Claims
- 1. A process cartridge removably mountable to a main body of an image forming apparatus, said process cartridge comprising:
- a frame;
- an image bearing member;
- process means acting on said image bearing member; and
- a gripper portion for gripping the process cartridge, said gripper portion being provided on said frame at a position offset from a longitudinal center of said frame toward a side of the process cartridge that is subjected to a greater mounting resistance generated by engagement between the process cartridge and an engaging member provided on the main body, when the process cartridge is mounted onto the main body.
- 2. A process cartridge according to claim 1, wherein said image bearing member comprises a photosensitive drum and said frame includes a shutter movable between a closed position to protect said photosensitive drum and an open position retracted from the closed position, and an engagement portion, provided on one side of said process cartridge, for abutting the main body to shift said shutter to the open position, and wherein said gripper portion is provided on said frame at a position offset from a longitudinal center of said photosensitive drum toward a side of said process cartridge having said engagement portion.
- 3. A process cartridge according to claim 1, wherein said image bearing member comprises a photosensitive drum and said frame comprises a conductive member, provided on one side of said process cartridge, for grounding said photosensitive drum by abutting against the engaging member of the image forming apparatus, and said gripper portion is provided on said frame at a position offset from a longitudinal center of said photosensitive drum toward a side of said process cartridge having said conductive member.
- 4. A process cartridge according to claim 1, wherein said process means comprises developing means, said image bearing member comprises a photosensitive drum, and said gripper portion is provided on an outer surface of said frame at a side where said developing means is located, parallel to a longitudinal direction of said photosensitive drum.
- 5. A process cartridge according to claim 1, wherein said image bearing member comprises an electrophotographic photosensitive member and said process means comprises one of charger means, developing means and cleaning means, said image bearing member and said process means being integrally incorporated into said cartridge as a unit which can be removably mounted to the main body.
- 6. A process cartridge according to claim 1, wherein said image bearing member comprises an electrophotographic photosensitive member, and said process means comprises at least one of charger means, developing means and cleaning means, said image bearing member and said process means being integrally incorporated into said cartridge as a unit which can be removably mounted to the main body.
- 7. A process cartridge according to claim 1, wherein said image bearing member comprises an electrophotographic photosensitive member, and said process means comprises at least developing means, said image bearing member and said process means being integrally incorporated into said cartridge as a unit which can be removably mounted to the main body.
- 8. An image forming apparatus having a main body to which a process cartridge is removably mounted to form an image on a recording medium, said image forming apparatus comprising:
- an engaging member for abutting against the process cartridge to apply a mounting resistance to the process cartridge when the process cartridge is mounted to the main body;
- mounting means for removably mounting a process cartridge including a frame, an image bearing member, process means acting on the image bearing member, and a gripper portion for gripping the process cartridge, said gripper portion being provided on the frame at a position offset from a longitudinal center of the frame toward a side of the process cartridge that is subjected to a greater mounting resistance generated by engagement between the process cartridge and said engaging member, when the process cartridge is mounted onto the main body; and
- convey means for conveying the recording medium.
- 9. A process cartridge according to claim 1, wherein the image forming apparatus comprises an electrophotographic copying machine.
- 10. A process cartridge according to claim 1, wherein the image forming apparatus comprises a laser beam printer.
- 11. A process cartridge according to claim 1, wherein the image forming apparatus comprises a facsimile machine.
- 12. A process cartridge removably mountable to a main body of an image forming apparatus, said process cartridge comprising:
- a frame;
- an image bearing member;
- process means acting on said image bearing member;
- a shutter movable between a closed position to protect said image bearing member and an open position retracted from the closed position;
- engagement means, disposed on one side of said process cartridge, for abutting against an engaging member provided on the main body to shift said shutter to the open position when said process cartridge is mounted to the main body; and
- a gripper portion provided on said frame for gripping said process cartridge,
- wherein said gripper portion is provided on said frame at a position offset from a longitudinal center of said image bearing member toward the side of said process cartridge having said engagement means.
