Claims
- 1. In a plastic film having a predetermined thickness sufficient for the plastic film to remain planar in an absence of a first bending moment applied across the plastic film, the improvement of a hinge comprising:
at least one linear groove configured in the plastic film to reduce the predetermined thickness of the plastic film at the linear groove and to permit preferential hinging of the plastic film at the linear groove responsive to a bending moment at the linear groove across the plastic film less than the first bending moment; and, the linear groove having insufficient depth to sever the plastic film and retaining sufficient remaining thickness at the linear groove to permit hinging and not tearing of the plastic film at the linear groove.
- 2. The improvement of a hinge in a plastic film according to claim 1 comprising:
the linear groove is a “V” shaped linear groove.
- 3. The improvement of a hinge in a plastic film according to claim 1 comprising:
at least two side-by-side and parallel linear grooves are configured in the plastic film.
- 4. The improvement of a hinge in a plastic film according to claim 3 comprising:
at least one linear groove is configured from one side of the plastic film and the other linear groove is configured in parallel relationship from an opposite side of the plastic film.
- 5. The improvement of a hinge in a plastic film according to claim 4 comprising:
each linear groove underlies a remaining linear groove.
- 6. The improvement of a hinge in a plastic film according to claim 3 comprising:
at least two linear grooves are configured in side-by-side parallel relationship from one side of the plastic film.
- 7. The improvement of a hinge in a plastic film according to claim 1 comprising:
at least three linear groove are configured in side-by-side parallel relationship in the plastic film.
- 8. The improvement of a hinge in a plastic film according to claim 1 comprising:
at least two linear grooves are configured from one side of the plastic film and at least one linear groove is configured from an opposite side of the film.
- 9. An improved plastic film comprising:
a plastic film having a predetermined thickness sufficient for the plastic film to remain planar in an absence of a first bending moment applied across the plastic film; at least one linear groove configured in the plastic film to reduce the predetermined thickness of the plastic film at the linear groove and to permit preferential hinging of the plastic film at the linear groove responsive to a bending moment less than the first bending moment applied on the plastic film across the linear groove; and, the linear groove having insufficient depth to sever the plastic film and retaining sufficient remaining thickness at the linear groove to permit hinging and not tearing of the plastic film at the linear groove.
- 10. An improved plastic film according to claim 9 and wherein:
the plastic film is a laminate.
- 11. An improved plastic film according to claim 10 and wherein:
the plastic film is a laminate having multiple layers; and, one of the layers of the laminate is metallic foil.
- 12. An improved plastic film according to claim 11 and wherein: one of the layers of the laminate is aluminum foil.
- 13. An improved plastic film according to claim 9 and wherein:
the plastic film is a laminate.
- 14. A process of configuring a hinge in plastic film comprising the steps of:
providing a plastic film having a predetermined thickness sufficient for the plastic film to remain planar in an absence of a first bending moment applied across the plastic film; impressing at least one linear groove in the plastic film to reduce the predetermined thickness of the plastic film at the linear groove and to permit preferential hinging of the plastic film at the linear groove responsive to a bending moment less than the first bending moment applied on the plastic film across the linear groove, the linear groove having insufficient depth to sever the plastic film and retaining sufficient remaining thickness at the linear groove to permit hinging and not tearing of the plastic film at the linear groove.
- 15. An improved plastic film configured for three dimensional reinforcement to maintain the plastic film in an erect disposition across a hinge between two adjoining panels of the plastic film, the improved plastic film comprising:
a plastic film having a predetermined thickness sufficient for the plastic film to remain planar in an absence of a first bending moment applied across the plastic film; at least one linear groove configured in the plastic film for dividing the plastic film into at least a first panel and second panel at a hinge extending across the plastic film, the at least one linear groove functioning to reduce the predetermined thickness of the plastic film at the linear groove and to permit preferential hinging of the plastic film at the linear groove responsive to a bending moment less than the first bending moment applied on the plastic film across the linear groove; the linear groove having insufficient depth to sever the plastic film and retaining sufficient remaining thickness at the linear groove to permit hinging and not tearing of the plastic film at the linear groove; and, the first panel angularly disposed at the hinge relative to the second panel whereby the first panel, the second panel and the hinge form a three dimensional structure to maintain the plastic film of each panel against bending.
