Claims
- 1. A cured comestible unit which can dissolve in the mouth in less than 10 seconds prepared by the method comprising:
- mixing a chopped uncured shearform matrix and an additive;
- compressing to a density of about 1.2 or less; and
- curing said compressed shearform matrix by subjecting it to conditions of heat, moisture and pressure which induce crystallization.
- 2. The unit of claim 1, wherein said shearform matrix further comprises a crystallization modifier.
- 3. The unit of claim 1, wherein said shearform matrix further comprises a binding agent.
- 4. The unit of claim 1, wherein said compressing comprises introducing the mix resulting from the mixing step to a unit dosage well and tamping said mix therein.
- 5. The unit of claim 1 wherein curing takes place in the presence of at least one additive selected from the group consisting of active ingredients, fragrances, dyes, sweeteners, crystallization modifiers, binders, lubricants, disintearants, alidants, and color additives.
- 6. The unit of claim 5, wherein said heat is increased under substantially constant moisture conditions.
- 7. The unit of claim 6, wherein said heat is increased by subjecting to microwave energy.
- 8. The unit of claim 1, wherein said additive comprises an active ingredient.
- 9. The unit of claim 8, wherein said active ingredient is selected from the group consisting of antitussives, antihistamines, decongestants, alkaloids, mineral supplements, laxatives, vitamins, antacids, ion exchange resins, anti-cholesterolemics, anti-lipid agents, antiarrhythmics, antipyretics, analgesics, appetite suppressants, expectorants, anti-anxiety agents, anti-ulcer agents, anti-inflammatory substances, coronary dilators, cerebral dilators, peripheral vasodilators, anti-infectives, psycho-tropics, antimanics, stimulants, gastrointestinal agents, sedatives, antidiarrheal preparations, anti-anginal drugs, vasodialators, anti-hypertensive drugs, vasoconstrictors, migraine treatments, antibiotics, tranquilizers, anti-psychotics, antitumor drugs, anticoagulants, antithrombotic drugs, hypnotics, anti-emetics, anti-nauseants, anti-convulsants, neuromuscular drugs, hyper- and hypoglycemic agents, thyroid and antithyroid preparations, diuretics, antispasmodics, uterine relaxants, mineral and nutritional additives, antiobesity drugs, anabolic drugs, erythropoietic drugs, antiasthmatics, cough suppressants, mucolytics, anti-uricemic drugs and mixtures thereof.
- 10. The unit of claim 8, wherein said active ingredient comprises an antacid and a pharmaceutical ingredient which is adversely affected by an acid environment.
- 11. The unit of claim 4, wherein said tamping is performed at a pressure of less than about 500 psi.
- 12. The unit of claim 11, wherein said pressure is less than about 250 psi.
- 13. The unit of claim 12, wherein said pressure is from about 20 to about 100 psi.
- 14. The unit of claim 1, which further comprises an effervescent disintegration agent.