- 13. A process cartridge according to claim 12, wherein an engagement portion is provided on said frame at a side thereof opposite to a side where said engagement means is provided, said engagement portion abutting against the main body to open a laser shutter when said process cartridge is mounted to the main body.
- 14. A process cartridge according to claim 12, wherein a conductive member is provided on the same side of said process cartridge as the side on which said engagement means is provided, said conductive member abutting against the engaging member to ground said image bearing member, said image bearing member comprising a photosensitive drum.
- 15. A process cartridge according to claim 12, wherein said process means comprises developing means and said gripper portion is provided on an outer surface of said frame on a side of said cartridge where said developing means is provided.
- 16. A process cartridge according to claim 12, wherein said engagement means comprises a cam.
- 17. A process cartridge according to claim 12, where said image bearing member comprises an electrophotographic photosensitive member, and said process means comprises one of charger means, developing means and cleaning means, said image bearing member and said process means being integrally incorporated into said cartridge as a unit which can be removably mounted to the main body.
- 18. A process cartridge according to claim 12, wherein said image bearing member comprises an electrophotographic photosensitive member, and said process means comprises at least one of charger means, developing means and cleaning means, said image bearing member and said process means being integrally incorporated into said cartridge as a unit which can be removably mounted to the main body.
- 19. A process cartridge according to claim 12, wherein said image bearing member comprises an electrophotographic photosensitive member, and said process means comprises at least developing means, said image bearing member and said process means being integrally incorporated into said cartridge as a unit which can be removably mounted to the main body.
- 20. An image forming apparatus having a main body to which a process cartridge is removably mounted to form an image on a recording medium, said image forming apparatus comprising:
- an engaging member provided on the main body to be engageable with engagement means of the process cartridge;
- mounting means for removably mounting a process cartridge including a frame, an image bearing member, process means acting on the image bearing member, a shutter movable between a closed position to protect the image bearing member and an open position retracted from the closed position, engagement means, located at one side of the process cartridge, for abutting against said engaging member and for shifting the shutter to the open position by engaging said engaging member when the process cartridge is mounted to said image forming apparatus, and a gripper portion provided on the frame for gripping the process cartridge, the gripper portion being provided on the frame at a position offset from a longitudinal center of the image bearing member toward the side of the process cartridge having the engagement means; and
- convey means for conveying the recording medium.
- 21. An image forming apparatus according to claim 20, wherein the image forming apparatus is an electrophotographic copying machine.
- 22. An image forming apparatus according to claim 20, wherein the image forming apparatus is a laser beam printer.
- 23. An image forming apparatus according to claim 20, wherein the image forming apparatus is a facsimile machine.
- 24. A process cartridge mountable to a main body of an image forming apparatus, said cartridge comprising:
- a frame;
- an image bearing member;
- process means acting on said image bearing member; and
- a gripper provided on said frame at a location offset from a longitudinal center of said cartridge, in an axial direction of said image bearing member, toward a side of said process cartridge at which a mounting resistance when mounting said process cartridge onto the main body is greater.
- 25. A process cartridge according to claim 24, wherein said image bearing member comprises a photosensitive drum and said process cartridge further comprises a conductive member, provided on one side of said process cartridge, for grounding said photosensitive drum by engaging a plate spring provided on the main body when said process cartridge is mounted onto the main body, and wherein said gripper is offset toward a side of the process cartridge where said conductive member is provided.
- 26. A process cartridge according to claim 24, wherein said image bearing member comprises a photosensitive drum and said process cartridge further comprises a shutter for protecting said photosensitive drum and engagement means, provided at one side of said process cartridge, for shifting said shutter to an open position by contacting an engaging portion provided on the main body during mounting of said process cartridge onto the main body, and wherein said gripper is offset toward a side of the process cartridge where said engagement means is provided.
- 27. A process cartridge according to claim 24, wherein said image bearing member comprises a photosensitive drum and said process cartridge further comprises an opening portion for opening a laser shutter provided on the main body, and wherein said gripper is offset, in an axial direction of said photosensitive drum, toward a side of the process cartridge opposite to a side of said cartridge where said opening portion is provided.
