Claims
- 1. A preform for plastic optical fiber, comprising:
- a core comprising an organic polymer;
- a cladding layer comprising an organic polymer and disposed on the outer circumference of the core; and
- a jacket layer disposed on the outer circumference of the cladding layer;
- wherein a refractive index modifier b having a refractive index higher than the polymer of the core is optionally added to the core, and a refractive index modifier c having a refractive index lower than the organic polymer of the cladding is optionally added to the cladding layer so that the refractive index of the preform gradually decreases from the center outward, and the core has a higher refractive index than the cladding layer.
- 2. A preform for plastic optical fiber, comprising:
- a core comprising an organic polymer;
- a cladding layer comprising an organic polymer and disposed on the outer circumference of the core; and
- a jacket layer disposed on the outer circumference of the cladding layer;
- wherein a refractive index modifier b having a refractive index higher than the polymer of the core is optionally added to the core, and a refractive index modifier c having a refractive index lower than the organic polymer of the cladding is optionally added to the cladding layer so that the refractive index of the preform gradually decreases from the center outward, and the core has a higher refractive index than the cladding layer; and
- wherein the jacket layer further comprises a functional material.
- 3. A preform for plastic optical fiber according to claim 2, wherein the functional material comprises at least one material selected from the group consisting of an anti-oxidant, a light absorbing agent and a light scattering agent.
- 4. A preform for plastic optical fiber according to claim 1, wherein the cladding layer has a thickness of not less than 10% and not more than 40% of the diameter of the core.
- 5. A preform for plastic optical fiber according to claim 1, wherein the jacket layer has a thickness which is greater than the thickness of the cladding layer.
- 6. A preform for plastic optical fiber according to claim 1, wherein the jacket layer comprises an organic polymer that contains at least 95 mol % of the same monomer or monomers as the monomer or monomers of the organic polymer constituting the cladding layer.
- 7. A preform for plastic optical fiber according to claim 1, wherein the difference between the melting point of the organic polymer of the jacket layer and the melting point of the organic polymer of the core layer is less than 10.degree. C.
- 8. A preform for plastic optical fiber according to claim 1, wherein the jacket layer further comprises a light absorbing agent selected from the group consisting of benzotriazole, benzophenone, benzoate and cyanoacrylate.
- 9. A preform for plastic optical fiber according to claim 1, wherein the organic polymer is comprised of one or more monomers selected from the group consisting of: methacrylates; acrylates; monofunctional acrylates and methacrylates; fluorine-containing acrylates and methacrylates; polyfunctional acrylates and methacrylates; acrylic acid; methacrylic acid; styrene; chlorostyrene; and mixtures thereof.
- 10. A preform for plastic optical fiber according to claim 9, wherein the organic polymer is polymethyl methacrylate.
- 11. A preform for plastic optical fiber according to claim 9, wherein the organic polymer is polycarbonate.
- 12. A preform for plastic optical fiber, comprising:
- a core comprising an organic polymer;
- a cladding layer comprising an organic polymer and disposed on the outer circumference of the core; and
- a jacket layer disposed on the outer circumference of the cladding layer;
- wherein a refractive index modifier b having a refractive index higher than the polymer of the core is optionally added to the core, and a refractive index modifier c having a refractive index lower than the organic polymer of the cladding is optionally added to the cladding layer so that the refractive index of the preform gradually decreases from the center outward, and the core has a higher refractive index than the cladding layer; and
- wherein the jacket layer further comprises a light absorbing agent.
- 13. A preform for plastic optical fiber according to claim 12, wherein the light absorbing agent is selected from the group consisting of hindered phenol, hindered amine, aryl amine, phosphite and thio ether.
- 14. A preform for plastic optical fiber, comprising:
- a core comprising an organic polymer;
- a cladding layer comprising an organic polymer and disposed on the outer circumference of the core; and
- a jacket layer disposed on the outer circumference of the cladding layer;
- wherein a refractive index modifier b having a refractive index higher than the polymer of the core is optionally added to the core, and a refractive index modifier c having a refractive index lower than the organic polymer of the cladding is optionally added to the cladding layer so that the refractive index of the preform gradually decreases from the center outward, and the core has a higher refractive index than the cladding layer; and
- wherein the jacket layer further comprises TiO.sub.2 as light scattering agent.
- 15. A preform for plastic optical fiber according claim 1, wherein the organic polymer of the core is polymethyl methacrylate and the refractive index modifier b is selected from the group consisting of butyl benzyl phthalato, 2-phenylethyl acetate, dimethyl phthalato, diphenyl sulfide, vinyl benzoate, benzyl methacrylate and diallyl phthalate.
- 16. A preform for plastic optical fiber, comprising:
- a core comprising an organic polymer;
- a cladding layer comprising an organic polymer and disposed on the outer circumference of the core; and
- a jacket layer disposed on the outer circumference of the cladding layer;
- wherein a refractive index modifier b having a refractive index higher than the polymer of the core is optionally added to the core, and a refractive index modifier c having a refractive index lower than the organic polymer of the cladding is optionally added to the cladding layer so that the refractive index of the preform gradually decreases from the center outward, and the core has a higher refractive index than the cladding layer; and
- wherein the organic polymer of the cladding layer is polymethyl methacrylate and the refractive index modifier c is selected from the group consisting of hexyl acetate, bis(3,5,5-methylhexyl) phthalate and bis(2-methylhexyl)phthalate.
- 17. A preform for plastical optical fiber according to claim 1, wherein the organic polymer of the core is polymethyl methacrylate and the refractive index modifier b is butyl benzyl phthalate.
- 18. A preform for plastic optical fiber comprising:
- a core comprising a first organic polymer;
- a cladding layer comprising a second organic polymer and disposed on the outer circumference of said core; and
- a jacket layer comprising a third organic polymer and disposed on the outer circumference of said cladding layer;
- wherein said third organic polymer comprises at least 90 mol % of the same monomer or monomers as contained in said second organic polymer and has a melting point substantially the same as that of the first organic polymer; and
- wherein a refractive index modifier b having a refractive index higher than the first organic polymer is optionally added to the core so that the refractive index of the preform gradually decreases from the center outward, and the core has a higher refractive index than the cladding layer.
- 19. A preform for plastic optical fiber as recited in claim 18 wherein a refractive index modifier c having a refractive index lower than the second organic polymer is added to the cladding layer.
