Claims
- 1. A photographic element comprising a substrate having coated thereon a radiation-polymerizable composition, and a transparent, continuous oxygen barrier disposed on said composition, the radiation-polymerizable composition comprising in admixture
- (a) a binder resin having the general formula
- --A--B--C--
- wherein a plurality of each of components A, B and C occur in ordered or random sequence in the resin and wherein A is present in said resin at about 5% to about 20% by weight and comprises groups of the formula ##STR14## B is present in said resin at about 4% to about 30% by weight and comprises groups of the formula ##STR15## and C is present in said resin at about 50% to about 91% by weight and comprises acetal groups consisting of groups of the formulae ##STR16## where R is lower alkyl or hydrogen, and wherein said group I is present in component C from about 75% to about 85%, group II is present in component C from about 3% to about 5%; and group III is present in component C from about 10% to about 22%;
- (b) a photoinitiator; and
- (c) a photopolymerizable mixture of
- (i) an acrylic monomer having two or more unsaturated groups; and
- (ii) an oligomer which is prepared by reacting one molar equivalent of a substantially linear polymeric compound having an active hydrogen group at each end thereof with a least two molar equivalents of a diisocyanate so as to form a prepolymer having an isocyanate group at each end thereof; and subsequently reacting said prepolymer with at least two equivalents of an ethylenically unsaturated compound having an active hydrogen group to provide said prepolymer with unsaturation at each end thereof.
- 2. The photographic element of claim 1 wherein said substrate is selected from the group consisting of aluminum and its alloys, polyester and silicon.
- 3. The photographic element of claim 2 wherein said substrate comprises aluminum and its alloys.
- 4. The photographic element of claim 3 wherein said monomer is an ethylenically unsaturated compound having from 3 to 6 unsaturated groups and being capable of reacting with said oligomer.
- 5. The photographic element of claim 4 said monomer is further characterized as having the unsaturated groups being acrylate or methacrylate esters.
- 6. The photographic element of claim 5 wherein said monomer is dipentaerythritol monohydroxy pentaacrylate.
- 7. The photographic element of claim 1 wherein said oligomer is a diacrylated polyurethane.
- 8. The photographic element of claim 1 wherein said photoinitiator comprises a triazine composition.
- 9. A photographic element comprising an aluminum containing substrate upon which is coated a composition comprising in admixture
- (a) a binder resin having the general formula
- --A--B--C--
- wherein a plurality of each of components A, B and C occur in ordered or random sequence in the resin and wherein A is present in said resin at about 5% to about 30% by weight and comprises groups of the formula ##STR17## B is present in said resin at about 4% to about 30% by weight and comprises groups of the formula ##STR18## and C is present in said resin at about 50% to about 1% by weight and comprises acetal groups consisting of groups of the formulae ##STR19## where R is lower alkyl or hydrogen, and wherein said group I is present in component C from about 75% to about 85%, group II is present in component C from about 3% to about 5%; and group III is present in component C from about 10% to about 22%;
- (b) 2-stilbenyl-4,6-di(trichloromethyl)triazine;
- (c) a photopolymerizable mixture of
- (i) dipentaerythritol monohydroxy pentacrylate; and
- (ii) a diacrylated urethane oligomer which is prepared by reacting one molar equivalent of a substantially linear polymeric compound having an active hydrogen group at each end thereof with a least two molar equivalents of a diisocyanate compound so as to form a prepolymer having an isocyanate group at each end thereof; and subsequently reacting said prepolymer with at least two equivalents of an ethylenically unsaturated compound having an active hydrogen group to provide said prepolymer with unsaturation at each end thereof; and
- a transparent, continuous, oxygen barrier film disposed on said composition.
