Claims
- 1. A disk drive comprising:
- a housing;
- a door pivotally mounted to said housing and movable between an opened position and a closed position;
- means adapted for receiving in a receiving plane a removable cartridge containing a disk assembly for storing data;
- motor means adapted for operably engaging and causing the disk assembly to spin at an appropriate speed;
- means for movable mounting the motor means to the housing so that the motor means is moveable from a first position out of engagement with the disk assembly to a second position operably engaged with the disk assembly;
- ejecting means for engaging and lockingly holding the cartridge in place in the receiving means and for ejecting the cartridge from the receiving means;
- means for enabling and disabling the motor means;
- interlocking means for ensuring that the cartridge can not be removed from the receiving means while motor means is enabled and for ensuring that the motor means can not be enabled if the cartridge is not received in the receiving means;
- wherein the ejecting means, the enabling and disabling means and the interlocking means substantially encircle the motor means;
- wherein the interlocking means includes an interlock bar and the means for movable mounting the motor means includes a linkage arrangement that connects to the door such that movement of the door moves the motor; and
- wherein the interlock bar can selectively block the linkage arrangement, thereby blocking movement of said door.
- 2. A disk drive and removable cartridge system, the disk drive for receiving along a direction of insertion the removable cartridge for storing data, said disk drive and removable cartridge system comprising:
- the removable cartridge including:
- (a) a cartridge housing;
- (b) a data storage disk;
- (c) means for mounting the data storage disk in the cartridge housing;
- (d) the cartridge housing having a planar surface that is substantially parallel to the disk;
- said disk drive including:
- (a) a housing;
- (b) a door;
- (c) means for mounting said door to said housing so that said door can be moved to an open position so that the cartridge can be received in said disk drive;
- (d) means for receiving the removable cartridge;
- (e) motor means for engaging the removable cartridge in order to cause the disk to spin;
- (f) means for movably mounting the motor means to the housing so that the motor means is movable from a first position out of engagement with the cartridge to a second position operably engaged with the cartridge;
- (g) means for engaging and holding the removable cartridge in place in the receiving means;
- (h) said means for engaging and holding said removable cartridge for acting across the direction of insertion of the removable cartridge into the disk drive and for acting along the planar surface of the cartridge housing in order to engage and lockingly hold the removable cartridge in place in the receiving means;
- (i) means for operably linking said door with said means for movably mounting said motor means and said cartridge engaging and holding means so that the movement of said door operates both the movable mounting means and said cartridge engaging and holding means.
- 3. The disk drive and removable cartridge system of claim 2 wherein:
- said means for receiving in a receiving plane the removable cartridge, can receive the removable cartridge containing the disk for storing at least 40 megabytes of data, which disk has a diameter of approximately about 2.5 inches to approximately about 1.8 inches.
- 4. A disk drive adapted for receiving along a direction of insertion a removable cartridge with a disk for storing data, the cartridge housing a cartridge housing for containing the disk, the cartridge housing having a planar surface that is substantially parallel to the disk, said disk drive comprising:
- a housing;
- a door;
- means for mounting said door to said housing so that said door can be moved to an open position so that a cartridge can be received in said disk drive;
- means adapted for receiving a removable cartridge;
- motor means adapted for engaging a removable cartridge in order to cause a disk to spin;
- means for movably mounting the motor means to the housing so that the motor means is movable from a first position out of engagement with a cartridge to a second position operably engaged with a cartridge;
- means for ejecting a removable cartridge from the receiving means, said ejecting means for acting across the direction of insertion of a removable cartridge into the disk drive and for acting along the planar surface of the cartridge housing in order to eject the removable cartridge;
- means for operably linking said door with said means for movably mounting said motor means and said cartridge ejecting means so that the movement of said door operates both the movable mounting means and said cartridge ejecting means.
- 5. The disk drive of claim 4 wherein:
- said means adapted for receiving in a receiving plane a removable cartridge, can receive a removable cartridge containing a disk assembly including a hub and a disk for storing at least 40 megabytes of data, which disk assembly has a disk with a diameter of approximately about 2.5 inches to approximately about 1.8 inches.
- 6. A disk drive adapted for receiving along a direction of insertion a removable cartridge with a disk for storing data, the cartridge housing a cartridge housing for containing the disk, the cartridge housing having a planar surface that is substantially parallel to the disk, said disk drive comprising:
- a housing;
- means adapted for receiving a removable cartridge for storing data;
- motor means adapted for engaging a cartridge in order to cause a disk to spin;
- means for movably mounting said motor means to the housing so that the motor means is movable from a first position out of engagement with a cartridge to a second position operably engaged with a cartridge;
- ejecting means for ejecting a removable cartridge from the receiving means, said ejecting means for acting across the direction of insertion of a removable cartridge into the disk drive and for acting along the planar surface of the cartridge housing in order to eject the removable cartridge;
- means for operating both the movably mounting means and the ejecting means;
- said operating means including a single lever for operating both the movably mounting means and the ejecting means.
- 7. The disk drive of claim 6 including:
- said ejecting means for additionally engaging and lockingly holding a removable cartridge in place in the receiving means.
- 8. A disk drive adapted for receiving along a direction of insertion a removable cartridge with a disk for storing data, the cartridge having a cartridge housing for containing the disk, the cartridge housing having a planar surface that is substantially parallel to the disk, said disk drive comprising:
- a housing;
- means adapted for receiving a removable cartridge for storing data;
- motor means adapted for engaging a cartridge in order to cause a disk to spin;
- means for movably mounting said motor means to the housing so that the motor means is movable from a first position out of engagement with a cartridge to a second position operably engaged with a cartridge;
- locking means for engaging and lockingly holding a removable cartridge in place in the receiving means;
- said locking means for acting across the direction of insertion of a removable cartridge into the disk drive and for acting along the planar surface of the cartridge housing in order to engage and lockingly hold a removable cartridge in place in the receiving means;
- means for operating both the movable mounting means and the locking means;
- said operating means including a single lever for operating both the movably mounting means and the locking means.
