Claims
- 1. A cellular communication system comprising:
- a system backbone;
- at least one mobile communication unit for communicating with the system backbone, the at least one mobile communication unit including a transmitter for transmitting wireless communication, and receiver for receiving wireless communication;
- a plurality of base stations coupled to the system backbone and capable of serving as an intermediary between the system backbone and the at least one mobile communication unit, each of the plurality of base stations having a communication cell coverage area, the plurality of base stations further including:
- a receiver system for receiving wireless communication;
- a transmitter system for transmitting wireless communication;
- cell coverage area varying circuitry for varying the communication cell coverage area by controlling at least one of sensitivity of the receiver system and power level of the transmitter system in order to approximately locate the at least one communication unit; and
- a first antenna;
- wherein, during at least a portion of time during which one of the plurality of base stations is varying its cell coverage area in order to approximately locate the at least one communication unit, another of the plurality of base stations sets its receiver system to receive communication from one or more mobile communication units registered to the one base station.
- 2. The cellular communication system of claim 1 wherein the other of the another base stations set its receiver system to receive communication from the one or more mobile communications units registered to the one base station based on a request received from a host computer coupled to the system backbone.
- 3. The cellular communication system of claim 2 wherein the cell coverage area of the one base station at least partially overlaps with the cell coverage area of the other base station.
- 4. The cellular communication system of claim 3 wherein each mobile communication unit registered to the one base station remains in substantially continuous communication with the backbone via the another base station when the one base station attempts to search for the at least one mobile communication unit.
- 5. The cellular communication system of claim 1 wherein the first antenna is a directional antenna.
- 6. The cellular communication system of claim 5 wherein the directional antenna is capable of rotating.
- 7. The cellular communication system of claim 1 wherein at least one of the plurality of base stations includes a second antenna.
- 8. The cellular communication system of claim 7 wherein the first antenna is the directional antenna and the second antenna is an omnidirectional antenna.
- 9. The cellular communication system of claim 1 further including a host computer coupled to the backbone.
- 10. The cellular communication system of claim 9 wherein the host computer has a means for estimating a velocity of the at least one mobile communication unit.
- 11. The cellular communication system of claim 9 wherein the host computer maintains a pre-stored map relating to the location of a plurality of cell coverage areas of the plurality of base stations.
- 12. A cellular communication system, comprising:
- at least two base stations, each of the at least two base stations having a communication cell coverage area, the at least two base stations being coupled to a system backbone, the at least two base stations each including a receiving system for receiving wireless communications and a transmitting system for transmitting wireless communications, each of the at least two base stations including a first antenna; and
- at least one mobile communication unit for communicating with the system backbone via at least one of the at least two base stations, the at least one mobile communication unit having a mobile communication unit transmitter for transmitting wireless communications to the at least one base station and a mobile communication unit receiver system for receiving wireless communications from the at least one base station;
- wherein, each of the at least two base stations can vary its respective cell coverage area by controlling at least one of sensitivity of the receiver system and power level of the transmitter system so that the system can determine approximately where the at least one mobile communication unit is located, the at least two base stations having cell coverage areas which overlap with each other so that the at least one mobile communication unit is substantially continuously maintained in communication with the system backbone even when one of the at least two base stations reduces its respective cell coverage area.
- 13. The cellular communication system of claim 12, wherein the cell coverage area is varied by changing the power level of the signal being transmitted by the first antenna.
- 14. The cellular communication system of claim 12, wherein the first antenna is a directional antenna.
- 15. The cellular communication system of claim 14, wherein the cell coverage area is varied by changing the respective direction of the signal being transmitted by the first antenna.
- 16. The cellular communication system of claim 15, wherein the respective direction of the signal is changed by selectively rotating the first antenna.
- 17. The cellular communication system of claim 12, wherein the first antenna is an omnidirectional antenna.
- 18. The cellular communication system of claim 12, wherein one of the at least two base stations has a second antenna.
- 19. The cellular communication system of claim 18, wherein one of the at least two base stations employs both the first antenna and the second antenna to further determine the location of the at least one mobile communication unit.
- 20. A cellular communication system, comprising:
- at least two base stations, each of the at least two base stations having a communication cell coverage area, the at least two base stations being coupled to a system backbone, the at least two base stations each including a receiving system for receiving wireless communications and a transmitting system for transmitting wireless communications, each of the at least two base stations including a first antenna; and
- at least one mobile communication unit for communicating with the system backbone via at least one of the at least two base stations, the at least one mobile communication unit having a mobile communication unit transmitter for transmitting wireless communications to the at least one base station and a mobile communication unit receiver system for receiving wireless communications from the at least one base station;
- wherein, each of the at least two base stations can vary its respective cell coverage area by controlling at least one of sensitivity of the receiver system and power level of the transmitter system so that the system can determine approximately where the at least one mobile communication unit is located, the at least two base stations having cell coverage areas which overlap with each other so that the at least one mobile communication unit is substantially continuously maintained in communication with the system backbone even when one of the at least two base stations reduces its respective cell coverage area; and
- a central processor coupled to the system backbone for maintaining location information for the at least one mobile communication unit.
