Claims
- 1. An apparatus for plasma sterilization of articles comprising a sterilizing chamber, a plasma generator means external to the sterilizing chamber, and a plasma distribution means for distributing plasma from the plasma generator means to the sterilizing chamber;
- the plasma generator means further comprising:
- a plasma generating chamber means for generating plasma therein; and Serial No.: 576,292
- an electromagnetic wave generator for providing an electromagnetic field zone substantially in the plasma generating chamber means;
- the plasma generating chamber means further comprising:
- a generator tube having an inlet and an outlet, said inlet connected to receive a gas mixture and said outlet connected to the plasma distribution means, the generator tube being positioned in the electromagnetic field zone of the electromagnetic wave generator for generating plasma from the gas mixture; and
- a restriction means at the outlet for maintaining the gas pressure in the plasma generating chamber at from 0.1 to 10 torr.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the generator tube is a quartz tube positioned in an electromagnetic field zone of a magnetron, klystron or RF coil.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 2 wherein the electromagnetic wave generator is a magnetron.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 3 wherein the magnetron is positioned in a waveguide defining an electromagnetic field zone, and the generator tube passes through the waveguide.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 4 comprising a plurality of magnetrons, each magnetron positioned in a separate waveguide defining a respective electromagnetic field zone, and a generator tube passing through each waveguide.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 4 comprising a plurality of generator tubes passing through the waveguide, each generator tube being positioned to absorb a portion of electromagnetic field energy from the electromagnetic field.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 6 wherein the waveguide has a sidewall and a central axis, the magnetron is positioned at one end of the waveguide, and each of the generator tubes is positioned at a different distance from the magnetron and sidewall.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 2 comprising a distributor communicating with the plasma generating chamber means and with the sterilizing chamber and positioned to change the flow direction of the plasma through an angle of at least 90.degree. before discharging it into the sterilizing chamber, whereby the hot plasma formed in the electromagnetic field does not directly impinge on the articles being sterilized.
- 9. An apparatus for plasma sterilization of articles comprising a sterilizing chamber, a plasma generator means external to said sterilizing chamber, and a plasma distribution means for distributing plasma from the plasma generator means to the sterilizing chamber;
- the plasma generator means further comprising;
- a plurality of plasma generating chamber means; and an electromagnetic wave generator for providing an electromagnetic field zone substantially in the plasma generating chamber means, said electromagnetic wave generator being a magnetron;
- each plasma generating chamber means further comprising:
- a quartz generator tube having an inlet and an outlet, said inlet connected to receive a gas mixture and said outlet connected to the plasma distribution means, the generator tube being positioned in the electromagnetic field zone of the electromagentic wave generator for generating plasma from the gas mixture, and wherein
- said magnetron is positioned in a waveguide defining an electromagnetic field zone, and each generator tube of each plasma generating chamber means passes through the waveguide to absorb a portion of electromagnetic field energy from the electromagnetic field.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 9 comprising a plurality of magnetrons, each magnetron positioned in a separate waveguide defining a respective electromagnetic field zone, and each generator tube of said each plasma generating chamber means passing through each waveguide.
- 11. The apparatus of claim 9 wherein the magnetron is positioned at one end of the waveguide, and each of the generator tubes is positioned at a different distance from the magnetron in a position to absorb a portion of the electromagnetic field energy.
- 12. The apparatus of claim 9 comprising a gas distributor communicating with said each plasma generator chamber means and with the sterilizing chamber and positioned to Ser. No.: 576,292 change the flow direction of the plasma through an angle of at least 90.degree. before discharging it into the sterilizing chamber, whereby the hot plasma does not directly impinge on the articles being sterilized.
- 13. An apparatus for plasma sterilization of articles comprising a plasma generator and a sterilizing chamber, the plasma generator having an inlet means for receiving a gas mixture and a plasma generating chamber means communicating with the inlet means for generating plasma from a mixture of gases, and with an outlet for communicating with the sterilizing chamber, the plasma generating chamber means comprising a generator tube positioned in an electromagnetic field zone of an electromagnetic wave generator, and a gas distributor communicating with the plasma generating chamber means and with the sterlizing chamber and positioned to change the flow direction of the plasma through an angle of at least 90.degree. before discharging it into the sterilizing chamber, whereby the hot plasma does not directly impinge on the articles being sterilized.

This application is a continuation-in-part of copending applications Ser. No. 07/321,483 filed Mar. 8, 1989 and Ser. No. 07/475,602 filed Feb. 6, 1990 now abandoned.
