Claims
- 1. A composition of matter comprising, in admixture,
- (a) an aromatic polycarbonate,
- (b) an aromatic polyester,
- (c) an epoxide-containing copolymer, having a glass transition temperature of less than 0.degree. C., prepared from (i) one or more olefin monomers, a conjugated diene, or a mixture thereof; and (ii) at least one vinyl monomer carrying at least one epoxide group; and
- (d) a block copolymer having a rigid "A" block of polyurethane and a rubbery "B" block of polyester, polyether or a mixture thereof.
- 2. The composition of claim 1 wherein component (c) further comprises (c)(iii) at least one vinyl monomer not carrying an epoxide group.
- 3. The composition of claims 1 or 2 further comprising (e) one or more members of the group of elastomers consisting of
- (i) a polyether rubber,
- (ii) a block copolymer having a rigid "A" block of polyester and a rubbery "B" block of polyether,
- (iii) a linear A--B--A triblock copolymer, a linear A--B diblock copolymer and a radial A--B block copolymer, containing a rigid block "A" polymerized from a vinyl aromatic compound and a rubbery block "B" polymerized from a diene,
- (iv) than five percent, by weight of the total composition, of a core-shell graft copolymer containing more than 40 percent rubber by weight,
- (v) a rubber-modified styrene/acrylonitrile copolymer containing less than 40 percent rubber by weight, and
- (vi) butyl rubber, ethylene/propylene copolymer, ethylene/propylene/diene copolymer, neoprene, nitrile rubber, polybutadiene, polyisoprene, or a mixture thereof.
- 4. The composition of claim 3 wherein, in component (e)(iii), the block "A" is polymerized from styrene and the block "B" is polymerized from butadiene.
- 5. The composition of claim 4 wherein the block copolymer is hydrogenated.
- 6. The composition of claim 3 wherein the core-shell graft copolymer is characterized in that
- (a) its core comprises a conjugated diene or a C.sub.1 -C.sub.15 acrylate, said core having a glass transition temperature below about 0.degree. C., and
- (b) its grafted phase comprises a carboxylic acid ester of a saturated aliphatic alcohol, acrylic or methacrylic acid, a vinyl nitrile compound, a vinyl aromatic compound, or a mixture thereof.
- 7. The composition of claims 1 or 2 wherein component (c)(ii), the vinyl monomer carrying at least one epoxide group, is a glycidyl ester of an unsaturated carboxylic acid.
- 8. The composition of claim 1 wherein
- (a) the polycarbonate is a Bisphenol-A polycarbonate,
- (b) the polyester is a poly(alkylene terephthalate), and
- (c) the epoxide-containing copolymer is ethylene/glycidyl methacrylate copolymer.
- 9. The composition of claim 2 wherein
- (a) the polycarbonate is a Bisphenol-A polycarbonate,
- (b) the polyester is a poly(alkylene terephthalate), and
- (c) the epoxide-containing copolymer is ethylene/vinyl acetate/glycidyl methacrylate terpolymer, ethylene/butyl acrylate/glycidyl methacrylate terpolymer, or a mixture thereof.
- 10. The composition of claim 3 wherein
- (i) component (a), the polycarbonate, is a Bisphenol-A polycarbonate,
- (ii) component (b), the polyester, is a poly(alkylene terephthalate),
- (iii) component (c), the epoxide-containing copolymer, is ethylene/glycidyl methacrylate copolymer, ethylene/vinyl acetate/glycidyl methacrylate terpolymer, ethylene/butyl acrylate/glycidyl methacrylate terpolymer, or a mixture thereof, and
- (iv) component (e)(iv), the core-shell graft copolymer, is acrylonitrile/butadiene/styrene copolymer, methacrylate/butadiene/styrene copolymer, or a mixture thereof.
- 11. The composition of claims 1 or 2 in the form of a molded article.
- 12. The composition of claim 3 in the form of a molded article.
- 13. A composition of matter comprising, in admixture,
- (a) an aromatic polycarbonate
- (b) an aromatic polyester,
- (c) epoxide-containing copolymer, having a glass transition temperature of less than 0.degree. C., prepared from (i) one or more olefin monomers, a conjugated diene, or a mixture thereof; and (ii) at least one vinyl monomer carrying at least one epoxide group; and
- (d) a linear or radial block copolymer having a rigid block of polyester which has a glass transition temperature above 23.degree. C., and a rubbery block of polyether which has a glass transition temperature below 25.degree. C.
