Claims
- 1. A photocomposing machine comprising a character matrix bearing a plurality of characters, character projection means for projecting images of said characters onto a recording surface, character spacing means for spacing said images on the recording surface to form composed lines of characters, a drive motor coupled to drive said character spacing means, size changing means for changing the size of the character images projected from said matrix, and coupling means for selectively coupling and uncoupling said size changing means with said drive motor to operate said size changing means, an auxiliary matrix bearing graphic symbols, and a lamp for illuminating said symbols, said auxiliary matrix and lamp being mounted adjacent the first-named matrix, and means for selectively moving said size changing means and said auxiliary matrix relative to one another to bring said size changing means into operative position opposite a selected graphic symbol for projection of an image of said symbol onto said recording surface.
- 2. A device as in claim 1 in which said coupling means is adapted to couple and uncouple said size changing means with said character spacing means and thereby couple and uncouple said size changing means with said drive means, and means for mounting said size changing and character spacing means to travel in parallel paths.
- 3. A device as in claim 1 in which said lamp can be energized to provide illumination continuously for time periods of indefinite length.
- 4. A device as in claim 1 in which said symbols include rules forming apertures.
- 5. A method of using the device of claim 1 to form rules, said method comprising energizing said lamp continuously, transmitting the light therefrom through a transparent area on said auxiliary matrix, and operating one of the character spacing and line spacing mechanisms to form rules.
- 6. In a photographic type composing machine, the combination of a character matrix bearing a plurality of styles of characters, support means for defining a recording surface, lens means for projecting character images from said matrix towards said recording surface with a selectively variable size, drive means for driving said matrix relative to said recording surface, locking means for maintaining said matrix and said lens means in fixed relationship to one another so as to travel together during type composition and for permitting said matrix and said lens means to move relative to one another, control means for selectively operating said locking means and said drive means to move said matrix and said lens means relative to one another for changing the size and/or style of the characters being composed, an auxiliary matrix bearing graphic symbols, and a lamp for illuminating said symbols, said auxiliary matrix and lamp being mounted adjacent the first-named matrix, and means for selectively moving said lens means and said auxiliary matrix relative to one another to bring said lens means into operative position opposite a selected graphic symbol for projection of an image of said symbol onto said recording surface.
- 7. In a photographic type composing machine, the combination of a character matrix bearing a plurality of styles of characters, support means for defining a recording surface, lens means for projecting character images from said matrix towards said recording surface with a selectively variable size, drive means for dirving said matrix relative to said recording surface, locking means for maintaining said matrix and said lens means in fixed relationship to one another so as to travel together during type composition and for permitting said matrix and said lens means to move relative to one another, control means for selectively operating said locking means and said drive means to move said matrix and said lens means relative to one another for changing the size and/or style of the characters being composed, said lens means comprising a rotatable turret bearing a plurality of lenses.
- 8. A device as in claim 7 including a shutter mechanism between the lenses of said turret and said matrix to selectively enable only one of said lenses at a time.
- 9. In a photographic type composing machine, the combination of a character matrix bearing a plurality of styles of characters, support means for defining a recording surface, lens means for projecting character images from said matrix towards said recording surface with a selectively variable size, drive means for driving said matrix relative to said recording surface, locking means for maintaining said matrix and said lens means in fixed relationship to one another so as to travel together during type composition and for permitting said matrix and said lens means to move relative to one another, and control means for selectively operating said locking means and said drive means to move said matrix and said lens means relative to one another for changing the size and/or style of the characters being composed, including a support, said matrix comprising a disc with concentric rows of coded data thereon, stationary reading means mounted on said support for reading the data in said rows, said drive means comprising character spacing means for driving said matrix relative to said surface and said reading means.
- 10. In a photographic type composing machine, the combination of a character matrix bearing a plurality of styles of characters, support means for defining a recording surface, lens means for projecting character images from said matrix towards said recording surface with a selectively variable size, drive means for driving said matrix relative to said recording surface, locking means for maintainings said matrix and said lens means in fixed relationship to one another so as to travel together during type composition and for permitting said matrix and said lens means to move relative to one another, and control means for selectively operation said locking means and said drive means to move said matrix and said lens means relative to one another for changing the size and/or style of the characters being composed, said styles of characters being located in concentric rows, said lens means including a plurality of lenses, one for each of said rows, each lens being positioned to project characters from its associated row, a support lamp means for illuminating characters in a plurality of said rows simultaneously, shutter means for enabling only one of said lenses at a time, said shutter means comprising a member with an aperture, and means for locking and unlocking said member to said lens means, means for unlocking said member from said lens means and temporarily locking said member to said support while driving said matrix, and means for re-actuating said locking means when said aperture is opposite the desired lens.
- 11. A device as in claim 10 in which said shutter mechanism is in the form of an endless band with sprocket holes, and a pair of sprocket wheels for guiding said band.
- 12. A device as in claim 11 in which said locking means is a detent cooperating with recesses in said band, and said unlocking means is a selectively actuatable brake to hald said band.
- 13. In a photographic type composing machine, the combination of a character matrix bearing a plurality of styles of characters, support means for defining a recording surface, lens means for projecting character images from said matrix towards said recording surface with a selectively variable size, drive means for driving said matrix relative to said recording surface, locking means for maintaining said matrix and said lens means in fixed relationship to one another so as to travel together during type composition and for permitting said matrix and said lens means to move relative to one another, and control means for selectively operating said locking means and said drive means to move said matrix and said lens means relative to one another for changing the size and/or style of the characters being composed, including a support, guide means on said support, a carriage mounted to travel on said guide means, said character matrix being mounted rotatably on said carriage, said matrix having a plurality of concentric rows of characters, said lens means having a plurality of lenses and being affixed to said carriage, each lens being positioned to project characters from at least one row, said drive means being adapted for moving said carriage on said guide means to space characters on said recording surface, selective illuminating means for illuminating characters in only one selected row, said selective illuminating means comprising a member movable in relation to said carriage, with means for locking said member to said carriage, means for unlocking said member from said carriage and temporarily locking said member to said support while driving said carriage, and means for re-actuating said locking means when the selective illuminating means is opposite the desired row.
- 14. A device as in claim 13 in which there are two of said lenses, the first positioned between two adjacent rows, and the second aligned with another row, the magnification of said first lens being relatively low.
- 15. A device as in claim 13 in which said selective illuminating means comprises a flash lamp and flexible movable light-pipe, said light-pipe being mounted on a carriage for movement relative to said matrix to selectively conduct light to illuminate characters in one of said rows.
