Claims
- 1. A system for detecting the presence of factors related to transmissible spongiform encephalopathies in the central nervous system tissue of an animal, the system comprising:
a) a light source; b) said light source emitting light onto the central nervous system tissue of an animal; c) said emitted light having a wavelength effective to elicit fluorescence from the factors related to transmissible spongeiform encephalopathies in the central nervous system tissue of an animal said fluorescence at a wavelength between about 400 to 900 nm; d) a light detection device; e) said light detection device being positioned so as to detect fluorescence light emissions from the central nervous system tissue of an animal; and f) said light detection device detecting fluorescent light emissins having a wavelength between about 400 to 900 nm from the central nervous system tissue of an animal.
- 2. The system of claim 1, wherein:
a) said light source is filtered such that it emits light at a wavelength between about 300 to 550 nm.
- 3. The system of claim 2 where said light source includes a laser, an array of LEDs, or Arc lamps.
- 4. The system of claim 1, wherein said light detection device includes a photodetector or a CCD.
- 5. The system of claim 4 where said photodetector comprises photodiode detectors, photomultipliers, amplifiers, image intensifiers, CCD cameras, photocathodes, or microchannel plates.
- 6. The system of claim 1 further comprising:
a) a light filter; b) said light filter being positioned between said light detection device and the central nervous system tissue of an animal; and c) said filter substantially filtering out light other than light at a wavelength between about 400 to 900 nm.
- 7. The system of claim 1 further comprising a viewing lens or display screen in communication with said light detection device.
- 8. The system of claim 1 further comprising a means for modulating the emmitance of light from said light source.
- 9. The system of claim 8, further comprising:
a) a means for presenting said central nervous system tissue of an animal to the system; and b) wherein said means for modulating prevents said light source from emitting light unless said means for presenting has presented the central nervous system tissue of an animal.
- 10. A method for detecting the presence of factors related to transmissible spongiform encephalopathies in the central nervous system tissue of an animal comprising the steps of:
a) illuminating the central nervous system tissue of an animal with light having a wavelength effective to elicit fluorescence from the factors related to transmissible spongeiform encephalopathies said fluorescence at a wavelength between 400 to 900 nm; and b) detecting fluorescent light emission from the central nervous system tissue of an animal at a wavelength between about 400 to 900 nm, wherein detection of fluorescent light emission at said wavelength between about 400 to 900 nm is an indication of the presence of factors related to transmissible spongiform encephalopathies in the central nervous system tissue of an animal.
- 11. The method of claim 10, wherein said illuminating light is at a wavelength between about 300 to 550 nm.
- 12. A system for detecting the presence of factors related to transmissible spongiform encephalopathies in the central nervous system tissue in the eye of a live animal, the system comprising:
a) a light source; b) said light source emitting light into the eye of a live animal; c) said emitted light having a wavelength effective to elicit fluorescence from the factors related to transmissible spongiform encephalopathies in the central nervous system tissue in the eye of a live animal said fluorescence at a wavelength between about 400 to 900 nm; d) a light detection device; e) said light detection device being positioned so as to detect fluorescence light emissions from the central nervous system tissue in the eye of a live animal; and f) said light detection device detecting fluorescent light emissions having a wavelength between about 400 to 900 nm from the central nervous system tissue in the eye of a live animal.
- 13. The system of claim 12, wherein:
a) said light source is filtered such that it emits light at a wavelength between about 300 to 550 nm.
- 14. The system of claim 12 where said light source includes a laser, an array of LEDs, or Arc lamps.
- 15. The system of claim 12, wherein said light detection device includes a photodetector or a CCD.
- 16. The system of claim 15 where said photodetector comprises photodiode detectors, photomultipliers, amplifiers, image intensifiers, CCD cameras, photocathodes, or microchannel plates.
- 17. The system of claim 12 further comprising;
a) light filter; b) said light filter being positioned between said light detection device and the eye of a live animal; c) said filter substantially filtering out light other than light at a wavelength between about 400 to 900 nm.
- 18. The system of claim 12 further comprising a viewing lens or display screen in communication with said detector.
- 19. The system of claim 14 further comprising a means for detecting the presence of the eye of a live animal to be examined.
- 20. A method for detecting the presence of factors related to transmissible spongiform encephalopathies in an eye of a live animal using a system comprising the steps of:
a) illuminating the eye of a live animal with light having a wavelength effective to elicit fluorescence from the factors related to transmissible spongeiform encephalopathies said fluorescence at a wavelength between 400 to 900 nm; and b) detecting fluorescent light emission from the central nervous system tissue of the eye of a live animal at a wavelength between about 400 to 900 nm, wherein detection of fluorescent light emission at said wavelength between about 400 to 900 nm is an indication of the presence of factors related to transmissible spongiform encephalopathies in the central nervous system tissue of an animal.
- 21. The method of claim 20, wherein said illuminating light is at a wavelength between about 300 to 500 nm.