- 16. An improved seal for joining a first plastic film to a second plastic film comprising in combination:
a first plastic film having a predetermined thickness sufficient for the plastic film to remain planar in an absence of a first bending moment applied across the plastic film; a second plastic film having a predetermined thickness sufficient for the plastic film to remain planar in an absence of a first bending moment applied across the plastic film; the first plastic film and the second plastic film joined at a linear seal fusing the first plastic film to the second plastic film; one plastic film having at least one linear groove configured in the plastic film substantially parallel to the linear seal for dividing the plastic film into at least first panel adjacent the linear seal and second panel away from the linear seal, the at least one linear groove functioning to reduce the predetermined thickness of the plastic film at the linear groove and to permit preferential hinging of the plastic film at the linear groove responsive to a bending moment less than the first bending moment applied on the plastic film across the linear groove; the linear groove having insufficient depth to sever the plastic film and retaining sufficient remaining thickness at the linear groove to permit hinging and not tearing of the plastic film at the linear groove; and, the first plastic film disposed at an angle with respect to the second plastic film whereby that plastic film having the linear groove hinges to allow the linear seal to be disposed substantially parallel to the plastic film not having the linear groove.
- 17. In a process of manufacturing an expandable gusseted bag including providing a bag having:
a front panel having two substantially parallel side edges; a rear panel having two substantially parallel side edges; two front panel gussets, each front panel gusset connected to one of the two substantially parallel side edges of the front panel; two rear panel gussets, each rear panel gusset connected to one of the two substantially parallel side edges of the rear panel; each front panel gusset connected to a rear panel gusset; each of the panel gussets foldable between the front panel and the rear panel; and a bottom joining a bottom of the front panel, rear panel, two rear panel gussets and two front panel gussets at substantial right angles to the side edges the front panel, rear panel and gussets; the improvement process of providing the expandable gusseted bag with a square bottom comprising the steps of: impressing eight first linear hinges configured adjacent the seal within each front panel and each front panel gusset and each rear panel and each rear panel gusset having one hinge; the eight first linear hinges forming folding axes configured adjacent the bottom within each front panel and each front panel gusset and each rear panel and each rear panel gusset; each folding axis extending from a joinder of a gusset at the bottom to the side edges of the front panel or the rear panel and the front panel gusset or the rear panel gusset at an approximate oblique angle, whereby on opening of the expandable gusseted bag the bottom seal of the bag disposed adjacent the gussets forms a generally triangular shaped overlay relative to the gussets to form a square bottom bag.
- 18. In combination with a gusseted bag having a square bottom when expanded according to claim 17 and wherein:
impressing at least six second linear hinges configured in each front panel, front panel gusset and rear panel and rear panel gusset, the at least six second linear hinges beginning at a junction of the first hinge to the gussets and extending centrally of the bag to permit respective folding of the front panel, rear panel, front panel gussets and rear panel gussets to form the square bottom of the bag.
- 19. In combination with a gusseted bag having a square bottom when expanded according to claim 18 and wherein:
impressing the at least eight second linear hinges are configured in each front panel, front-panel gusset, rear panel and rear panel gussets.
- 20. In combination with a gusseted bag having a square bottom when expanded according to claim 19 and wherein:
impressing each of the eight second hinges to be angularly inclined with respect to the bottom seal of the bag.
- 21. In a plastic film having a predetermined thickness sufficient for the plastic film to remain planar in an absence of a first bending moment applied across the plastic film, the improvement of a hinge comprising:
a first part of the plastic film having a first thickness; a second part of the plastic film having a second and lesser thickness; at least one linear boarder configured in the plastic film between the first part of the plastic film and the second part of the plastic film to reduce the predetermined thickness of the plastic film at the linear boarder and to permit preferential hinging of the plastic film at the linear boarder responsive to a bending moment at the linear boarder across the plastic film less than the first bending moment; and, the linear boarder having insufficient depth to sever the plastic film and retaining sufficient remaining thickness at the linear boarder to permit hinging and not tearing of the plastic film at the linear boarder.

[0001] This invention relates to plastic bag and film bag products that may be used for a multitude of purposes such as, but not limited to, fast foods, supermarkets, retail merchandise and point-of-purchase bags.
[0002] More specifically, this invention relates to a process of applying hinges and other related impressions to plastic bags and products so the products may be economically pre-folded, pre-creased or the like. This application claims priority from Provisional Patent Application 60/088,613 filed Jun. 9, 1998 by the named inventor herein entitled Plastic Film Hinging.
