Claims
- 1. An attachment assembly for attaching an object to a panel of a vehicle comprising:
a base assembly fixable to the object, the base assembly including a shaft member extending therefrom; and a retaining mechanism insertable through an aperture in the panel, the retaining mechanism comprising:
an expandable member comprising a plurality of resilient, outwardly expandable fingers compressible to pass through the aperture in the panel, a retaining member disposed on the shaft member to bias the expandable member toward the panel, and a spacer member disposed on the shaft member to space the expandable member a selected distance from the object.
- 2. The attachment assembly of claim 1, wherein the expandable member comprises a retaining cap disposed for axial movement on the shaft member.
- 3. The attachment assembly of claim 1, wherein the fingers of the expandable member comprise an upper section and a lower section joined by an intermediate section, the intermediate section angled such that the lower sections of any two opposing retaining fingers are spaced farther apart than the upper sections of said opposing fingers.
- 4. The attachment assembly of claim 1, wherein the expandable member comprises an annular portion, the fingers upstanding from the annular portion.
- 5. The attachment assembly of claim 1, wherein the shaft member comprises a stud having a tapered body section, the fingers in contact with the tapered body section.
- 6. The attachment assembly of claim 5, wherein the stud further includes at least one boss outwardly extending from the tapered body section and positioned between any two adjacent fingers of the expandable member.
- 7. The attachment assembly of claim 1, wherein the spacer member comprises a snap collar disposed about the shaft member, the snap collar having at least one resilient leg positioned adjacent the base assembly.
- 8. The attachment assembly of claim 7, wherein the snap collar comprises a split ring portion having a pair of opposed resilient legs extending therefrom, the legs comprising a straight section and a cantilevered section, an edge of the cantilevered section positioned adjacent the base assembly.
- 9. The attachment assembly of claim 8, wherein the legs further include a tab extending from the cantilevered section, the tab positioned within the aperture.
- 10. The attachment assembly of claim 1, wherein the retaining member comprises a nut threadably disposed on the shaft member.
- 11. The attachment assembly of claim 1, wherein the retaining member comprises means for effecting axial movement of the expandable member toward the panel.
- 12. The attachment assembly of claim 1, wherein the retaining member comprises a threaded member attached to the shaft member and a nut threadably disposed on the threaded member, wherein upon application of torque to the nut, the expandable member moves toward the panel.
- 13. The attachment assembly of claim 1, further comprising a gasket member disposed against the base assembly.
- 14. A quick-attachment mounting mechanism for use in securing an object to a panel, comprising:
a base having a stud extending therefrom; said stud having a tapered body section; a retaining cap disposed on said stud for axial movement relative thereto; said retaining cap comprising a plurality of retaining fingers in contact with the tapered body section of said stud, wherein upon axial movement of said retaining cap toward said base, the retaining fingers radially outwardly expand.
- 15. The mechanism of claim 14, further comprising a snap collar disposed about said stud, said snap collar having at least one resilient leg positioned adjacent said base.
- 16. The mechanism of claim 15, wherein said snap collar comprises a snap ring portion having a pair of resilient legs extending therefrom, said legs being spaced 180° apart, each said resilient leg being disposed in a respective notch in said tapered body section and aligned with a longitudinal axis of said stud.
- 17. The mechanism of claim 14, further comprising a spacer member disposed about said stud between said retaining cap and said base and sized to prevent entry of said retaining fingers of said retaining cap into an aperture in the panel.
- 18. The mechanism of claim 17, wherein said spacer member comprises a snap collar having at least one resilient leg positioned adjacent said base.
- 19. The mechanism of claim 14, further comprising means for effecting axial movement of said retaining cap toward said base.
- 20. The mechanism of claim 19, wherein said means for effecting axial movement of said retaining cap comprises a threaded member attached to said stud and a nut, wherein upon application of torque to said nut, said retaining cap moves toward said base.
- 21. The mechanism of claim 14, wherein said stud is provided with a longitudinal notch aligned with a through hole in the base.
- 22. The mechanism of claim 21, further comprising a snap collar disposed about said stud, said snap collar having at least one resilient leg positioned adjacent said base and wherein the snap collar is provided with a notched section that aligns with the longitudinal notch in the stud.
- 23. The mechanism of claim 14, wherein said stud is provided with at least one boss outwardly extending from said tapered body, said boss being positioned between any two adjacent retaining fingers of said retaining cap.
- 24. The mechanism of claim 14, wherein said retaining fingers comprise an upper section and a lower section joined together by an intermediate section, said intermediate section being angled such that the lower sections of any two opposing retaining fingers are spaced farther apart than the upper sections of said opposing fingers.
- 25. The mechanism of claim 14, further comprising a gasket positioned against a surface of said base from which the stud extends.
- 26. The mechanism of claim 14, wherein the stud is formed integral with the base.
- 27. The mechanism of claim 14, wherein the base is fixable to a lower surface of the object.
