Abstract
A pressurized system for dispensing carbonated beverages into an open container uses a bottom filling technique in which the outlet port of the nozzle is proximate to a bottom of the open container when dispensing is initiated. The carbonated beverage is maintained in a pressurized state within the nozzle and the remainder of the system, until immediately prior to opening a valve to dispense the carbonated beverage into the open container. Prior to opening valve, the pressure of the carbonated beverage nozzle is reduced to an appropriate dispensing pressure, preferably slightly above atmospheric pressure. The system also precisely controls the temperature of the carbonated beverage, preferably using an in-line zeroΔT chiller. In addition, specialized valve configurations and operation techniques, as well as container positioning techniques, are implemented in order to achieve a desired presentation of the carbonated beverage in the open container.
Description
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The invention relates to the automated dispensing of a carbonated beverage into open containers.
The present invention arose during ongoing efforts by the inventor to improve carbonated beverage dispensing systems. In U.S. Pat. No. 5,603,363 entitled “Apparatus For Dispensing A Carbonated Beverage With Minimal Foaming”, issuing on Feb. 18, 1997, and in U.S. Pat. No. 5,566,732 issuing on Oct. 22, 1996, both incorporated herein by reference, the inventor discloses systems for dispensing carbonated beverage, such as beer or soda, into an open container. The system disclosed in U.S. Pat. No. 5,603,363 discloses the bottom filling of carbonated beverage into an open container. U.S. Pat. No. 5,566,732 discloses the use of a bar code reader to read indicia on the open container when placed beneath the nozzle that indicates the volume of the open container in order to automate the dispensing procedure, and preferably various aspects of on site accounting and inventory procedures. In these systems, the carbonated beverage is dispensed from a nozzle that has an outlet port placed near the bottom of the open container, i.e. the open container is bottom filled. In addition to bottom filling, these systems control the dispensing pressure of the carbonated beverage as well as its temperature in order to minimize foaming. In the above incorporated U.S. patents, the dispensing pressure is controlled by maintaining the pressure of the carbonated beverage to be dispensed at atmospheric pressure. In particular, the carbonated beverage is held in a vented chamber prior to dispensing in order to maintain the pressure at or near atmospheric pressure. The carbonated beverage in the vented chamber is cooled by circulating chilled air around the chamber.
As discussed in the above incorporated patents, carbonated beverage often foams while being dispensed into the serving container using conventional tap filling dispensing systems. As a consequence, personnel operating the dispenser must fill the serving container until the level of foam reaches the brim and then wait for the foam to settle before adding additional carbonated beverage. In some instances, several iterations of this process must occur before the container is filled with liquid to the proper serving level. “Topping Off” necessitated by the foaming of the beverage prolongs the dispensing operation and impedes the ability to ftilly automate the dispensing of carbonated beverages. Nevertheless, many establishments have push button activated taps which automatically dispense measured quantities of carbonated beverage into different sized containers, such as glasses, mugs and pitchers. Normally, this automated equipment only partially fills the serving container and the user must still manually “top off” the container after the foam from the automated step settles in order to dispense the proper serving quantity.
The system disclosed in U.S. Pat. No. 5,603,363, which uses a vented chamber prior to dispensing the carbonated beverage in order to maintain the pressure in the chamber at or near atmospheric pressure, is particularly well-suited for large volume operations, such as sports arenas, stadiums or other such venues. However, in venues with lower serving volumes, carbonated beverage remaining in the vented chamber may lose some carbonation or become flat.
Also, in many applications, it is desirable to control the amount of foaming rather than simply minimize the amount of foaming. For example, when pouring beer, the presentation of the beer and the head in the open container affects the drinkability of the beer along with its serving temperature. This is also generally true of carbonated sort drinks.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The invention is a pressurized carbonated beverage dispensing system that dispenses carbonated beverage automatically in a controlled manner into an open container. The invention preferably controls the characteristics of the dispensing carbonated beverage in order to achieve or nearly achieve a desired presentation without wasting carbonated beverage.
