Claims
- 1. A plasma pinch system comprising:
- a pair of spaced apart combination liquid emitter and electrode means, and combination liquid receptor and electrode means;
- means for establishing a fine stream of liquid under sufficient pressure in a substantially narrow, straight and focused configuration, to cause the formation thereabout of a tenuous liquid vapor preconditioning cloud surrounding the flowing fine stream of liquid; and
- discharge means for establishing an electrical voltage potential difference between said electrode means of a sufficient high voltage to cause electrical current to flow through said liquid vapor cloud for establishing initially a low density plasma therealong sufficient to emanate energy therefrom to said flowing liquid stream to heat it sufficiently to cause it to become ionized and to be converted into a high density plasma in response to said low density plasma.
- 2. A system according to claim 1, wherein said discharge means includes capacitor means for storing energy therein, and for discharging energy periodically to provide said electrical current.
- 3. A system according to claim 2, wherein said discharge means further includes switching means for enabling said capacitor means to be charged and then to be discharged alternatingly.
- 4. A system according to claim 3, wherein said combination liquid emitter and electrode means and combination liquid receptor and electrode means are oppositely disposed and include spaced-apart electrode assemblies.
- 5. A system according to claim 4, wherein each one of said electrode assemblies includes means for enabling said stream of fluid to pass therethrough.
- 6. A system according to claim 5, wherein said electrode assemblies each include an electrode composed of a conductive material being non-corrosive by said fluid.
- 7. A system according to claim 6, wherein said combination liquid emitter and electrode means includes a source of liquid under pressure, said source being connected in fluid communication with said means for enabling said stream of liquid to pass therethrough.
- 8. A system according to claim 7, wherein said combination liquid emitter and electrode means and combination liquid receptor and electrode means include means defining a chamber, said stream of liquid under pressure flows through the interior of said chamber; and said electrode assemblies are disposed in a spaced-apart manner on said means defining a chamber.
- 9. A system according to claim 8, wherein said means for enabling said stream of liquid to pass therethrough includes an inlet nozzle for admitting the stream under pressure to the interior of said chamber, and a funnel-shaped outlet collector for receiving the stream of liquid flowing within the chamber and permitting it to exit the chamber.
- 10. A system according to claim 9, wherein said combination liquid receptor and electrode means includes sump means for drawing the stream of liquid from said chamber via said outlet collector.
- 11. A system according to claim 1, wherein said liquid fluid is selected from the group consisting of water, decane, mercury, gallium and pentane having appropriate surface tension, vapor pressure, and viscosity so as to provide the tenuous preconditioning cloud.
- 12. A system according to claim 1, wherein said electrical current flow is pulsated repetitively at a rate less than about once per second.
- 13. A system according to claim 1, wherein said electrical current flow is pulsated repetitively at a rate of between substantially once per second and substantially ten times per second.
- 14. A system according to claim 13, wherein said current flow is pulsated repetitively at a rate of ten times per second.
- 15. A system according to claim 11, wherein said liquid is an electrically conductive liquid.
- 16. A system according to claim 1, wherein the flowing fine stream of fluid is less than about approximately 100 .mu.m in diameter.
- 17. A plasma pinch system comprising:
- liquid-jet pinch means for establishing a flowing fine stream of liquid under sufficient pressure in a substantially narrow, straight and focused configuration, to cause the formation thereabout of a tenuous liquid vapor preconditioning cloud surrounding a central narrow flowing fine stream of liquid;
- said liquid having appropriate surface tension, vapor pressure, and viscosity so as to provide said tenuous liquid vapor preconditioning cloud;
- discharge means connected electrically to said liquid-jet pinch means for supplying an electrical current flow through a portion of the liquid for establishing a plasma within said liquid-jet pinch means; and
- said liquid further being a substance having a sufficient mass to provide substantially black body radiation from said plasma.
- 18. A system according to claim 17, wherein said liquid-jet pinch means further includes vessel means for confining a plasma therein and a pair of oppositely disposed spaced-apart electrode assembly means at opposite ends of said vessel means.
- 19. A system according to claim 18, wherein said electrode assembly means includes means for enabling said fine stream of liquid to pass therethrough.
- 20. A system according to claim 19, wherein said electrode assembly means include electrode means composed of a conductive material being non-corrosive by said liquid.
- 21. A system according to claim 20, wherein said liquid-jet pinch means further incudes a source of liquid under pressure, said source being connected in liquid communication with said means for enabling said stream of liquid to pass therethrough.
- 22. A system according to claim 21, wherein said vessel means includes a vacuum chamber, for permitting said fine stream of liquid under pressure to flow through the interior thereof between said spaced-apart electrode assembly means.
- 23. A system according to claim 22, wherein said electrode assembly means includes a liquid emitter and a liquid receptor, said liquid emitter having an inlet nozzle for admitting the fine stream under pressure into the interior of said chamber, and said liquid receptor having a funnel-shaped outlet collector for receiving the fine stream of liquid flowing from said inlet nozzle for permitting said liquid to exit the chamber.
- 24. A system according to claim 23, wherein said liquid-jet means further includes sump means for drawing the stream of liquid from said chamber via said outlet collector.
