Claims
- 1. A process for the production of a encapsulated chemical foaming concentrate comprising:
- compounding a resin carrier with a solid chemical foaming agent selected from the group consisting of an endothermic chemical foaming agent and, an exothermic chemical foaming agent and mixtures thereof under conditions where there is no substantial reduction in pressure;
- forcing said mixture of carrier and foaming agents through a die forming discrete strands of said mixture into a water chamber; and
- pelletizing said strands under water, said water being maintained in said water chamber at a pressure between 10 and 200 pounds per square inch gauge (psig) and cooled to a temperature between 40.degree. and 180.degree. F.
- 2. A process according to claim 1 which further includes:
- separating the water for recycling; and
- drying the pellets of encapsulated chemical foaming concentrate.
- 3. A process according to claim 1 wherein the pressure of the water is greater than 15 psig.
- 4. A process according to claim 1 wherein the temperature is less than 130.degree. F.
- 5. A process according to claim 1 wherein said foaming agent is an endothermic foaming agent.
- 6. A process according to claim 1 wherein said foaming agent is an exothermic foaming agent.
- 7. A process according to claim 5 wherein said endothermic foaming agent is an organic acid and an inorganic carbonate base which react to form carbon dioxide.
- 8. A process according to claim 7 wherein said acid is selected from the group consisting of malic and citric acid and said base is a bicarbonate.
- 9. A process according to claim 6 wherein said exothermic foaming agent is an azo compound which decomposes to form nitrogen.
- 10. A process according to claim 9 wherein said azo compound is selected from the group consisting of azodicarbonamide and derivatives thereof.
- 11. A process according to claim 1 wherein said foaming agent is sodium borohydride.
- 12. A process according to claim 1 wherein said foaming agent is a hydrazide compound selected from the group consisting of p-toluene sulfonyl hydrazide and p,p-oxybis benzene sulfonyl hydrazide.
- 13. A process according to claim 1 wherein said chemical foaming agent is a mixture of endothermic foaming agent and exothermic foaming agent.
- 14. A process according to claim 13 wherein the endothermic and exothermic foaming agents are in the relative amounts of 10/90 to 90/10 wt %.
- 15. A process according to claim 1 wherein said foaming agent is pretreated with glycerol tristearate.
- 16. A process according to claim 7 wherein each of the acids and bases is pretreated with glycerol tristearate.
- 17. A process according to claim 1 which further includes compounding calcium oxide with said resin carrier and said solid chemical foaming agent.
