Claims
- 1. A method for packaging food products in tubular casings, which comprises the steps of shirring a tubular film into a pleated strand at a shirring station and automatically positioning said strand on a stuffing horn at a filling station adjacent to said shirring station, completing the shirring of the film at the shirring station before positioning the shirred film at the filling station, severing and closing off the outermost terminal end of the strand to retain food product, stuffing said pleated strand with the food product at the filling station, and closing off the stuffed casing to form a packaged food product.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein the casing is shirred onto the stuffing horn at the shirring station, said method including the step of moving said stuffing horn containing the pleated strand to the filling station.
- 3. The method of claim 1 wherein the tubular film is shirred into a pleated strand independently of the stuffing horn which pleated strand is subsequently transferred to the stuffing horn at the filling station.
- 4. The method of claim 1 including the step of shirring a further tubular film into a pleated strand while the prior strand is being stuffed at the filling station.
- 5. The method of claim 1 including the step of forming the packaged food product into linked sausages.
- 6. The method of claim 1 including the step of forming tubular strands with pleats of lower density than strands formed by an apparatus having only a shirring station.
- 7. The method of claim 1 including the step of providing a supply of tubular film premoistened with sufficient moisture for both shirring and stuffing.
- 8. A method for packaging food products in tubular casings, which comprises the steps of shirring a tubular film into a first pleated strand at a shirring station and positioning at a first receiving station, severing the strand, automatically transferring said first pleated strand from the first receiving station to a second receiving station adjacent to said shirring station, closing off the outermost terminal end of the strand to retain food product, stuffing the first pleated strand with food, and closing off the opposing end of the stuffed casing to form a packaged food product at the second receiving station, said steps being coordinated so that a second pleated strand is formed and positioned at the first receiving station when the first pleated strand is transferred from the first receiving station to the second receiving station, and so on.
- 9. The method of claim 8 wherein the tubular film is premoistened with sufficient moisture for shirring and stuffing.
- 10. The method of claim 8 including the step of moisturizing the tubular film with sufficient moisture for shirring and stuffing prior to shirring.
- 11. The method of claim 8 including the step of forming the packaged food product into linked sausages.
- 12. The method of claim 8 wherein the tubular strands formed at the shirring station have pleats of lower density than strands formed by an apparatus having only a shirring station.
- 13. A method for packaging food products in tubular casings, which comprises the steps of shirring a tubular film into a pleated strand at a shirring station and positioning said strand at a first receiving station, severing the strand, transferring said strand from said first receiving station to a second receiving station, automatically positioning the strand onto a stuffing horn at a filling station adjacent to said shirring station, closing off the outermost terminal end of the strand to retain food product, stuffing said strand with the food product at the filling station, and closing off the opposing end of the stuffed casing to form a packaged food product.
- 14. The method of claim 13 wherein the steps are coordinated so that a further pleated strand is prepared and transferred to the first receiving station after the previous strand has been transferred therefrom, and so on.
- 15. The method of claim 13 including the step of forming the packaged food product into linked sausages.
- 16. The method of claim 13 wherein the flattened tubular film is premoistened with sufficient moisture for shirring and stuffing.
