Claims
- 1. A self-locking metal screw-threaded fastener comprising:
- a metallic fastener including a leading thread end and an element having a threaded portion including crests and valleys, said valleys including cooperating thread flanks located on each side of said crests;
- a patch of crystallizable thermoplastic polymer having a lower crystallization rate than polyethylene directly bonded to said threaded portion and spaced from said leading thread end and extending around only a portion of the periphery of said threaded portion and operative upon assembly to a mating threaded member to tend to displace said threaded fastener laterally and in a direction opposite to said patch to effect locking by frictional engagement of the threads opposite said patch with the opposed threaded portion of the mating threaded member;
- said patch including individual segments of said polymer in said valleys and adhered directly to the flanks on each side of said crests;
- said segments being separated by said crests whereby the major diameter of said fasteners remains essentially unchanged and the leading thread end is essentially free of patch material;
- said polymer having a maximum crystallization shrinkage of about 3% or higher by volume,
- said polymer being a poly (alkene phthalate), and
- said polymer in said patch having a reduced degree of crystallization shrinkage of about 25% or less of its maximum crystallization shrinkage.
- 2. A self-locking metal screw threaded fastener as set forth in claim 1 wherein said polymer is (poly) ethylene terephthalate.
- 3. A self-locking metal screw-threaded fastener as set forth in claim 1 including metal particles incorporated into said polymer, said metal particles having a hardness and being present in an amount sufficient to increase the bond strength between said polymer and said fastener.
- 4. A self-locking metal screw-threaded fastener as defined in claim 1 wherein said fastener has an oxide coating thereon.
- 5. A self-locking metal screw-threaded fastener as defined in claim 1 wherein said polymer contains small bubbles therein.
- 6. A self-locking metal screw-threaded fastener comprising:
- a metallic fastener element having a threaded portion including a leading thread end;
- said threaded portion of said fastener including crests and valleys, said valleys including cooperating thread flanks located on each side of said crests;
- a quench-cooled patch of poly (ethylene terephthalate) polymer directly bonded to said threaded portion and spaced from said leading end and extending around only a portion of the periphery of said threaded portion and operative upon assembly to a mating threaded member to tend to displace said threaded fastener laterally and in a direction opposite to said patch to effect locking by frictional engagement of the threads opposite said patch with the opposed threaded portion of the mating threaded member;
- said polymer having a maximum crystallization shrinkage of about 3% or higher by volume and said polymer of said patch having a reduced degree of crystallization of about 25% or less of its maximum crystallization shrinkage;
- said patch including individual segments of said polymer in said valleys and adhered directly to the flanks on each side of said crests; and
- said segments being separated by said crests whereby the major diameter of said fastener remains essentially unchanged and the leading thread end is essentially free of patch material.