- 9. The disk drive of claim 8 wherein said locking means is for additionally ejecting a removable cartridge for the disk drive.
- 10. A disk drive adapted for receiving along a direction of insertion a removable cartridge for storing data, the cartridge having a cartridge housing containing a data storing disk, the cartridge housing having a planar surface that is substantially parallel to the disk, said disk drive comprising:
- a housing;
- means adapted for receiving in a receiving plane a removable cartridge; and
- motor means adapted for engaging and causing a disk inside a removable cartridge to spin at an appropriate speed; and
- means for movable mounting the motor means to the housing so that the motor means is movable from a first position out of engagement with a disk to a second position operably engaged with a disk;
- locking means for acting across the direction of insertion of a removable cartridge into the disk drive and for acting along the planar surface of the cartridge housing in order to engage and lockingly hold a removable cartridge in place in the receiving means.
- 11. The disk drive of claim 10 including:
- said locking means adapted for additionally ejecting the cartridge from the receiving means.
- 12. The disk drive of claim 10 including:
- means for operating both the movable mounting means and the locking means.
- 13. The disk drive of claim 12 including:
- said operating means including a single lever for operating both the movable mounting means and the locking means.
- 14. The disk drive of claim 10 wherein the cartridge has a groove defined in the cartridge housing, the disk drive including:
- said locking means including an upstanding pin which can engage the groove of the cartridge housing as the pin acts across the direction of insertion of the removable cartridge into the disk drive and as the pin simultaneously acts along the planar surface of the cartridge housing.
- 15. A disk drive adapted for receiving along a direction of insertion a removable cartridge for storing data the cartridge having a cartridge housing for containing a data storing disk, the cartridge housing having a planar surface that is substantially parallel to the disk, said disk drive comprising:
- a housing;
- a door;
- means for mounting said door to said housing so that said door can be moved to an open position so that a cartridge can be received in said disk drive;
- means adapted for receiving a removable cartridge along the direction of insertion;
- motor means adapted for engaging a removable cartridge in order to cause a disk to spin;
- means for movably mounting the motor means to the housing so that the motor means is movable from a first position out of engagement with a cartridge to a second position operably engaged with a cartridge;
- locking means for acting across the direction of insertion of a removable cartridge into the disk drive for acting along the planar surface of the cartridge housing in order to engage and hold a removable cartridge in place in the receiving means;
- means for operably linking said door with said means for movably mounting said motor means and said locking means so that the movement of said door operates both the movably mounting means and said locking means.
- 16. The disk drive of claim 15 including:
- said locking means adapted for additionally ejecting a cartridge from the receiving means.
- said locking means including an upstanding pin which can engage the groove of the cartridge housing as the pin acts across the direction of insertion of the removable cartridge into the disk drive and as the pin simultaneously acts along the planar surface of the cartridge housing.
- 17. The disk drive of claim 15 wherein the cartridge has a groove defined in the cartridge housing, the disk drive including:
- said locking means including an upstanding pin which can engage the groove of the cartridge housing as the pin acts across the direction of insertion of the removable cartridge into the disk drive and as the pin simultaneously acts along the planar surface of the cartridge housing.
- 18. A disk drive adapted for receiving a removable cartridge along a direction of insertion, the removable cartridge having a cartridge housing and a groove defined in the cartridge housing, the cartridge housing enclosing a rotatable disk assembly which stores data, said disk drive comprising:
- a drive housing;.
- receiving means adapted for receiving the removable cartridge in a receiving plane;
- motor means adapted for engaging and causing the disk assembly inside the removable cartridge to spin at an appropriate speed;
- means for movably mounting said motor means to said drive housing so that said motor means is movable from a first position out of engagement with the disk assembly to a second position operably engaged with the disk assembly; and
- locking means for acting across the direction of insertion of the removable cartridge into said disk drive and for acting perpendicularly to the direction of motion of said motor means from said first position to said second position in order to engage and lock the removable cartridge in place in said receiving means, said locking means including an upstanding pin which can engage the groove of the cartridge housing as said pin acts across the direction of insertion of the removable cartridge into said disk drive and as said pin simultaneously acts perpendicularly to the direction of motion of said motor means from said first position to said second position.
- 19. A disk drive adapted for receiving a removable cartridge along a direction of insertion, the removable cartridge having a cartridge housing and a groove defined in the cartridge housing, the cartridge housing enclosing a disk for storing data, said disk drive comprising:
- a drive housing;
- a door;
- a door mounting means for mounting said door to said drive housing such that said door can be moved to an open position to enable said disk drive to receive the removable cartridge;
- a receiving means adapted for receiving the removable cartridge along the direction of insertion;
- motor means adapted for engaging the removable cartridge in order to cause the disk enclosed by the cartridge housing to spin;
- a motor mounting means for movably mounting said motor means to said drive housing so that said motor means is movable from a first position out of engagement with the cartridge to a second position operably engaged with the cartridge;
- a locking means for acting across the direction of insertion of the removable cartridge into said disk drive and for acting perpendicularly to the direction of motion of said motor means from said first position to said second position in order to engage and hold the removable cartridge in place in said receiving means, said locking means including an upstanding pin which can engage the groove of the cartridge housing as said pin acts across the direction of insertion of the removable cartridge into said disk drive and as said pin simultaneously acts perpendicularly to the direction of motion of said motor means from said first position to said second position; and
- means for operably linking said door with said motor mounting means and said locking means such that the movement of said door operates both said motor mounting means and said locking means.
