Claims
- 1. A photographic element comprising a silver halide emulsion layer having associated therewith a dye-forming coupler represented by formula II: ##STR28## wherein X is hydrogen or a coupling-off group;
- R.sup.1, R.sup.2, and R.sup.3 are independently selected alkyl groups, provided that any two of R.sup.1, R.sup.2, and R.sup.3 may join to form a ring;
- R.sup.4 is hydrogen or a substituent, provided that R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 may join to form a ring when R.sup.4 is a substituent;
- R.sup.a is hydrogen or a substituent;
- each Y is an independently selected substituent with at least one Y substituent in the 2-position (relative to oxygen) having the formula --NHSO.sub.2 R.sup.f, wherein R.sup.f is an alkyl or aryl group, and n is from 1 to 5.
- 2. The element of claim 1 wherein R' is a tertiary butyl group.
- 3. The element of claim 1 wherein R.sup.a is an alkyl or aryl group.
- 4. The element of claim 3 wherein R' is a tertiary butyl group.
- 5. The element of claim 4 wherein R.sub.1', R.sub.2, R.sub.3, and R.sub.4 are independently selected alkyl groups.
- 6. The element of claim 4 wherein R.sub.1', R.sub.2, R.sub.3, and R.sub.4 are methyl groups.
- 7. The element of claim 3 wherein said at least one Y substituent contains an R.sup.f group which is an alkyl group.
- 8. The element of claim 7 wherein the R.sup.f group is an alkyl group of 1 to 4 carbon atoms.
- 9. The element of claim 6 wherein said at least one Y substituent contains an R.sup.f group which is an alkyl group.
- 10. The element of claim 9 wherein the R.sup.f group is an alkyl group of 1 to 4 carbon atoms.
- 11. The element of claim 9 wherein the R.sup.f group is a methyl group.
- 12. The element of claim 11 having a formula selected from the following in which R.sup.1 to R.sup.3 are each methyl and X is Cl:

- 13. A process for forming an image in an element as described in claim 1 after the element has been imagewise exposed to light comprising contacting the exposed element with a color developer.