- 28. A process cartridge according to claim 24, wherein said gripper is offset from an axial center of said image bearing member by about 10 mm.
- 29. A process cartridge according to claim 24, wherein said image bearing member comprises a photosensitive drum, said process means comprises charger means, cleaning means, and developing means, and said frame comprises a first frame member interconnected with a second frame member, said first frame member supporting said photosensitive drum, said charger means, and said cleaning means and said second frame member supporting said developing means and a developer containing portion for containing developer used in said developing means.
- 30. A process cartridge according to claim 29, wherein said second frame member comprises a developing frame for supporting said developing means joined to a developer containing frame for supporting said developer containing portion.
- 31. A process cartridge according to claim 24, wherein said image bearing member comprises an electrophotographic photosensitive member and said process means comprises one of charger means, developing means and cleaning means, said image bearing member and said process means being integrally incorporated into said cartridge as a unit which can be removably mounted to the main body.
- 32. A process cartridge according to claim 24, wherein said image bearing member comprises an electrophotographic photosensitive member, and said process means comprises at least one of charger means, developing means and cleaning means, said image bearing member and said process means being integrally incorporated into said cartridge as a unit which can be removably mounted to the main body.
- 33. A process cartridge according to claim 24, wherein said image bearing member comprises an electrophotographic photosensitive member, and said process means comprises at least developing means, said image bearing member and said process means being integrally incorporated into said cartridge as a unit which can be removably mounted to the main body.
- 34. An image forming apparatus having a main body to which a process cartridge is removably mounted to form an image on a recording medium, said image forming apparatus comprising:
- (a) mounting means for removably mounting a process cartridge including a frame, an image bearing member, process means acting on the image bearing member, and a gripper provided on the frame at a position offset from a longitudinal center of the process cartridge, in an axial direction of the image bearing member, toward a side of the process cartridge at which a mounting resistance for mounting the process cartridge onto the main body is greater; and
- (b) convey means for conveying the recording medium.
- 35. An image forming apparatus according to claim 32, wherein the image forming apparatus is an electrophotographic copying machine.
- 36. An image forming apparatus according to claim 32, wherein the image forming apparatus is a laser beam printer.
- 37. An image forming apparatus according to claim 32, wherein the image forming apparatus is a facsimile machine.
- 38. A method for assembling a process cartridge mountable to a main body of an image forming apparatus, comprising the step of:
- interconnecting (a) a first frame including an image bearing member and process means for acting on the image bearing member, and (b) a second frame for supporting developing means for developing a latent image formed on the image bearing member, the second frame having gripping means for gripping the process cartridge disposed at a position offset from a longitudinal center of the process cartridge, in an axial direction of the image bearing member, toward a side of the process cartridge where a mounting resistance for mounting the process cartridge onto the main body is greater, thereby assembling a process cartridge.
- 39. A method according to claim 38, wherein said process means is charger means for charging a photosensitive drum as said image bearing member.
- 40. A method according to claim 38, wherein said process means is cleaning means for cleaning a photosensitive drum as said image bearing member.
- 41. A method according to claim 38, wherein said second frame is obtained by joining a developing frame for supporting a developing roller as said developing means, and a developer containing frame for containing developer to be supplied to said developing roller.
- 42. A process cartridge according to claim 25, wherein said image bearing member comprises a photosensitive drum, said process means comprises charger means, cleaning means, and developing means, and said frame comprises a first frame member interconnected with a second frame member, said first frame member supporting said photosensitive drum, said charger means, and said cleaning means and said second frame member supporting said developing means and a developer containing portion for containing developer to be used in said developing means.
- 43. A process cartridge according to claim 42, wherein said second frame member comprises a developing frame for supporting said developing means joined to a developer containing frame for supporting said developer containing portion.