- 21. The cellular communication system of claim 20, wherein at least one of the at least two base stations includes an amplifier for changing the gain of at least one of the transmitter and receiver; and
- a base station processor for controlling the transmitter and receiver, wherein the base station processor employs the amplifier to change the gain of at least one of the transmitter and receiver in order to change a cell coverage area of the base station such that an approximate location of the mobile communication unit can be determined.
- 22. The base station of claim 21, wherein the base station processor after determining that the mobile communication unit is communicating with the base station, decrements the size of the cell coverage area of the base station in order to more accurately determine the location of the mobile communication unit.
- 23. The base station of claim 21, wherein the base station processor after determining the location of the mobile communication unit with respect to the decremented cell coverage areas forwards the mobile communication unit location information to the central processor.
- 24. A method of maintaining communications between a mobile communication unit and a network within a network cellular communication system and to determine the location of the mobile communication unit within the network comprising the steps of:
- using a host computer to initiate a mobile communication unit location request to at least one base station of a plurality of base stations, the at least one base station having a cell coverage area which overlaps with the cell coverage area of at least one other base station of the plurality of base stations;
- using the host computer to instruct the at least one other base station to receive communications from the mobile communication unit in order to maintain communications between the mobile communication unit and the network;
- using the at least one base station to monitor for the mobile communication unit, wherein the at least one base station varies its cell coverage area by controlling at least one of receiving sensitivity and transmitting power in order to determine approximately the location of the mobile communication unit with respect to the at least one base station;
- using the at least one base station to send the mobile communication unit location information to the host computer; and
- using the host computer to process the mobile communication unit location information received from the at least one base station in order to determine the location of the mobile communication unit with respect to the network.
- 25. The method of claim 24, wherein the host computer determines the at least one other base station which has an at least partially overlapping cell coverage area with the at least one base station from a table.
- 26. The method of claim 24, wherein the host computer correlates the information received from the at least one base station with a pre-stored map to determine the approximate location of the mobile communication unit with respect to the network.
- 27. The method of claim 24, wherein the host computer instructs the at least one other base station to receive communications from all other mobile communication units registered to the at least one base station.
- 28. The method of claim 24, wherein the host computer requests the other base station to provide the host computer with location information related to the mobile communication unit.
- 29. A cellular communication system, comprising:
- at least two base stations, each of the at least two base stations having a communication cell coverage area, the at least two base stations being coupled to a system backbone, the at least two base stations each including a receiving system for receiving wireless communications and a transmitting system for transmitting wireless communications, each of the at least two base stations including a first antenna; and
- at least one mobile communication unit for communicating with the system backbone via at least one of the at least two base stations, the at least one mobile communication unit having a mobile communication unit transmitter for transmitting wireless communications to the at least one base station and a mobile communication unit receiver system for receiving wireless communications from the at least one base station;
- wherein, each of the at least two base stations can vary its respective cell coverage area by controlling at least one of sensitivity of the receiver system and power level of the transmitter system so that the system can determine approximately where the at least one mobile communication unit is located, the at least two base stations having cell coverage areas which overlap with each other so that the at least one mobile communication unit is at least partially maintained in communication with the system backbone even when one of the at least two base stations reduces its respective cell coverage area; and
- a host computer for receiving from the at least one base station the location information of the mobile communication unit with respect to the base station, wherein the host computer upon receiving the location information of the mobile communication unit with respect to the base station processes the information in conjunction with pre-stored map information to determine the location of the mobile communication unit within the network, the pre-stored map information including information relating to the location of the at least one base station within the network.
- 30. The cellular communication system of claim 29, wherein the pre-stored map information further includes information relating to the location of a plurality of cell coverage areas of the at least one base station.
- 31. The cellular communication system of claim 29, wherein the cell coverage area is varied by changing the power level of the signal being transmitted by the first antenna.
- 32. The cellular communication system of claim 29, wherein the first antenna is a directional antenna.
- 33. The cellular communication system of claim 32, wherein the cell coverage area is varied by changing the respective direction of the signal being transmitted by the first antenna.
- 34. The cellular communication system of claim 33, wherein the respective direction of the signal is changed by selectively rotating the first antenna.
- 35. The cellular communication system of claim 29, wherein the first antenna is an omnidirectional antenna.
- 36. The cellular communication system of claim 29, wherein the at least one base station has a second antenna.
- 37. The cellular communication system of claim 36, wherein the at least on base station employs both the first antenna and the second antenna to further determine the location of the at least one mobile communication unit.