More specifically, the invention is a system and method for dispensing carbonated beverage through a bottom filling nozzle into an open container. The carbonated beverage remains pressurized until immediately before the valve is opened and the carbonated beverage dispenses from the nozzle into the open container. In many applications, it has been found that it is desirable to maintain the carbonated beverage at a pressure substantially higher than atmospheric pressure prior to dispensing the carbonated beverage so that the beverage does not lose carbonation before serving. In other words, the carbonated beverage should be held in the system at an optimum pressure for maintaining carbonation over long periods of time. It is desirable to control the temperature of the pressurized carbonated beverage, and it is important to reduce the pressure of the carbonated beverage within the dispensing nozzle prior to dispensing the carbonated beverage from the nozzle into the open container. Once the pressure of the carbonated beverage is reduced to the optimum dispensing pressure, the dispensing valve in the nozzle is opened for a predetermined time period in order to fill the open container with the desired amount of carbonated beverage. The system preferably uses a pressure sensor to monitor the pressure of the carbonated beverage before (and during) dispensing.
Several alternatives are disclosed for reducing the pressure of the carbonated beverage contained in the nozzle prior to opening the valve. For example, inasmuch as the carbonated beverage is generally an incompressible beverage, an electronically controlled bladder, or similar mechanism, can be actuated to slightly expand the size of the volume containing the pressurized carbonated beverage in the nozzle in order to reduce the pressure in the nozzle immediately prior to opening the valve to dispense the carbonated beverage into the open container. It may be desirable to provide a flow restriction device between the source of the pressurized carbonated beverage and the nozzle in order to ensure that pressure within the nozzle does not recover before the open container is filled and the valve is closed. In some systems, it might be desirable to provide a small vent to the atmosphere in order to facilitate pressure reduction in the nozzle when the valve is open.
Normally, the pressure of the carbonated beverage in the nozzle should be able to recover to the initial pressure (which is substantially higher than atmospheric pressure) before initiating a dispensing cycle for filling a subsequent open container, although this is not necessary when the pressure is monitored by a pressure sensor. With precise knowledge of the dispensing pressure, the system accurately determines the amount of carbonated beverage dispensing into the open container by opening the valve for a pre-selected period of time.
As should be apparent to those skilled in the art, the invention is capable of efficiently dispensing carbonated beverage at a desired temperature with a desired presentation in an automated manner. In addition, the invention maintains the carbonated beverage in a pressurized state until immediately prior to dispensing the carbonated beverage, which is desirable in order to control the amount of carbonation within the beverage prior to dispensing the beverage.
The presentation of the dispensed beverage can be uniquely controlled, as described above, by controlling the temperature of the carbonated beverage, the dispensing pressure, the flow characteristics (e.g., flow rate, valve flutter, etc.) of the carbonated beverage exiting the nozzle, and the relative position of the open container relative to the nozzle outlet port when filling the open container. In accordance with the preferred embodiment of the invention, it is possible to automate each of these functions. Other features and advantages of the invention should be apparent to those skilled in the art upon inspecting the drawings and reviewing the following description thereof.

Various alternatives and other embodiments are contemplated as being within the scope of the following claims which particularly point out and distinctly claim the subject matter regarded as the invention.
Claims
- 1. A method of dispensing carbonated beverage into a open container, the method comprising the steps of:a) introducing pressurized carbonated beverage to a downwardly extending nozzle when a dispensing valve is positioned within the nozzle in a closed position to prevent dispensing of the carbonated beverage from the nozzle such that pressurized carbonated beverage is contained in the nozzle at a pressure that is substantially higher than atmospheric pressure; b) placing an open container underneath the nozzle such that an outlet port for the nozzle is proximate a bottom of the open container; c) maintaining the dispensing valve in a closed position; d) initiating a dispensing cycle; e) reducing the pressure of the carbonated beverage contained in the nozzle from a pressure that is substantially greater than atmospheric pressure lesser pressure by expanding the size of a volume containing at least the carbonated beverage in the nozzle; f) after the pressure of the carbonated beverage in the nozzle is reduced, opening the dispensing valve to dispense carbonated beverage from the nozzle into the open container; and g) closing the dispensing vale after a predetermined time period.
