Claims
- 1. Process for the preparation of substantially linear, highly crystalline polyethylene homopolymer and ethylene/higher olefin copolymer which has a molecular weight of greater than 1,000,000 and which can be compression molded or extruded at a temperature below its melting point, said process comprising contacting ethylene or a mixture of ethylene and not more than 2 mole % of higher olefin, based on the moles of ethylene and higher olefin, and a suitable polymerization catalyst comprising an Al.sup.+3 /V.sup.+3 homogeneous catalyst system wherein the concentration of V.sup.+3 is 0.00002-0.00004 M and the polymerization reaction is -40.degree. C. to 20.degree. C., at a pressure no greater than 15 psig, under polymerizing conditions such that the surface temperature of the formed polymer does not exceed 90.degree. C. and such that the surface of the formed polymer does not substantially dissolve in the polymerization reaction mixture, and thereafter recovering the formed polymer below its melting point without dissolution thereof in a solvent.
