Claims
- 1. A photocomposing system comprising, in combination, a movable character matrix bearing a plurality of arrays of characters, matrix drive means for moving said arrays past a projection line in a direction transverse to said line, lamp means for selectively illuminating characters on said matrix, projection means for projecting the images of said characters onto an image receiving surface, spacing means for spacing successive ones of said images from one another on said surface, said lamp means including a carriage, track means for guiding said carriage in a path parallel to said projection line, light delivery means for delivering light to said matrix to illuminate characters thereon, and drive means for moving said carriage on said track means to select among said arrays.
- 2. A device as in claim 1 including a stationary lamp, said light delivery means comprising a flexible lightpipe conducting light from said lamp to said carriage.
- 3. A device as in claim 2 including two of said stationary lamps and two of said flexible light pipes, the output ends of which are mounted on said carriage and spaced apart from one another.
- 4. A device as in claim 1, said spacing means including a lens carriage, track means for supporting said lens carriage to travel substantially parallel to the plane of said character matrix, a plurality of size-determining lenses mounted on said lens carriage, drive means for moving said lens carriage along said track means, abuttment means in the path of travel of said lens carriage, and lens changing means responsive to contact with said abuttment means for enabling one of said lenses and disabling the others, and engagement means for selectively causing engagement between said abuttment means and said lens changing means.
- 5. A device as in claim 4 in which said abuttment means is located beyond the limit of travel by said lens carriage when composing a line of characters, said engagement means comprising means for selectively driving said lens carriage beyond said limit.
- 6. A device as in claim 5 in which said lens changing means comprises a shutter mechanism for enabling one lens and occluding another, and a toggle mechanism supporting said shutter mechanism on said lens carraige, said abuttment means including an abuttment at each end of the travel path of said lens carriage, said toggle mechanism being drivable into one of its two states by contact with one of said abuttments, and into the other of its states by contact with the other of said abuttments.
- 7. A device as in claim 6 including four lenses, further toggle linkages to selectively bring into operative position one pair of said lenses in response to contact with an abuttment surface at one end of said travel path, and for bringing the other pair of lenses into operative position in response to contact with another abuttment surface at the other end of said path, said surfaces being spaced from the axial positions of the operative surfaces of the abuttments first named.
- 8. A device as in claim 1 including a Pi-character support mechanism secured to said carriage, another lamp means, an opening in said matrix, and means for driving said carriage to selectively position said Pi characters between said other lamp means and said opening.
- 9. A device as in claim 8 including a body of refracting material in the path of the image of said Pi character, said body being dimensioned to correct for the errors in focusing the Pi character due to the location of the Pi character out of the plane of the matrix.