- 2. A method of dispensing carbonated beverage into an open container as recited in claim 1 wherein the carbonated beverage is chilled to a desired temperature prior to introducing the pressurized carbonated beverage to the downwardly extending nozzle.
- 3. A method of dispensing carbonated beverage into an open container as recited in claim 1 wherein the carbonated beverage is dispensed from the nozzle into the open container substantially at a constant pressure.
- 4. A method of dispensing carbonated beverage into an open container as recited in claim 1 further comprising the step of monitoring the pressure of the carbonated beverage contained in the nozzle using a pressure sensor.
- 5. A method of dispensing carbonated beverage into an open container as recited in claim 1 wherein the pressure at which the carbonated beverage is dispensed into the open container is less than six pounds per square inch greater than atmospheric pressure.
- 6. A method of dispensing carbonated beverage into an open container as recited in claim 1 wherein:pressurized carbonated beverage introduced to the downwardly extending nozzle flows from a source of carbonated beverage into a tank prior to being introduced to the downwardly extending nozzle; and an elastomeric bladder on the tank is actuated to slightly expand the size of the volume containing at least the carbonated beverage in the nozzle.
- 7. A method of dispensing carbonated beverage into an open container as recited in claim 6 wherein:a pressure sensor monitors pressure of the carbonated beverage within the downwardly extending nozzle; and the position of the elastomeric bladder is adjusted when the dispensing valve is open in order to maintain the pressure of the carbonated beverage within the downwardly extending nozzle at a desired dispensing pressure.
- 8. A method of dispensing carbonated beverage into an open container as recited in claim 1 wherein:a piston is located within the downwardly extending nozzle at a location above the location in which the carbonated beverage is introduced to the downwardly extending nozzle; and the piston is actuated to expand the size of the volume containing at least the carbonated beverage in the nozzle prior to opening the dispensing valve to dispense the carbonated beverage from the nozzle into the open container.
- 9. A method of dispensing carbonated beverage into an open container as recited in claim 8 wherein:a pressure sensor monitors pressure of the carbonated beverage within the downwardly extending nozzle; and the position of the piston within the downwardly extending nozzle is adjusted when the dispensing valve is open in order to maintain the pressure of the carbonated beverage within the downwardly extending nozzle at a desired dispensing pressure.
- 10. A method of dispensing carbonated beverage into an open container as recited in claim 1 wherein the carbonated beverage introduced to the downwardly extending nozzle flows from a source of carbonated beverage and through a flow restriction device before being introduced to the downwardly extending nozzle.
- 11. A method of dispensing carbonated beverage into an open container as recited in claim 10 wherein the flow restriction device is adjustable, and the method further comprises the step of adjusting the restriction of flow of carbonated beverage being introduced to the downwardly extending nozzle.
- 12. A method of dispensing carbonated beverage into an open container as recited in claim 1 further comprising the step of allowing the pressure of carbonated beverage in the nozzle to recover to the initial pressure which is substantially higher than atmospheric pressure before initiating a dispensing cycle for filling a subsequent open container.
- 13. A method of dispensing carbonated beverage into an open container as recited in claim 1 further comprising the step of maintaining the outlet port of the nozzle in a location proximate to the bottom of the open container until the outlet port is submerged.
- 14. A method of dispensing carbonated beverage into an open container as recited in claim 13 wherein the method further comprises the step of selectively positioning the open container relative to the output port of the nozzle while the carbonated beverage fills the open container in order to achieve a desired presentation of the carbonated beverage in the open container.
- 15. A method of dispensing carbonated beverage into an open container as recited in claim 14 further comprising the step of placing the open container in a container holder prior to initiating the dispensing cycle.
- 16. A method of dispensing carbonated beverage into an open container as recited in claim 14 wherein the step of selectively positioning the open container while the carbonated beverage fills the open container is accomplished by placing the open container in a container holder prior to initiating the dispensing cycle and selectively positioning the container holder to:a) place the open container underneath the nozzle such that the outlet port for the nozzle is proximate a bottom of the open container; b) maintain the outlet port of the nozzle in a location proximate to the bottom of the open container until the outlet port is submerged; and c) positioning the container holder relative to the outlet port of the nozzle in order to achieve a desired presentation of the carbonated beverage in the open container.
