Claims
- 1. A coil antenna for radiating RF power into a vacuum chamber, said coil antenna comprising:plural helical conductors each having a first end and a second end, the first ends being adapted for connection to a first common RF potential, the second ends being adapted for connection to a second common RF potential, each of said plural conductors being wound about a common axis of helical symmetry, each of said second ends being spaced substantially equally from said axis and from each other.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said plural helical conductors define a solenoid having a solenoidal axis coinciding with said axis of helical symmetry.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said vacuum chamber has a cylindrical axis of symmetry and said axis of helical symmetry of said antenna coincides with said cylindrical axis of symmetry of said vacuum chamber.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 1 in which said first ends are spaced substantially equally from said axis and from each other.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 4 wherein the spacing of said first ends from said axis differs from the spacing of said second ends from said axis.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 4 wherein the spacing of said first ends from said axis is about the same as the spacing of said second ends from said axis.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 1 in which each of said conductors are substantially the same length.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 1 in which the spacing between conductors is substantially the same.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 1 in which the distance between conductors changes as a function of distance from the axis.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 1 in which the distance between conductors is substantially the same throughout their length.
- 11. The apparatus of claim 1 in which each of the conductors conform to a substantially planar surface.
- 12. The apparatus of claim 1 in which each of the conductors conform to a circularly symmetric surface.
- 13. The apparatus of claim 12 in which each of the conductors conforms to one of:a flat circularly symmetric surface; a domed circularly symmetric surface.
- 14. The apparatus of claim 7 in which each of the conductors conforms to a curved right circular cylindrical surface.
- 15. The apparatus of claim 14 wherein said conductors define respective solenoidal windings.
- 16. The apparatus of claim 15 wherein the solenoidal windings of each conductor have a separation between adjacent windings of the conductor and wherein the solenoidal windings of different conductors are offset along the direction of said axis by a distance less than the separation between adjacent windings of each conductor.
- 17. The apparatus of claim 1 in which the antenna is adapted for operation with an RF source providing said first and second potentials, said first ends and said second ends being connected across said RF source respectively to said first and second potentials.
- 18. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said first ends are coplanar with each other.
- 19. The apparatus of claim 18 wherein said second ends are coplanar with each other.
- 20. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said first ends lie on a first common plane, said second ends lie on a second common plane, and said first and second planes are parallel.
- 21. The apparatus of claim 20 in which said first and second planes are spaced from each other in the axial direction.
- 22. The apparatus of claim 1 in which said first ends define a circular locus centered on said axis.
- 23. The apparatus of claim 22 in which said second ends define a circular locus centered on said axis.