- 10. A process for the production of a photographic element comprising combining in admixture
- (a) a binder resin having the general formula
- --A--B--C--
- wherein a plurality of each of components A, B and C occur in ordered or random sequence in the resin and wherein A is present in said resin at about 5% to about 20% by weight and comprises groups of the formula ##STR20## B is present in said resin at about 4% to about 30% by weight and comprises groups of the formula ##STR21## and C is present in said resin at about 50% to about 91% by weight and comprises acetal groups consisting of groups of the formulae ##STR22## where R is lower alkyl or hydrogen, and wherein said group I is present in component C from about 75% to about 85%, group II is present in component C from about 3% to about 5%; and group III is present in component C from about 10% to about 22%;
- (b) a photoinitiator;
- (c) a photopolymerizable mixture of
- (i) an acrylic monomer having two or more unsaturated groups; and
- (ii) an oligomer which is prepared by reacting one molar equivalent of a substantially linear polymeric compound having an active hydrogen group at each end thereof with a least two molar equivalents of a diisocyanate compound so as to form a prepolymer having an isocyanate group at each end thereof; and subsequently reacting said prepolymer with at least two equivalents of an ethylenically unsaturated compound having an active hydrogen group to provide said prepolymer with unsaturation at each end thereof; and
- coating said mixture on a suitable substrate and disposing a transparent, continuous oxygen barrier film on said composition.
- 11. The process of claim 10 wherein said substrate is selected from the group consisting of aluminum and its alloys, polyester and silicon.
- 12. The process of claim 11 wherein said substrate comprises aluminum and its alloys.
- 13. A process for using a photographic element comprising combining in admixture
- (a) a binder resin having the general formula
- --A--B--C--
- wherein a plurality of each of components A, B and C occur in ordered or random sequence in the resin and wherein A is present in said resin at about 5% to about 20% by weight and comprises groups of the formula ##STR23## B is present in said resin at about 4% to about 30% by weight and comprises groups of the formula ##STR24## and C is present in said resin at about 50% to about 91% by weight and comprises acetal groups consisting of groups of the formulae ##STR25## where R is lower alkyl or hydrogen, and wherein said group I is present in component C from about 75% to about 85%, group II is present in component C from about 3% to about 5%; and group III is present in component C from about 10% to about 22%;
- (b) a photoinitiator; and
- (c) a photopolymerizable mixture of
- (i) an acrylic monomer having two or more unsaturated groups; and
- (ii) an oligomer which is prepared by reacting one molar equivalent of a substantially linear polymeric compound having an active hydrogen group at each end thereof with a least two molar equivalents of a diisocyanate compound so as to form a prepolymer having an isocyanate group at each end thereof; and subsequently reacting said prepolymer with at least two equivalents of an ethylenically unsaturated compound having an active hydrogen group to provide said prepolymer with unsaturation at each end thereof;
- the process further comprising coating the composition formed by the mixture of a, b, and c on a suitable substrate; then disposing a transparent, continuous oxygen barrier film on said composition to form a photographic element; imagewise exposing said element to actinic light and developing said element with a suitable aqueous developer.
- 14. The process of claim 13 said developer comprises 2-propoxyethanol.
- 15. The element of claim wherein R is ethyl.
- 16. The process of claim wherein R is ethyl.
- 17. The process of claim wherein R is ethyl.
- 18. The element of claim 2 wherein said oxygen barrier film comprises one or more ingredients selected from the group consisting of polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinyl alcohol/polyvinyl acetate copolymer, polyvinyl pyrrolidone, polyvinyl pyrrolidone/polyvinyl acetate copolymer, polyacrylic acid, poly(butadiene-maleic acid), polyvinyl methyl ether and polybutyl acrylic acid.
- 19. The process of claim 10 said oxygen barrier film comprises one or more ingredients selected from the group consisting of polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinyl alcohol/polyvinyl acetate copolymer, polyvinyl pyrrolidone, polyvinyl pyrrolidone/polyvinyl acetate copolymer, polyacrylic acid, poly(butadiene-maleic acid), polyvinyl methyl ether and polybutyl acrylic acid.
- 20. The process of claim 13 wherein said oxygen barrier film comprises one or more ingredients selected from the group consisting of polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinyl alcohol/polyvinyl acetate copolymer, polyvinyl pyrrolidone, polyvinyl pyrrolidone/polyvinyl acetate copolymer, polyacrylic acid, poly(butadiene-maleic acid), polyvinyl methyl ether and polybutyl acrylic acid.