- 17. A method of dispensing carbonated beverage into an open container as recited in claim 16 wherein the container holder is selectively positioned in accordance with a preselected pouring profile during the time in which carbonated beverage is being dispensed into the open container.
- 18. A method of dispensing carbonated beverage into an open container as recited in claim 1 further comprising the step of selectively positioning a valve head of the dispensing valve relative to an outlet port for the nozzle when carbonated beverage is flowing from the nozzle in order to control flow characteristics of the carbonated beverage dispensing from the nozzle into the open container.
- 19. A method of dispensing carbonated beverage into an open container as recited in claim 1 wherein the dispensing cycle is initiated by actuating a switch.
- 20. A method of dispensing carbonated beverage into an open container as recited in claim 19 wherein the switch is located on a base surface of the valve exposed underneath the nozzle and the switch is activated by pressing the bottom of the open container against the switch.
- 21. A method of dispensing carbonated beverage into an open container as recited in claim 1 wherein the dispensing cycle is initiated by sensing a printed bar code on the surface of the open container.
- 22. A method of dispensing carbonated beverage into an open container as recited in claim 1 further comprising the step of adding ice to the open container after the open container is placed beneath the nozzle such that an outlet port for the nozzle is proximate a bottom of the container when the ice is being added to the open container.
- 23. A method of dispensing carbonated beverage into an open container as recited in claim 22 wherein the ice supplied to the open container is supplied through a funnel having an outlet through which the downwardly extending carbonated beverage nozzle extends such that the ice is supplied circumferentially around the nozzle into the open container.
- 24. A method of dispensing carbonated beverage into an open container as recited in claim 22 wherein ice is added into the open container before dispensing carbonated beverage into the open container.
- 25. A method of dispensing carbonated beverage into an open container as recited in claim 22 wherein ice is added to the open container contemporaneously with adding the carbonated beverage into the open container.
- 26. A method of dispensing carbonated beverage into an open container as recited in claim 22 wherein the carbonated beverage is a soft drink and the method further comprises the step of chilling the carbonated beverage introduced to the nozzle to approximately a surface temperature of ice.
- 27. A system for dispensing carbonated beverage into an open container comprising:a pressurized source of carbonated beverage; a downwardly extending nozzle having a variable volume; a pressure sensor that monitors the pressure of carbonated beverage in the nozzle and outputs a pressure signal; a valve that controls the flow of carbonated beverage dispensing from the nozzle; a valve actuator that positions the valve with respect to an outlet port of the nozzle; an activation sensor that outputs an activation signal; and an electronic controller that receives the pressure signal and the activation signal and outputs a signal to control the valve actuator; and wherein: the carbonated beverage is introduced to the downwardly extending nozzle with the valve in a closed position and the carbonated beverage at a pressure that is substantially higher than atmospheric pressure; and prior to opening the valve to dispense the carbonated beverage into the open container, the electronic controller outputs a signal which expands the variable volume of the nozzle thereby reducing the pressure of the carbonated beverage contained in the nozzle to a pressure that is appropriate for dispensing the carbonated beverage from the nozzle into the open container.
- 28. A system as recited in claim 27 further comprising a chiller for chilling the carbonated beverage flowing from the source of the carbonated beverage to the nozzle.
- 29. A system as recited in claim 28 further comprising a pressure sensor that senses the pressure of a refrigerant in the chiller and a chiller valve that can be adjusted in order to change the temperature of the refrigerant in the chiller.
- 30. A system as recited in claim 27 further comprising a flow restriction device between the pressurized source of carbonated beverage and the downwardly extending nozzle.
- 31. A system as recited in claim 28 wherein the chiller includes a heat exchanger in which an output temperature for pressurized carbonated beverage exiting from the heat exchange matches a temperature of the refrigerant within the chiller heat exchanger.