- 44. A process cartridge according to claim 26, wherein said image bearing member comprises a photosensitive drum, said process means comprises charger means, cleaning means, and developing means, and said frame comprises a first frame member interconnected with a second frame member, said first frame member supporting said photosensitive drum, said charger means, and said cleaning means and said second frame member supporting said developing means and a developer containing portion for containing developer to be used in said developing means.
- 45. A process cartridge according to claim 44, wherein said second frame member comprises a developing frame for supporting said developing means joined to a developer containing frame for supporting said developer containing portion.
- 46. A process cartridge according to claim 27, wherein said image bearing member comprises a photosensitive drum, said process means comprises charger means, cleaning means, and developing means, and said frame comprises a first frame member interconnected with a second frame member, said first frame member supporting said photosensitive drum, said charger means, and said cleaning means and said second frame member supporting said developing means and a developer containing portion for containing developer to be used in said developing means.
- 47. A process cartridge according to claim 46, wherein said second frame member comprises a developing frame for supporting said developing means joined to a developer containing frame for supporting said developer containing portion.
- 48. A process cartridge according to claim 28, wherein said image bearing member comprises a photosensitive drum, said process means comprises charger means, cleaning means, and developing means, and said frame comprises a first frame member interconnected with a second frame member, said first frame member supporting said photosensitive drum, said charger means, and said cleaning means and said second frame member supporting said developing means and a developer containing portion for containing developer to be used in said developing means.
- 49. A process cartridge according to claim 48, wherein said second frame member comprises a developing frame for supporting said developing means joined to a developer containing frame for supporting said developer containing portion.
- 50. A process cartridge removably mountable onto a main body of an image forming apparatus, said cartridge comprising:
- a frame;
- an electrophotographic photosensitive drum;
- process means for acting on said drum;
- a cartridge conductive member, disposed on one side of said cartridge, for contacting an apparatus conductive member provided on the main body when said process cartridge is mounted onto the main body, to ground said drum; and
- a gripper for gripping said process cartridge, said gripper being provided on said frame at a position offset from a longitudinal center of said frame toward a side of said cartridge where said cartridge conductive member is provided.
- 51. A process cartridge according to claim 50, further comprising a shutter for protecting said drum and engaging means, provided on the same side of said cartridge in an axial direction of said drum as said cartridge conductive member, for engaging an engaging member provided on the main body during mounting of said process cartridge onto the main body to shift said shutter from a closed position to an open position against a resilient force.
- 52. A process cartridge according to claim 50, wherein said process means comprises charging means, a resilient cleaning blade, and developing means, and wherein said frame comprises a first frame member including said drum, said charging means and said cleaning blade and a second frame member including said developing means and a developer containing portion for containing developer to be used by said developing means, said gripper being provided on said second frame member.
- 53. A process cartridge according to claim 52, wherein said gripper comprises a plurality of parallel protrusions arranged on an outer surface of said second frame member along the axial direction of said drum.
- 54. A process cartridge according to claim 50, wherein said process cartridge is mounted onto the main body in a direction intersecting the axial direction of said drum.
- 55. A process cartridge according to claim 51, wherein said process cartridge is mounted onto the main body in a direction intersecting the axial direction of said drum.
- 56. A process cartridge according to claim 52, wherein said process cartridge is mounted onto the main body in a direction intersecting the axial direction of said drum.
- 57. A process cartridge according to claim 50, wherein said cartridge conductive member is coaxial with the axial direction of said drum.
- 58. A process cartridge according to claim 50, wherein the apparatus conductive member on the main body comprises a plate spring.
- 59. A process cartridge removably mountable onto a main body of an image forming apparatus, said cartridge comprising:
- a frame;
- an electrophotographic photosensitive drum;
- process means for acting on said drum;
- a shutter shiftable between a protection position for protecting said drum and open position retracted from the protection position;
- engaging means, disposed on one side of said cartridge, for shifting said shutter from the protection position toward the open position, against a resilient force for urging the shutter toward the protection position, by engaging with an engaging member provided on the main body during mounting of said process cartridge onto the main body; and
- a gripper for gripping said process cartridge, said gripper being provided on said frame at a position offset from a longitudinal center of said cartridge, in an axial direction of said drum, toward a side of said cartridge where said engaging means is provided.
