- 10. The exterior finishing panel of claim 9 wherein said polymer matrix composite is disposed on said inwardly-facing surface of said elongated thermoplastic sheet.
- 11. The exterior finishing panel of claim 1 wherein said rigid support member comprises a relatively rigid elongated member coextruded along a portion of the length of said thermoplastic sheet, said elongated member comprising a rigid polyvinyl chloride composition.
- 12. The exterior finishing panel of claim 1, wherein said elongated thermoplastic sheet comprises a plurality of rectangular sheathing sections having lateral marginal flanges.
- 13. A panel in accordance with claim 1 wherein said strip of high strength material is located on one of the connector portions.
- 14. A panel in accordance with claim 1 wherein said strip of high strength material is located on an inner surface of one of the connector portions.
- 15. An exterior finishing panel, comprising:
- an elongated thermoplastic sheet comprising a first outwardly-facing surface and a second inwardly-facing surface; and
- an elongated reinforcing member bonded along said exterior finishing panel, said thermoplastic sheet and elongated reinforcing member capable of being cut by a saw blade;
- said elongated reinforcing member having a flexural modulus substantially greater than the flexural modulus of said thermoplastic sheet.
- 16. The exterior finishing panel of claim 15 wherein said elongated reinforcing member comprises a strip of thermoplastic material.
- 17. The exterior finishing panel of claim 16 wherein said strip of thermoplastic material is coextruded with, or molded to, said exterior finishing panel.
- 18. An elongated thermoplastic sheet including hook-and-groove fastening means for permitting said siding panel to be joined in overlapping fashion to an adjoining panel; and
- a rigid strip of thermoplastic material bonded along said elongated thermoplastic sheet by a melt bond, said rigid strip and said elongated thermoplastic sheet being capable of being cut by a saw blade.
- 19. The exterior finishing panel of claim 18 wherein said rigid strip comprises a flexural modulus substantially greater than the flexural modulus of said thermoplastic sheet.
- 20. The exterior finishing panel of claim 19 wherein said rigid strip comprises polyvinyl chloride resin.
- 21. The exterior finishing panel of claim 18 wherein said rigid strip is coextruded proximately to said hook-and-groove fastening means.
- 22. A method of installing exterior siding panels, comprising:
- providing a series of elongated, thermoplastic sheets of exterior siding material, each sheet including an outwardly-facing surface having an aesthetic appearance, and an inwardly-facing surface; and
- a reinforcing member of sufficient length to support at least a first of said thermoplastic sheets, said reinforcing member having a significantly greater flexural modulus than said thermoplastic sheets;
- fastening a first of said thermoplastic sheets to an exterior surface of a building structure;
- fastening a second of said thermoplastic sheets to an exterior surface of said building structure; and
- whereby said reinforcing member permits at least said first thermoplastic sheet to float across a plurality of irregularities on said exterior surface.
- 23. The method of claim 22 wherein each of said series of elongated, thermoplastic sheets of exterior siding material comprise a reinforcing member melt bonded to an inwardly-facing surface thereof.
- 24. The method of claim 23 wherein said reinforcing members comprise a rigid thermoplastic composition.
- 25. The method of claim 24 wherein said rigid thermoplastic composition comprises polyvinyl chloride.
- 26. The method of claim 24 wherein each of said reinforcing members comprises a thermoplastic resin and a reinforcement for improving stiffness.
- 27. The method of claim 22 wherein said exterior surface of said building structure is not flat.
- 28. The method of claim 22 wherein said second of said thermoplastic sheets comprises a reinforcing member disposed along a portion of its length.
- 29. The method of claim 22 wherein said reinforcing member comprises a flexural modulus of at least 50% greater than the flexural modulus of said thermoplastic sheets.
