Claims
- 1. An optical device having high optical precision, comprising:
a substrate having a non-optically smooth surface; a volume holographic medium conformed to said surface of said substrate; and a pattern formed in said volume holographic medium defining a first region having a first refractive index profile, and a second region having a second refractive index profile.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the optical device is apodized.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein said pattern functions as an optical device selected from phase mask, Bragg structure, planar structure, integrated optical circuit, integrated holographic optical circuit, optical waveguide, optical fiber, and a combination thereof.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 3, wherein said substrate is selected from ordinary glass, silica, plastic, quartz, polymer, epoxy, composite material, and a combination thereof.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 4, wherein the optical device is a volume hologram.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 5, wherein the volume hologram medium is actinicly susceptible.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 6, wherein conforming of the volume holographic medium is obtained by an operation selected from spinning, spraying, coating, casting, molding, electrostatic application, mechanical vibration, electro-mechanical vibration, acoustic vibration, ultrasonic vibration, heating, pressing, and a combination thereof.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 7, wherein the conformable volume holographic medium is selected from dichromated gelatin (DCG), sol-gel, plastic, polymer, epoxy, composite material, and a combination thereof.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 8, further comprising index matching material on said surface that maintains full phase modulation functionality to radiation passing through said volume holographic medium.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 9, wherein the index matching material is selected from fluid, gel, and a combination thereof.
- 11. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising index matching material on said surface that maintains full phase modulation functionality to radiation passing through said volume holographic medium.
- 12. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said pattern functions as an optical device selected from phase mask, Bragg structure, planar structure, integrated optical circuit, integrated holographic optical circuit, optical waveguide, optical fiber, and a combination thereof.
- 13. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the optical device is a volume hologram.
- 14. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the volume holographic medium is actinicly susceptible.
