Claims
- 1. A plating system for stabilization of a bony segment, comprising:
a plate having at least a first hole therethrough between an upper surface and a lower surface of said plate to receive a bone fastener for passage into the bony segment and at least a second hole therethrough between an upper surface and a lower surface of said plate to receive a bone fastener for passage into the bony segment; and a retaining member adjacent said upper surface of said plate having at least a first aperture over said first hole of said plate and a second aperture over said second hole, said first and second apertures being sized to allow said bone fasteners seated in said first and second holes to toggle while said retaining member blocks said bone fasteners backing out of said first and second holes.
- 2. The system of claim 1, wherein said plate has lateral edges extending therealong, each of said lateral edges having a concave profile.
- 3. The system of claim 1, wherein said plate includes a first portion with said first hole and a second portion with said second hole, said first portion positionable over a first vertebra of the bony segment and said second portion positionable over a second vertebra of the bony segment.
- 4. The system of claim 3, wherein:
said first portion includes a third hole between said upper surface and said lower surface of said plate adjacent said first hole; and said second portion includes a fourth hole between said upper surface and said lower surface of said plate adjacent said second hole.
- 5. The system of claim 4, wherein:
said first portion includes an upper end extending obliquely relative to a longitudinal axis of the plate; and said second portion includes a lower end extending obliquely relative to the longitudinal axis of the plate.
- 6. The system of claim 5, wherein said first and third holes are located on opposite sides of the longitudinal axis and said second and fourth holes are located on opposite sides of the longitudinal axis.
- 7. The system of claim 6, wherein said first and second holes are located on the same side of the longitudinal axis, said first hole being located caudally relative to said third hole and said second hole being located cephaladly relative to said fourth hole.
- 8. The system of claim 4, wherein said retaining member includes a third aperture over said third hole and a fourth aperture over said fourth hole.
- 9. The system of claim 3, wherein:
said lower surface of said first portion of said plate has a curvature along a longitudinal axis of said plate that conforms to an exterior surface of the upper vertebra; and said lower surface of said second portion of said plate has a curvature along the longitudinal axis of said plate that conforms to an exterior surface of the lower vertebra.
- 10. The system of claim 9, wherein said lower surface has a convex curvature along the longitudinal axis of the plate between said first portion and said second portion.
- 11. The system of claim 1, wherein said retaining member substantially covers said upper surface of said plate.
- 12. The system of claim 1, wherein said plate includes a first bore adjacent said first hole and a second bore adjacent said second hole, said retaining member including a first through-hole positionable over said first bore and a second through-hole positionable over said second bore, and further comprising first and second fasteners positionable through respective ones of said first and second through-holes and engageable in respective ones of said first and second bores of said plate to secure said retaining member to said plate.
- 13. The system of claim 1, wherein:
said plate includes an insertion tool engagement receptacle and an alignment receptacle adjacent to said insertion tool engagement receptacle, each of which open at said upper surface of said plate; and said retaining member includes an insertion tool engagement receptacle and an alignment receptacle adjacent to said insertion tool engagement receptacle, each of which is in communication with a respective one of said insertion tool engagement receptacle and said alignment receptacle of said plate.
- 14. The system of claim 1, wherein said retaining member is positioned against said upper surface of said plate when said retaining member is engaged to said plate.
- 15. The system of claim 1, wherein said retaining member is an integral member.
- 16. The system of claim 1, wherein said first and second bone fasteners are recessed below said upper surface of said plate when seated in said holes of said plate.
- 17. A plating system for stabilization of a bony segment, comprising:
a plate having at least one hole therethrough between an upper surface and a lower surface of said plate to receive a bone fastener for passage into the bony segment; and a retaining member adjacent said upper surface of said plate having at least one aperture over said at least one hole of said plate, said at least one aperture being sized to allow said at least one bone fastener seated in said at least one hole to toggle while said retaining member blocks said at least one bone fastener from backing out of said at least one hole.
- 18. The system of claim 17, wherein said plate includes a first portion with a first hole and a second portion with a second hole, said first portion positionable over a first vertebra of the bony segment and said second portion positionable over a second vertebra of the bony segment.
- 19. The system of claim 18, wherein said retaining member includes a second aperture over said second hole.
- 20. The system of claim 19, wherein:
said first portion includes a third hole between said upper surface and said lower surface of said plate adjacent said first hole; and said second portion includes a fourth hole between said upper surface and said lower surface of said plate adjacent said second hole.
- 21. The system of claim 20, wherein said retaining member includes a third aperture over said third hole and a fourth aperture over said fourth hole.