- 60. A process cartridge according to claim 59, wherein said process cartridge further comprises a cartridge conductive member, disposed at the same side of said cartridge in an axial direction as said engaging means, for contacting an apparatus conductive member provided on the main body when said process cartridge is mounted onto the main body, to ground said drum.
- 61. A process cartridge according to claim 59, wherein said process means comprises charging means, a resilient cleaning blade, and developing means, and wherein said frame comprises a first frame member including said drum, said charging means and said cleaning blade and a second frame member including said developing means and a developer containing portion for containing developer to be used by said developing means, said gripper being provided on said second frame member.
- 62. A process cartridge according to claim 61, wherein said gripper comprises a plurality of parallel protrusions arranged on an outer surface of said second frame member along the axial direction of said drum.
- 63. A process cartridge according to claim 59, wherein said process cartridge is mounted onto the main body in a direction intersecting the axial direction of said drum.
- 64. A process cartridge according to claim 60, wherein said process cartridge is mounted onto the main body in a direction intersecting the axial direction of said drum.
- 65. A process cartridge according to claim 61, wherein said process cartridge is mounted onto the main body in a direction intersecting the axial direction of said drum.
- 66. A process cartridge according to claim 60, wherein said cartridge conductive member is coaxial with the axial direction of said drum.
- 67. A process cartridge removably mountable onto a main body of an image forming apparatus, said cartridge comprising:
- a frame;
- an electrophotographic photosensitive drum;
- process means for acting on said drum;
- a cartridge conductive member, provided on one side of said cartridge, for contacting an apparatus conductive member provided on the main body when said process cartridge is mounted onto the main body, to ground said drum;
- a shutter, shiftable between a protection position for protecting said drum and an open position retracted from the protection position, for protecting said drum;
- engaging means, provided on a same side of said process cartridge in an axial direction of said drum as said cartridge conductive member, for shifting said shutter from the protection position toward the open position, against a resilient force for urging said shutter toward the protection position, by engaging an engaging member provided on the main body during mounting of said process cartridge onto the main body; and
- a gripper for gripping said process cartridge, said gripper being provided on said frame at a position offset from a longitudinal center of said process cartridge in an axial direction of said drum toward a side of said process cartridge where said engaging means is provided.
- 68. A process cartridge according to claim 67, wherein said process means comprises charging means, a resilient cleaning blade, and developing means, and wherein said frame comprises a first frame member including said drum, said charging means and said cleaning blade and a second frame member including said developing means and a developer containing portion for containing developer to be used by said developing means, said gripper being provided on said second frame member.
- 69. A process cartridge according to claim 68, wherein said gripper comprises a plurality of parallel protrusions arranged on an outer surface of said second frame member along the axial direction of said drum.
- 70. A process cartridge according to claim 67, wherein said process cartridge is mounted onto the main body in a direction intersecting the axial direction of said drum.
- 71. A process cartridge according to claim 68, wherein said process cartridge is mounted onto the main body in a direction intersecting the axial direction of said drum.
- 72. A process cartridge according to claim 69, wherein said process cartridge is mounted onto the main body in a direction intersecting the axial direction of said drum.
- 73. A process cartridge according to claim 67, wherein said cartridge conductive member is coaxial with the axial direction of said drum.
- 74. A process cartridge removably mountable onto a main body of an image forming apparatus, said cartridge comprising:
- a first frame including an electrophotographic photosensitive drum, charging means for charging said drum, and cleaning means for removing residual developer from said drum;
- a second frame rockably engaged with said first frame and including developing means for developing a latent image formed on said drum and a developer containing portion for containing developer;
- a cartridge conductive member, provided on one side of said first frame, for engaging an apparatus conductive member provided on the main body when said process cartridge is mounted onto the main body, to ground said drum;
- a shutter provided on said first frame, said shutter being shiftable between a protection position for protecting said drum and an open position retracted from the protection position;
- engaging means for shifting said shutter from the protection position toward the open position, against a resilient force for urging said shutter toward the protection position, by engaging an engaging member provided on the main body during mounting of said process cartridge onto the main body, said engaging means being provided on said first frame at a same side of said first frame, in an axial direction of said drum, as said cartridge conductive member; and
- a gripper for gripping said process cartridge, said gripper being provided on said second frame at a position offset from a longitudinal center of said process cartridge, in an axial direction of said drum, toward a side of said process cartridge where said engaging means is provided.
