Claims
- 1. A method of producing expanded thermoplastic microspheres comprising:
- (a) modifying the surface characteristics of unexpanded microspheres having a particle size within the range of from 3 to 100 .mu.m, said modifying comprising drying said unexpanded microspheres under agitation to a dry solids content exceeding 98.8% by weight to provide dried unexpanded microspheres having modified surface characteristics sufficient to avoid agglomeration of expanded microspheres;
- (b) isolating said dried unexpanded microspheres; and
- (c) heating said dried unexpanded microspheres in a step separate from the drying step in (a) to produce free-flowing, expanded thermoplastic microspheres having a content of agglomerate of less than about 1% by weight as determined by wet screening on a 100 .mu.m screen.
- 2. The method as claimed in claim 1, wherein said dried unexpanded microspheres are dried in step (a) to a dry solids content exceeding 99% by weight.
- 3. The method as claimed in claim 1, wherein said dried unexpanded microspheres are rewetted after being isolated and prior to said heating.
- 4. The method as claimed in claim 1, wherein said unexpanded microspheres of step (a) also contain a filler.
- 5. The method as claimed in claim 4, wherein said filler is talc, chalk, kaolin, dolomite or mixtures thereof.
- 6. The method as claimed in claim 1, wherein said microspheres comprise polystyrene or copolymers of styrene.
- 7. The method as claimed in claim 1, wherein said microspheres comprise copolymers of vinylidene chloride.
- 8. The method as claimed in claim 1, wherein said microspheres comprise a copolymer containing 0-80% by weight vinylidene chloride, 0-75% by weight acrylonitrile and 0-75% by weight methyl methacrylate.
- 9. The method as claimed in claim 8, wherein said microspheres comprise 0-55% by weight vinylidene chloride, 40-75% by weight acrylonitrile and 0-50% by weight methyl methacrylate.
- 10. The method as claimed in claim 1, wherein said microspheres have a particle size of 5-50 .mu.m.
- 11. The method as claimed in claim 10, wherein said agitation is applied by mechanical working means or air flow means.
- 12. A method of producing expanded thermoplastic microspheres consisting essentially of
- (a) drying unexpanded microspheres having a particle size within the range of from 3 to 100 .mu.m under agitation to a solids content exceeding 98% by weight in the substantial absence of a filler;
- (b) isolating said dried unexpanded microspheres; and
- (c) heating said dried unexpanded microspheres in a step separate from the drying (a) to produce free-flowing, expanded thermoplastic microspheres having a low content of agglomerate.