- 22. The system of claim 17, wherein said retaining member substantially covers said upper surface of said plate.
- 23. The system of claim 17, wherein said at least one bone fastener is recessed below said upper surface of said plate when seated in said at least one hole of said plate.
- 24. A plating system for stabilization of a bony segment, comprising:
a plate including:
a first portion with a first hole and a second hole therethrough between an upper surface of said plate and a lower surface of said plate; a second portion with a third hole and a fourth hole therethrough between an upper surface of said plate and a lower surface of said plate; bone fasteners positionable in each of said first, second, third and fourth holes to secure said plate to the bony segment, each of said bone fasteners including a head with a tool engaging recess, each of said heads when positioned in respective ones of said first, second, third and fourth holes being located entirely below said upper surface of said plate adjacent said holes; and a retaining member engageable to said plate and extending at least partially over each of said bone fasteners, said retaining member having at least first, second, third and fourth engagement members extending therefrom and into a corresponding one of said first, second, third and fourth holes and engaging said tool engaging recess of said bone fastener in said hole to fix said bone fasteners relative to said plate.
- 25. The system of claim 24, wherein said plate is positionable with respect to a spinal column segment so that said first and second holes are located over an upper vertebra and said third and fourth holes are located over a lower vertebra.
- 26. The system of claim 24, wherein said retaining member includes a pair of grooves in a lower surface thereof, said grooves extending transversely to a longitudinal axis of said retaining member.
- 27. The system of claim 24, wherein said retaining member substantially covers said upper surface of said plate.
- 28. The system of claim 24, wherein said plate includes a first bore adjacent said first and second holes and a second bore adjacent said third and fourth holes, said retaining member includes a first through-hole positionable over said first bore and a second through-hole positionable over said second bore, and further comprising first and second fasteners positionable through respective ones of said first and second through-holes and engageable in respective ones of said first and second bores of said plate to engage said retaining member to said plate.
- 29. The system of claim 24, wherein each of said engagement members includes a central protrusion positionable in said tool engaging recess of said bone fastener and a recess extending around said central protrusion sized to receive said head of said bone fastener therein.
- 30. The system of claim 24, wherein:
said plate includes an insertion tool engagement receptacle and an alignment receptacle adjacent to said insertion tool engagement receptacle, each of which opens at said upper surface of said plate; and said retaining member includes an insertion tool engagement receptacle and an alignment receptacle adjacent to said insertion tool engagement receptacle, each of which is in communication with a respective one of said insertion tool engagement receptacle and said alignment receptacle of said plate.
- 31. The system of claim 24, wherein said retaining member is positioned against said upper surface of said plate.
- 32. The system of claim 24, wherein said retaining member extends above said upper surface of said plate.
- 33. The system of claim 24, wherein each of said first, second, third and fourth holes includes a spherically shaped seat and said head of each of said bone fasteners includes a spherical lower surface positionable in said seat.
- 34. A kit for stabilizing a bony segment comprising:
a plate having at least first and second holes extending between an upper surface and a lower surface thereof; at least first and second bone fasteners positionable in said first and second holes; a first retaining member attachable to said plate adjacent said upper surface, said first retaining member having apertures therethrough aligned over said first and second holes, wherein said bone fasteners can toggle in said first and second holes when said first retaining member is engaged to said plate while said retaining member blocks said bone fasteners backing out of said first and second holes; and a second retaining member attachable to said plate adjacent said upper surface, said second retaining member configured to engage said first and second bone fasteners in said first and second holes to fix said bone fasteners relative to said plate.
- 35. The kit of claim 34, further comprising an insertion tool configured to engage a selected one of said first and second retaining members for placement of the selected one of said first and second retaining members on said plate.
- 36. The kit of claim 35, wherein said insertion tool is engageable to said plate for inserting said plate.
- 37. The kit of claim 36, further comprising a guide mechanism positionable on said upper surface of said plate with said insertion tool coupled to said plate, said guide member releasably coupled to said insertion instrument.
- 38. The kit of claim 37, wherein said guide member includes at least first and second guide passages alignable with each of said first and second holes when said guide member is positioned on said plate.
- 39. The kit of claim 34, wherein said first retaining member includes at least first and second engagement members extending therefrom engageable with tool engaging recesses in heads of corresponding ones said first and second bone fasteners in respective ones of said first and second holes, said engagement members engaging said heads of said first and second bone fasteners below said upper surface of said plate to fix said first and second bone fasteners relative to said plate.