- 75. A process cartridge according to claim 74, wherein said gripper comprises a plurality of parallel protrusions arranged on an outer surface of said second frame along the axial direction of said drum.
- 76. A process cartridge according to claim 74, wherein said process cartridge is mounted onto the main body in a direction intersecting the axial direction of said drum.
- 77. A process cartridge according to claim 74, wherein said cartridge conductive member is coaxial with the axial direction of the drum.
- 78. A method for assembling a process cartridge removably mountable onto a main body of an image forming apparatus, said method comprising the steps of:
- providing a first frame including an electrophotographic photosensitive drum, charging means for charging the drum, cleaning means for removing residual developer from the drum, and a cartridge conductive member, provided on one side of the process cartridge, for engaging an apparatus conductive member provided on the main body when said process cartridge is mounted onto the main body, to ground the drum;
- providing a second frame including developing means for developing a latent image formed on the drum, a developer containing portion for containing developer to be used by the developing means, and a gripper for gripping the process cartridge provided at a position offset from a longitudinal center of the second frame, in an axial direction of the drum, toward a same side of the process cartridge as the side where the cartridge conductive member is provided; and
- connecting the first frame and the second frame rockably to assemble the process cartridge.
- 79. A method according to claim 78, wherein the first frame further includes a shutter shiftable between a protection position to protect the drum and an open position retracted from the protection position.
- 80. A method according to claim 79, wherein the first frame further includes engaging means for shifting the shutter from the protection position to the open position by engaging an engaging member provided on the main body during mounting of the process cartridge onto the main body, the engaging means being provided on the same side of the first frame, in an axial direction of the drum, as the cartridge conductive member.
- 81. An image forming apparatus having a main body onto which a process cartridge is removably mountable for forming an image on a recording medium, said apparatus comprising:
- mounting means for mounting a process cartridge including a frame, an electrophotographic photosensitive drum, process means for acting on the drum, a cartridge conductive member, provided on one side of the process cartridge, for contacting a main body conductive member provided on the main body when the process cartridge is mounted onto the main body, to ground the drum, and a gripper for gripping the process cartridge provided on the frame at a position offset from a longitudinal center of the process cartridge toward the side of the process cartridge where the cartridge conductive member is provided;
- a main body conductive member for contacting the cartridge conductive member of the process cartridge mounted on said mounting means; and
- conveying means for conveying the recording medium.
- 82. An image forming apparatus according to claim 81, wherein the main body conductive member has a plate-like shape and is disposed to contact the cartridge conductive member during mounting of the process cartridge onto the main body.
- 83. An image forming apparatus having a main body onto which a process cartridge is removably mountable for forming an image on a recording medium, said apparatus comprising:
- mounting means for mounting a process cartridge including a frame, an electrophotographic photosensitive drum, process means for acting on the drum, a shutter shiftable between a protection position for protecting the drum and an open position retracted from the protection position, engaging means, provided on one side of the process cartridge, for shifting the shutter from the protection position toward the open position, against a resilient force for urging the shutter toward the protection position, by engaging an engaging member provided on the main body during mounting of the process cartridge onto the main body, and a gripper for gripping the process cartridge provided on the frame at a position offset from a longitudinal center of the process cartridge in an axial direction of said drum toward the side of the process cartridge where the engaging means is provided;
- an engaging member for engaging the engaging means of the process cartridge during mounting of the process cartridge onto the main body; and
- conveying means for conveying the recording medium.
- 84. An image forming apparatus according to claim 83, wherein the engaging means comprises a cam member.