- 32. A system recited in claim 29 wherein the valve includes a valve head having a proximal end and a distal end which is exposed underneath the nozzle, the distal end of the valve head having a diameter greater than the diameter of the proximal end of the valve head, and the valve head having a distribution surface in which a first portion of the valve end distribution surface near the proximal end of the valve head sloped more steeply downward than a second portion of the distribution surface that is located closer to the distal end of the valve head.
- 33. A system as recited in claim 32 wherein the valve head includes; a base surface along the distal end of the valve head;a circumferential groove located between the base surface and the distribution surface; and an O-ring is located in the circumferential groove, the O-ring seating against the nozzle when the valve is closed.
- 34. A system as recited in claim 27 wherein the source of carbonated beverage comprises at least one keg of beer.
- 35. A system as recited in claim 27 wherein the source of carbonated beverage comprises at least one source of flavored syrup and at least one source of carbonated water.
- 36. A system as recited in claim 27 wherein the activation sensor is a sealed optical sensor that is mounted on a base surface of the valve which is exposed underneath the nozzle.
- 37. A system as recited in claim 27 wherein the activation sensor comprises a bar code reader which is adapted to sense a bar code printed on the open container.
- 38. A system as recited in claim 27 further comprising:a movable container holder that holds the open container underneath the nozzle; and a holder actuator that positions the container holder between a fully raised position and a lowered position; wherein the outlet port for the nozzle is located proximate a bottom of the open container when the container holder is holding the open container in the fully raised position and the holder actuator selectively positions the container holder underneath the nozzle as carbonated beverage dispenses from the nozzle and fills the open container.
- 39. A system as recited in claim 38 wherein the movable container holder is a generally horizontal platform.
- 40. A system as recited in claim 38 wherein the holder actuator is a pneumatic cylinder.
- 41. A system as recited in claim 38 wherein the holder actuator is a servo motor.
- 42. A system as recited in claim 38 wherein the electronic controller receives the activation signal from the activation sensor and in response thereto outputs control signals to the holder actuator and the valve actuator.
- 43. A system as recited in claim 42 wherein the electronic controller outputs control signals to the holder actuator instructing the holder actuator to selectively position the container holder in accordance with a preselected pouring profile.
- 44. A system as recited in claim 27 wherein the electronic controller outputs a control signal to the valve actuator instructing the valve actuator to selectively position the valve with respect to the outlet port of the nozzle in accordance with a preselected dispensing profile.
- 45. A system as recited in claim 27 wherein:the pressurized carbonated beverage introduced to the nozzle flows from the pressurized source of carbonated beverage into a tank prior to being introduced into the nozzle; and an elastomeric bladder is attached to the tank and actuated to slightly expand the size of the volume containing at least the carbonated beverage in the nozzle prior to dispensing the carbonated beverage through the nozzle.
- 46. A system as recited in claim 45 further comprising a bladder actuator which receives control signals from the electronic controller.
- 47. A system as recited in claim 27 further comprising:a volume expansion actuator; and further wherein the electronic controller outputs a control signal to the volume expansion actuator instructing the volume expansion actuator to retract and slightly expand the size of the volume containing at least the carbonated beverage in the nozzle prior to the opening of the valve in order to allow carbonated beverage to dispense from the nozzle into the open container at an appropriate pressure.
- 48. A system as recited in claim 47 wherein the volume expansion actuator drives a piston located within the nozzle, said piston retracting to expand the size of the volume containing carbonated beverage in the nozzle.
- 49. A system as recited in claim 27 wherein the system further dispenses ice as well as carbonated beverage into the open container, and the system further comprises a funnel having an outlet through which the downwardly extending carbonated beverage nozzle extends such that the ice is supplied circumferentially around the nozzle into the open container.
- 50. A system as recited in claim 27 wherein the electronic controller outputs a control signal to the valve actuator instructing the valve actuator to selectively position the valve with respect to the outlet port of the nozzle when the carbonated beverage is dispensing through the nozzle in order to achieve pre-selected flow characteristics.