- 28. A process of mounting an object to a panel, comprising the steps of:
attaching an object to a quick-attachment mounting mechanism, said quick attachment mounting mechanism comprising: a base having a stud extending therefrom, said stud having a tapered body section; and a retaining cap disposed on said stud for axial movement relative thereto, said retaining cap comprising a plurality of retaining fingers in contact with the tapered body section of said stud, wherein upon axial movement of said retaining cap toward said base, the retaining fingers radially outwardly expand; inserting the stud through an aperture in a panel and positioning the base against an exterior surface of the panel; and effecting axial movement of said retaining cap to clamp the panel between said plurality of retaining fingers and said base.
- 29. The process of claim 28, wherein the quick-attachment mounting mechanism further comprises a snap collar disposed about said stud, said snap collar having at least one resilient leg positioned adjacent said base, wherein upon insertion of said stud through said aperture, said resilient leg moves toward said stud and then returns to its neutral position to prevent the base from moving away from the panel.
- 30. The process of claim 29, wherein said snap collar comprises a snap ring portion having a pair of resilient legs extending therefrom, said legs being spaced 180° apart, each said resilient leg being disposed in a respective notch in said tapered body section and aligned with a longitudinal axis of said stud.
- 31. The process of claim 28, wherein said quick-attachment mounting mechanism further comprises means for effecting axial movement of said retaining cap toward said base.
- 32. The process of claim 31, wherein said means for effecting axial movement of said retaining cap comprises a threaded member attached to said stud and a nut, and wherein step c) comprises applying torque to said nut to effect axial movement of said retaining cap toward said base until a pre-determined amount of clamping force is applied.
- 33. The process of claim 28, wherein said stud is provided with a longitudinal notch aligned with a through hole in the base.
- 34. The process of claim 28, wherein the stud of said quick-attachment mounting mechanism is provided with at least one boss outwardly extending from said tapered body section, said boss being positioned between any two adjacent retaining fingers of said retaining cap.
- 35. The process of claim 28, wherein said retaining fingers comprise an upper section and a lower section joined together by an intermediate section, said intermediate section being angled such that the lower sections of any two opposing retaining fingers are spaced farther apart than the upper sections of said opposing fingers.
- 36. The process of claim 28, further comprising the step of positioning a gasket between the base and the panel prior to insertion of the stud in the panel aperture.
- 37. A quick-attaching object for attachment to a vehicle through an aperture in an exterior panel of the vehicle, comprising:
an object to be attached to the exterior panel of the vehicle, the object including a lower surface disposed to be supported on the exterior surface of the exterior panel; and an attachment assembly attached to the lower surface of the object, comprising:
a base assembly fixed to the object, the base assembly including a shaft member extending therefrom; and a retaining mechanism insertable through the aperture in the panel, the retaining mechanism comprising:
an expandable member comprising a plurality of resilient, outwardly expandable fingers compressible to pass through the aperture in the panel, a retaining member disposed on the shaft member to bias the expandable member toward the panel, and a spacer member disposed on the shaft member to space the expandable member a selected distance from the object.
- 38. The quick-attaching assembly of claim 37, wherein the expandable member comprises a retaining cap disposed for axial movement on the shaft member.
- 39. The quick-attaching object of claim 37, wherein the fingers of the expandable member comprise an upper section and a lower section joined by an intermediate section, the intermediate section angled such that the lower sections of any two opposing retaining fingers are spaced farther apart than the upper sections of said opposing fingers.
- 40. The quick-attaching object of claim 37, wherein the expandable member comprises an annular portion, the fingers upstanding from the annular portion.
- 41. The quick-attaching object of claim 37, wherein the shaft member comprises a stud having a tapered body section, the fingers in contact with the tapered body section.
- 42. The quick-attaching object of claim 41, wherein the stud further includes at least one boss outwardly extending from the tapered body section and positioned between any two adjacent fingers of the expandable member.
- 43. The quick-attaching object of claim 37, wherein the spacer member comprises a snap collar disposed about the shaft member, the snap collar having at least one resilient leg position adjacent the base assembly.
- 44. The quick-attaching object of claim 43, wherein the snap collar comprises a split ring portion having a pair of opposed resilient legs extending therefrom, the legs comprising a straight section and a cantilevered section, an edge of the cantilevered section positioned adjacent the base assembly.
- 45. The quick-attaching object of claim 37, wherein the legs further include a tab extending from the cantilevered section, the tab positioned within the aperture.
- 46. The quick-attaching object of claim 37 wherein the retaining member comprises a nut threadably disposed on the shaft member.
- 47. The quick-attaching object of claim 37, wherein the retaining member comprises means for effecting axial movement of the expandable member toward the panel.
- 48. The quick-attaching object of claim 37, wherein the retaining member comprises a threaded member attached to the shaft member and a nut threadably disposed on the threaded member, wherein upon application of torque to the nut, the expandable member moves toward the panel.
- 49. The quick-attaching object of claim 37, further comprising a gasket member disposed against the base assembly.