- 14. The composition of claim 13 wherein component (c) further comprises (c)(iii) at least one vinyl monomer not carrying an epoxide group.
- 15. The composition of claims 13 or 14 further comprising (e) one or more members of the group of elastomers consisting of
- (i) a polyether rubber,
- (ii) a block copolymer having a rigid "A" block of polyuethane and a rubbery "B" block of polyester, polyether or a mixture thereof,
- (iii) a linear A--B--A triblock copolymer, a linear A--B diblock copolymer and a radial A--B block copolymer, containing a rigid block "A" polymerized from a vinyl aromatic compound and a rubbery block "B" polymerized from a diene,
- (iv) less than five percent, by weight of the total composition, of a core-shell graft copolymer containing more than 40 percent rubber by weight,
- (v) a rubber-modified styrene/acrylonitrile copolymer containing less than 40 percent rubber by weight, and
- (vi) butyl rubber, ethylene/propylene copolymer, ethylene/propylene/diene copolymer, neoprene, nitrile rubber, polybutadiene, polyisoprene, or a mixture thereof.
- 16. The composition of claim 15 wherein, in component (e)(iii), the block "A" is polymerized from styrene and the block "B" is polymerized from butadiene.
- 17. The composition of claim 16 wherein the block copolymer is hydrogenated.
- 18. The composition of claim 15 wherein the core-shell graft copolymer is characterized in that
- (a) its core comprises a conjugated diene or a C.sub.1 -C.sub.15 acrylate, said core having a glass transition temperature below about 0.degree. C., and
- (b) its grafted phase comprises a carboxylic acid ester of a saturated aliphatic alcohol, acrylic or methacrylic acid, a vinyl nitrile compound, a vinyl aromatic compound, or a mixture thereof.
- 19. The composition of claims 13 or 14 wherein component (c)(ii), the vinyl monomer carrying at least one epoxide group, is a glycidyl ester of an unsaturated carboxylic acid.
- 20. The composition of claim 13 wherein
- (a) the polycarbonate is a Bisphenol-A polycarbonate,
- (b) the polyester is a poly(alkylene terephthalate), and
- (c) the epoxide-containing copolymer is ethylene/glycidyl methacrylate copolymer.
- 21. The composition of claim 14 wherein
- (a) the polycarbonate is a Bisphenol-A polycarbonate,
- (b) the polyester is a poly(alkylene terephthalate), and
- (c) the epoxide-containing copolymer is ethylene/vinyl acetate/glycidyl methacrylate terpolymer, ethylene/butyl acrylate/glycidyl methacrylate terpolymer, or a mixture thereof.
- 22. The composition of claim 15 wherein
- (i) component (a), the polycarbonate, is a Bisphenol-A polycarbonate,
- (ii) component (b), the polyester, is a poly(alkylene terephthalate),
- (iii) component (c), the epoxide-containing copolymer, is ethylene/glycidyl methacrylate copolymer, ethylene/vinyl acetate/glycidyl methacrylate terpolymer, ethylene/butyl acrylate/glycidyl methacrylate terpolymer, or a mixture thereof, and
- (iv) component (e)(iv), the core-shell graft copolymer, is acrylonitrile/butadiene/styrene copolymer, methacrylate/butadiene/styrene copolymer, or a mixture thereof.
- 23. The composition of claims 13 or 14 in the form of a molded article.
- 24. The composition of claim 15 in the form of a molded article.
- 25. A composition of matter comprising, in admixture,
- (a) an aromatic polycarbonate,
- (b) an aromatic polyester,
- (c) an epoxide-containing copolymer, having a glass transition temperature of less than 0.degree. C., prepared from (i) one or more olefin monomers, a conjugated diene, or a mixture thereof; and (ii) at least one vinyl monomer carrying at least one epoxide group; and
- (d) a polyether rubber.
