in said first and said second directions.
