Claims
- 1. A support structure for a power plant, installed in a front body section of a vehicle, defined by a pair of front side frames disposed on opposite sides of the front body section, a front cross member disposed in front of the power plant and extending between the front side frames, and a rear cross member disposed rearward of the power plant and extending between the front side frames, said support structure comprising:
- a center frame extending, from front to back and in a lengthwise direction of the vehicle, between the front cross member and the rear cross member, said center frame being connected at lengthwise ends thereof to the front cross member and the rear cross member;
- front mount means, disposed in front of the power plant and secured to said center frame, for connecting the power plant to the center frame; and
- crush pattern control means, at least partly formed by a groove extending transversely in said center frame between the front cross member and the front mount means, for allowing a V-shaped deformation of the center frame between the front cross member and the front mount means so as to absorb an impact exerted thereon and suppress a rearward movement of the power plant upon a front-end collision of the vehicle.
- 2. A support structure as defined in claim 1, wherein the center frame comprises at least an upper wall and a lower wall, said crush pattern control means being formed in the upper wall of the center frame.
- 3. A support structure as defined in claim 2, wherein said crush pattern control means comprises a plurality of transversely extending grooves formed in the upper wall of the center frame and separated from each other in the lengthwise direction.
- 4. A support structure as defined in claim 1, wherein the center frame comprises a front frame portion, a rear frame portion and a transitional portion joining the front frame portion and the rear frame portion, the front frame portion, the rear frame portion and the transitional portion all having an upper wall, the upper wall of said rear frame portion being below an upper wall of said front frame portion.
- 5. A power plant support structure as defined in claim 3, wherein said crush pattern control means further comprises a plurality of transversely extending grooves formed in the lower wall and separated from each other over the length of the center frame.
- 6. A power plant support structure as defined in claim 4, wherein said crush pattern control means further comprises a plurality of transversely extending grooves formed in the upper wall of the front frame portion and the transitional portion.
- 7. A power plant support structure as defined in claim 6, wherein each of said transversely extending grooves is shaped to have a bottom angle of approximately 90 degrees.
- 8. A power plant support structure as defined in claim 1, wherein the rear cross member supports a front suspension member of the vehicle.