- 26. The composition of claim 25 wherein component (c) further comprises (c)(iii) at least one vinyl monomer not carrying an epoxide group
- 27. The composition of claims 25 or 26 further comprising (e) one or more members of the group of elastomers consisting of
- (i)one or more members of the group of thermoplastic elastomers consisting of a linear A--B--A triblock copolymer, a linear A--B diblock copolymer and a radial A--B block copolymer, containing a rigid block "A" having a glass transition temperature above 23.degree. C. and a rubbery block "B" having a glass transition temperature below 25.degree. C.,
- (ii)less than five percent, by weight of the total composition, of a core-shell graft copolymer containing more than 40 percent rubber by weight,
- (iii)a rubber-modified styrene/acrylonitrile copolymer containing less than 40 percent rubber by weight, and
- (iv) butyl rubber, ethylene/propylene copolymer, ethylene/propylene/diene copolymer, neoprene, nitrile rubber, polybutadiene, polyisoprene, or a mixture thereof.
- 28. The composition of claim 27 wherein component (e)(i) is a block copolymer having a rigid "A" block of polyester and a rubbery "B" block of polyether.
- 29. The composition of claim 27 wherein component (e)(i) is a block copolymer having a rigid "A" block of polyurethane and a rubbery "B" block of polyester, polyether or a mixture thereof.
- 30. The composition of claim 27 wherein component (e)(i) is selected from one or more of a linear A--B--A triblock copolymer, a linear A--B diblock copolymer and a radial A--B block copolymer, containing a rigid block "A" polymerized from a vinyl aromatic compound and a rubbery block "B" polymerized from a diene.
- 31. The composition of claim 30 wherein the block "A" is polymerized from styrene and the block "B" is polymerized from butadiene.
- 32. The composition of claim 31 wherein the block copolymer is hydrogenated.
- 33. The composition of claim 27 wherein the core-shell graft copolymer is characterized in that
- (a) its core comprises a conjugated diene or a C.sub.1 -C.sub.15 acrylate, said core having a glass transition temperature below about 0.degree. C., and
- (b) its grafted phase comprises a carboxylic acid ester of a saturated aliphatic alcohol, acrylic or methacrylic acid, a vinyl nitrile compound, a vinyl aromatic compound, or a mixture thereof.
- 34. The composition of claims 25 or 26 wherein component (c)(ii), the vinyl monomer carrying at least one epoxide group, is a glycidyl ester of an unsaturated carboxylic acid.
- 35. The composition of claim 25 wherein
- (a) the polycarbonate is a Bisphenol-A polycarbonate,
- (b) the polyester is a poly(alkylene terephthalate), and
- (c) the epoxide-containing copolymer is ethylene/glycidyl methacrylate copolymer.
- 36. The composition of claim 26 wherein
- (a) the polycarbonate is a Bisphenol-A polycarbonate,
- (b) the polyester is a poly(alkylene terephthalate), and
- (c) the epoxide-containing copolymer is ethylene/vinyl acetate/glycidyl methacrylate terpolymer, ethylene/butyl acrylate/glycidyl methacrylate terpolymer, or a mixture thereof.
- 37. The composition of claim 27 wherein
- (i) component (a), the polycarbonate, is a Bisphenol-A polycarbonate,
- (ii) component (b), the polyester, is a poly(alkylene terephthalate),
- (iii) component (c), the epoxide-containing copolymer, is ethylene/glycidyl methacrylate copolymer, ethylene/vinyl acetate/glycidyl methacrylate terpolymer, ethylene/butyl acrylate/glycidyl methacrylate terpolymer, or a mixture thereof, and
- (iv) component (e)(ii), the core-shell graft copolymer, is acrylonitrile/butadiene/styrene copolymer, methacrylate/butadiene/styrene copolymer, or a mixture thereof.
- 38. The composition of claims 25 or 26 in the form of a molded article.
- 39. The composition of claim 27 in the form of a molded article.
- 40. The composition of claims 1 or 2 further comprising a filler.
- 41. The composition of claim 40 wherein the filler is talc, clay or mica.
- 42. The composition of claims 13 or 14 further comprising a filler.
- 43. The composition of claim 42 wherein the filler is talc, clay or mica.
- 44. The composition of claims 25 or 26 further comprising a filler.
